I volunteered with my parish SVdP conference for a few years and learned these not well known facts about St Vincent de Paul. He was so ashamed of being poor that when his father brought money to him at his school he would not allow his father into the building. He entered the priesthood because at that time in France some priests were very well paid by wealthy benefactors and he decided that was for him. But he sure turned out to be a grand saint in the end. I encourage people to learn more about Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. He had a heart for the suffering poor like no one else's.
