Hi guys! Something different for once! This is a video essay that I made for one of my classes for Miami University's Project Dragonfly, in the class Biology in the Age of Technology. It's partially a proof of concept to see if using popular media to help educate the general public on biological concepts :)
If you liked this video, go check out the other ones, and leave a comment/like! I'd also really appreciate it if you shared this with your friends. It's for research!

"I don't break any rule of illegal farming. I'm just tending (magical) soils" -- Senshi "Nah, you just make a good use of the loopholes" -- Chilchuck

The funniest part is that in the Japanese manga Senshi literally defends himself by saying "I know the loopholes" word for word. Doesn’t even try to hide the fact that what he is doing is technically illegal and that he is just getting away with it via a flaw in how the law is written.

One of the things I love about Dungeon Meshi, as a lifelong fantasy fan, is how much care and thought has gone into the little details. Magic can raise the dead, but it has limits, and it needs biomass. Monsters are magical creatures, but they are real physical living things and they work by consistent rules. It's a brilliant work, filled with such great characters. There's always something special about hearing someone with specialist knowledge enthuse about a work I already like, and bringing new information and new angles of appreciation.

Senshi is my favorite character, with my own garden and cooking knowledge I love seeing how the show depicts Senshi’s knowledge and skill at cooking and living with the dungeon and not just in it.

Ah I love biological analysis here. Good to see another environmentalist to geek out over this amazing show. Huge fan of getting nutrients renewed in soil and sustainable farming works! Would’ve loved if senshi added worms to the crops to help with nutrient uptake!

Dungeon meshi and by extension; Ryo- is so thoughtful and has so much depth for what is seemingly a comedy anime

One thing I particularly like about his practices is how he regards the Golems as a sort of necessary evil They attack people on sight, but they also help to keep potentially more dangerous monsters at bay, and if the golems were destroyed then there'd be nothing to stop all kinds of dangerous creatures from invading the surface, or at least make the once relatively safe levels even more dangerous to travelers, which makes the golems function similarly to a keystone species, being vital for maintaining a healthy, balanced ecosystem

Oh? A hidden gem of a video! This anime has truly been an utter delight for us nerds! I adore the biology of the creatures found in the dungeons, since I've anyways been fascinated by fauna, so it makes me happy to see someone else share the adoration for both this show's attention and respect to ecology!! And uhh... to be honest, the monster meals look amazing too! I wanna find recipes that get as close to the food shown in-show as possible, it just looks too delicious!

This was my favorite bit when first reading the manga. Such an incredibly creative idea for getting vegetables. I really have to wonder where they get sunlight from though.

This is a lovely video essay! The fact that so many people get so many different things out of this series is wonderful. It is truly a testament to the love and care Ryoko Kui put in her manga.

This exactly!! I love how trophic scaling and only taking what's needed is constantly brought up. It's a small piece in the big puzzle that is Dungeon Meshi and it goes a long way in making the fictional world feel alive and interesting :)

I don't find that many real experts such as real biologists or agricultural expertsnon KZbin. It's great to find this video. Please make more farming or gardening-related videos in the future. Probably about some of these topics: Safe pest-control techniques, especially fire ant population control Whether it is a good idea to keep chickens at your backyard Why is it generally safer to use herbivore's waste for fertilizer than to use carnivore's

i like to imagine if you were to describe senshi in DnD terms that he would be a ranger with dungeons as his prefered terrain, he doesnt use magic so he wouldnt really be a druid but he still hasa strong respect and care for the natural environment so i think ranger would describe him best even if he fights with melee weapons

I really like Dungeon Meshi, but the last 2 episodes (18 and 19) have kind of been all filler no killer in my opinion. The ecology stuff kind of peaked in the living armour episode, but there wasn't any of that anyway and the plot isn't moving either, it's just half an episode long short stories

Understandable feeling. As a manga reader I can assure you that there is at least 1 interesting biology episode coming up. Plot wise, progress IS going to slow, but it will happen. Let the show cook!

I think it's suppose to be a reference, to how Senshi dislikes magic and thinks of it as a shortcut (specifically human/elf magic). It was shown in one of the episodes, when Marcile tries to start a fire using magic, but Senshi insists on using old-fashioned flint and steel, saying it's a skill he needs to have. While a direct comparison does not make sense, thinking of pesticides and magic as ALTERNATIVES to something, makes it have more sense. (Also, Chilly Avian makes a good point - Marcile is not always careful with her powers. She almost blew up things they were meant to eat, drained almost her whole mana and even poured down that darn pot of boiling water into the lake).
