The 80s Jaydee basses are famous for having dodgy necks, it was because Mark King of Level 42 fame made them really popular and John Diggins (Jaydee) hired in some not so experienced makers and struggled to keep up with demand. Since the 90s his basses are rock solid and perfectly built. I just got a new series 3 and the craftsmanship is amazing, up their with Alembic in build quality. Thanks for the great video!

I’m so glad you understand and appreciate these bases , especially the Hyak. The numbers of those of us that do are dwindling every day.

Hi Tony! You're 100% right about the Jaydee being Mark King's first bass of note. The story that I've heard is that King was looking for an Alembic. Unable to get an Alembic, he settled for a Jaydee. After one of Level 42's early appearances on 'Top of the Pops' (a long running UK TV chart music show), with that bass Jaydee's phoneline melted with enquirys

I also have a Veillette-Citron from 1981 (first owner). Lately I had turned it into a tenor bass (ADGC) by Gerald Marleaux and strung with a set of his soprano bass strings and it sounds fantastic! I do love passive basses and the V.C. provides all the colours and percussive nuances I need for my work. When played in standard tuning (EADG) and with the back pickup only, this bass can also produce Jaco sounds. Glad Ton Senatore shows his VC here which looks almost identical to mine.

I was wondering if you knew about Lado basses and guitars, made in Canada. I owned 3 of them, still own a 1978 Super Falcon. No direct connection to Alembic, but definitely in the same spirit, beautiful wood and craftmanship as well as on board electronics and brass appointments, great instruments.

Hello Tony, I also own an mid 80's JD, exactly the same model (Mark King Model) as you have. I must adjust the neck about twice every year according to seasons :-) I do play my other basses more but I won't part from the JD since you never can own too many basses! Your Hyak was an interesting one, first time I see this. I have been looking for a Pangborn for years but seem to be almost impossible to find, would consider that another Alembic-inspired bass.

Hi Tony if you ever get the chance to hold and play an Alembic series 2 you will understand why they are flagship of Alembic and why they are so expensive. You will be hooked immediately. No other Alembic comes close to the neck, feel, and sound of a series 2.They really are in a different class.

I bought a Series I in 1976 for $2500 Canadian (everything is more expensive here). Can't play anymore due to a problem with my right hand, so gave it to one of my nephews a couple of years ago. I see that, as of today 2023/09/04) the Series I lists for $33500 US; ridiculous. As much as I loved the bass, the unfortunate thing is that I had to sell my '62 white Jazz bass in order to afford it. Have always regretted that I couldn't figure out a way to have them both at the time.

Just found your channel. I've never even heard of a Hyack (Sp. ?) . It looks like a CT meets Alembic.I had the pleasure of borrowing a JayDee Supernatural for a few months. Have you played a Peavey Cirrus ? It's 35" scale, so you may not like it, but nearly every Alembic owner owns one, too.
