People run to pleasure to escape whatever pain they're experiencing....and the ego loves it. It takes a great deal of convincing that this is so and unless one is so guided in one's mis-adventures to be exposed to places and people where you can get help for your addiction you might as well forget about it. My father knew he was dying from cirrosis due to the drink chose to give in to the disease even though he saw me dealing with mine. He passed on a year and a half later.

I am convinced that you can reach enlightenment through art. Art (music or any of the visual arts) impact our minds and souls so much that it even is on par with meditation, in my experience. Art is not something that should be classified as a sensual pleasure.

Yep, The Middle Way is the answer... no extreme... that's what Buddha stressed to us... only that we still have clouded minds bonded by past negative karmic imprints thus could not see this Truth...

@WhatSayestThou ...as far as I'm concerned. It's a slick way to introduce them to the "pleasures" of alcohol later on because these things are so readily available in any grocery or convience store. This is not just "another can of soda pop", at the risk of sounding preachy.

@WhatSayestThou These days there a few ways and places where you can over indulge like the all you can eat buffet restuarants, I liked the Chinese ones, lol. Also the "red bull" type energy drinks with gurana which has twice the caffine is cause for concern. I tried one and it felt like I'd took a handful of amphetimines (speed). I frequently see children drinking cans of Monster in public and wearing clothes with the "M" symbol on them, when you might as well hand them a can of beer.

Yogic meditation is not limited to samatha meditation. However, that is the one most widely taught. There are other yogic practices that produce the same mental states as Buddhist techniques. Hindu practices (yoga) & philosophy (Upanishad) and Buddhist practices & philosophy differ only in terminology & organization. They both expound the same truths but in different ways. Buddhists are better at teaching in an organized way that appeals to westerners, as the Sangha is central to Buddhism.

Not to abandon your wife and child is the example of a real man: the opposite of the example of 'The Buddha'.

Next time I abandon a wife and child, which will be the first, I'll cast it in that way and see who might esteem me for it. Also sounds potentially useful as a comeback for those facing enforcement action from the Child Support Agency.

Satipatthana Sutta describes meditation practice, not philosophy, right? So, you cannot use that to compare the *philosophy* of Upanishads & Buddhist philosophy. You will need to use some other Sutta. The greatest obstacle to comparing Upanishads & Buddhism is pride - regardless of whether the comparer is Hindu or Buddhist, there is always a great temptation to see one's own side as superior. So there is a great aversion to seeing any similarity with the other "inferior" philosophy.

I don't think the Buddha was perfect before he attained enlightenment. He tried many techniques in his search for enlightenment. He attained enlightenment but it was not without some trial and error. I'm sure he caused his wife and children grief at that time, but that's how the story goes. We must not focus on the fact that he left his wife and children but focus on his contribution to ending suffering.
