Latent and sensible heat are types of energy released or absorbed in the atmosphere. Latent heat is related to changes in phase between liquids, gases, and solids. Sensible heat is related to changes in temperature of a gas or object with no change in phase.
What is an example of sensible heat?
Sensible heat is literally the heat that can be felt. It is the energy moving from one system to another that changes the temperature rather than changing its phase. For example, it warms water rather than melting ice. ... Adding heat to water can either raise the temperature or change the phase.
What do you get when you mix sensible and latent heat?
Enthalpy is the sum of the sensible and latent heat in a given air-vapor mix. It is sometimes referred to as the total heat of the air. The units for sensible heat, latent heat, and enthalpy are the same: BTU/lb of dry air
What is the difference between sensible and latent cooling?
The sensible cooling load refers to the dry bulb temperature of the building and the latent cooling load refers to the wet bulb temperature of the building. For summer conditions the humidity influence on the selection of the HVAC equipment and the latent load as well as the sensible load must be calculated.
What is the role of latent heat?
Latent heat plays a very important role in thunderstorms and hurricanes. Clouds form when warm air rises and the water vapor it contains condenses onto particles called cloud condensation nuclei. ... When the water vapor condenses to form clouds, it releases latent heat into the atmosphere.
Can we feel latent heat?
However, although you cannot feel it, the liquid has stored all that latent heat. ... Only then will all the water freeze and you can begin to remove more sensible heat and lower the temperature of the system below 0oC. Heat energy is conserved no matter how the phase change occurs
Why is latent heat hidden?
