Karate's elbows look alot like "dirty" or "street" boxing (interchangeable terms, since there is sport focused and self-defense focused pugilism), where is often pointed out to use elbows against grapplers (because fighting range) if you can't keep "safe" distance. I wonder if thats not what the bunkai was on about at some point... after all, there is alot of grappling in japanese martial arts. It kinda worked when I was the fat kick getting pick on school... The Muay Thai straight elbow is my favorite, particularly from the lead side. It doesn’t feel very powerful to do in the air, but when using it on the bag you can feel how damaging it can really be, plus for self defense if you’ve got your hands up with palms out indicating you don’t want to fight and somebody comes forward at you anyway you can send it right down the center stepping in at the same time so they walk into an elbow to the center of the face. Very devastating.

Love the shoutout for Nathan "Carnage" Corbett! He's my primary Muay Thai instructor and sensei. It's amazing what your progress in Muay Thai has been like as well, Seth. Regarding the "straight elbow," I really like how you guys dissected it as being a different technique than the commonly-taught "uppercut elbow." It's not the same technique, once again. Personally, when I teach and coach, I call this elbow strike the "battering ram." That's what it feels like upon connection, and it's supposed to ram directly THROUGH the target. I think of it more like a blunt-force trauma inducing strike, rather than a "cutting" or "stabbing" strike. All the best 🙏

Great video Seth! I’d love to see you do a collaboration with Iain Abernathy and/or Applied Shotokan some time. This is an older video so I don’t know if you’ll see this but that back elbow from karate isn’t silly at all. You would be AMAZED how often I hit that in mma practice. The great advantag of Muay Thai is that it actually practices elbows on opponents, if in tournament. No karate style practices elbows in any mortal kombat as far as we kommentators are concerned. Not even Kyokushinkai or Enshin. But the Karate elbows can still be dangerous if they actually hit.

Nice video - I love the elbow , such a powerful technique. Is it worth sharing that it can likely blast through an opponent’s defense if delivered powerfully? Also, when launching a power elbow, pretty much anywhere on the body, neck or face will do… presenting a very large and effective target. Sidesteps the risk of broken knuckles and wrists if a punch misses its target slightly.
@polerin3 жыл бұрын
Sort of a weird cross disciplinary thing. I conceptualize flat track derby as a multi-person martial art where you can't kick or use your hands on an opponent. Sounds weird I know, but there's a shoulder clubbing motion in derby I actually teach by showing people elbow strikes. The whipping motion through the core that Josh demonstrates with the core is the basic component of that strike. Interesting enough. The really interesting thing, though, is that just because we don't use hands on opponents, it doesn't mean we can't grapple. I can use pressure from all parts of my shoulder complex to affect a large range of an opponent skater's body to stop, redirect, trap, and fight for position. I'd be interested in seeing how you might be able to extend/explain that concept with elbow (non-hand) grappling.

Gekisai elbow is not a follow up to a knee kick. The reason you stomp after the kick in the kata is you are defending against somehow who caught your kick. So you stomp down hard to release your foot. This naturally draws the person who was holding your foot to bow downwards. That is when the upward elbow smashes to person in the nose/face.
