Nice point about helping the community not to mention that a lot of useful stuff gets re used and doesn't end up as landfill or worse. When my mother passed a while back we had to get rid of a houseful of stuff, all good quality and looked after. Had a heap of people tell me that we would have to chuck it out but went to a very large, well by our standards, thrift/op shop and a lovely lady said that they would take the whole lot of it. Nice to know that the stuff will be used again and probably by people who need to save some coin. Reality is, imo, that our wasteful self absorbed lifestyles are going to kill us well before any of the proposed scenarios you commonly see being chucked around. Wifey spends plenty of time in second hand shops and I will check them out for camping items, cooking implements or tools etc. We don't need to as we can well afford whatever we want to buy but it is nice to not always crave the most expensive crap and help others at the same time. Liked this video, thank you.

So great to hear from someone who feels the same way I do. I donate to the Salvation Army (not Goodwill as they are for profit). I have seen firsthand when for example, someone's home burns down, the Salvation Army gives them a voucher to get what they need in the store or if they just have no money, they will cut breaks to them. To me, that is what we are here for, to help each other out. I was executrix of Mom's estate and donated a lot to them then and since then too.

Dear SensiblePrepper and friends, I too recommend Thrift stores, dollar stores, and Harbor Freight for cheap supplies. I am living below the poverty level. I also get supplies from my local food pantry ( canned and dry goods), and my church has a donations day where people donate clothing. In terms of bugging in, I wanted to construct something to guard my doors. It occurred to me I can use old long sleeve shirts to stuff with sand to make sand bags! These will stop a regular powered projectile, and smoke bombs. I repurpose every plastic bottle and milk cartons into a water supply. At some point, you are going to need to invest in hermetically sealed seeds, beehives for honey and wax, goats for milk, hops for beer. You can also use candles to make a Cornish heater inside something fire resistant and radiant. I am investing in a small solar panel set up for radio, and elec devices. Remember, the www. maybe pressed into service by the military under SHTF circumstances, and you cannot rely upon it. ~ Happy Prepping!

Long tapered candles can be killers. When I was a kid the power was out and we lit a tapered candle in the holder on top of the tv set. We were all asleep and the candle fell over onto the tv (they were a foot deep then) and the tv smoldered and all sorts of melted plastic was floating in the air.By shear luck my mother woke up and saved us from a near disaster. Cut the tapered candles sown and use an appropriate holder so it can't fall over and start a fire.

I was working for a week in a city that had an Air Force base nearby, and something I noticed is that all the thrift stores there had a large stock of used military camo clothing. Also, you'd think that thrift stores would be a good place to find mason jars, but almost always it seems that the plain glass jars cost more per unit than you could buy new in a 2-pack (which have bands and lids included). They must be catering to the mason jar collector market.

My Recommedations: 1. Avoid non-stainless Pots & pans: Enameled & teflon coated pots can leach toxic chemicals into your food. A lot of stuff originates from China (or the coatings\enamels do). 2. Avoid cast iron pots unless they are pre-1990s. A lot of steel is recycled and can be contaiminated with heavy metals that can leach into your food. Stainless is inert and will not leach metals out even if the food is acidic. 3. Avoid Aluminum pots & Pans because Alumium is slightly toxic and acidic foods can absorb aluminium. Its not as bad as heavy metals, but I would recommend avoiding using them. OK if you using it for accassional meals as the alum. does leave your body over time and small amounts its fine. Also OK for canning as the food is glass jars and not in direct contact with Alum. 4.Avoid using open candles since they are so easy to knock over and start a fire. Get some type of enclosure that will protect you from a fire if it gets knocked over.

@@PaEMT_FF9 Good to know about Ebay usually having parts. I have to find the dial thing, and I ordered one from the manufacturor using the model name and number . They sent me the wrong one so I cant use it. Now they have, they wont let me return it even tho there return policy says you have 30 days to return for full return, I have only had the part for a total of 9 days...

That big lantern can be easily modified to take the six volt rechargeable Lithium Batteries. I WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO TEACH FOLKS HOW TO DO IT!

Just FYI goodwill is a great charity. They help disabled people get jobs and become more self sufficient and less reliant on the government. They helped me get a work history and get off of welfare.

Bill Brasky even *if* what you’re saying is true, this person has benefited from that system. That should not be brushed off because of your ignorance.

OrangeManBad.MP4 How is that ignorant? A broken clock is right twice a day. I want greedy people to be shown in the light. Are you against that?

I find awesome stuff when I go to thrift stores. Some other things that I've found that you didn't mention are Backpacking bags, Daypacks, pouches, fishing gear and tackle, books, tents, camp chairs, containers to make kits inside of, rain suits or ponchos, road side/car emergency equipment, and etc. I really enjoy going to thrift stores because you never know what you'll find. Few things to remember to make a list of things you want, so you don't go buying random things you don't need. Also, look prices up on certain items. Places like Goodwill can overcharge on 2nd hand items more than what they are when you buy them new or they be around the same price. There can be a number of reasons why, but mainly it could be because they don't know what they have. That could either be a good thing or a bad thing. I've seen a Wal-Mart $1 flashlight for $3, but I found a $400 camera with accessories for $25. Being knowledgeable of and sourcing your items can help determine what to get. Finally, look into finding out if they have coupons and the 50% off specified color items.

I have seen Goodwill mark Dollar Tree items (the ones that cost $1) for more than a dollar.

im good with everything but those acu shirts, they are ok for some things but are wayyyyy to thin and weak for real heavy duty work which is why the govt ended use after 4 years better to get the old woodland camo bdu's those will stand tons of crap. jmtc.

I don't like the camo pattern, so I avoid ACU. Might also have to do with it being an Army thing, and me being a former Marine.

you really want lace up shoes in a bug out situation ...try running climbing or walking in mud in slip ons and it's not going to end well
@middknightdream15773 жыл бұрын
Also replace all your laces with 550 paracord. You can strip the inner strands out and then put the outter layer back on the shoes so you still have your laces.
