I do not want to give up my age but back in the 80's no one trusted the filters of the day and always used iodide tablets. They tasted like crap but mixed with instant tea they got you thru the day. Never got any water born illnesses. Love your content. Thanks for doing what you do.

I can see myself liking the convince of finding some nice clear water, dropping the tablets in and keep on hiking. I’m definitely keeping them in my pack on future trips. Thanks for watching that means a lot to me!

Thanks for the video. Nice job on it. Brings back memories of my first trip to the Black Forest Trail many years ago. Still my favorite trail.

I love the idea of a wintertime overnight. Thanks for taking us along! I like using iodine sometimes too. Vitamin C tablets take the brown color and iodine taste away. If you boil it for dinner or coffee etc… it turns blue! Weird…lol I guess it has something to do with the titanium pot but I’m not sure. I enjoyed watching! 👍

Thanks 5H! I plan on experimenting more with these tablets. I see them being convenient at times during the summer as well and I’m going to try the chlorine dioxide drops one of these times soon.

Another great video! I've watched all that you've posted on KZbin so far and thoroughly enjoyed every one. I particularly appreciate the map cutaways so we know exactly where you are. I hiked Sentiero DiShay a few years back in conjunction with the STS/BFT North and South Connectors. A great loop. I'm planning on heading up to the PA Wilds this weekend for a four day, three night trip but haven't decided where yet. I was originally thinking Clear Creek State Forest but you may have just convinced me to head to Northern Tiadaghton SF/Southern Tioga SF. I've been to Tiadaghton a few times in 2023 but it's so beautiful up there. Winter camping is an art. It takes a lot of trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn't and it's all quite individual. You've got to be comfortable being uncomfortable. For future reference (glad you didn't get sick!), as you mentioned Potable Aqua is an iodine based tablet, hence the water turning yellow. Per the CDC "Disinfection with iodine or chlorine is not effective in killing Cryptosporidium; Disinfection with iodine or chlorine has a low to moderate effectiveness in killing Giardia;" I use Aquamira (Chlorine dioxide) drops in winter. Drops are a bit more of a hassle (they haven't frozen on me even down to 0F) but I prefer to avoid bringing anything home with me. Looking forward to the new adventures! www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking/travel/backcountry_water_treatment.html

Thank you for the in depth comment and information! I’m going to look into those drops then for next time. I want to get a few more winter trips in this year. And thanks for watching! Have a great trip this weekend!

Great video Jeremy. Winter backpacking trips are some of my favorite trips. We get to play with our winter gear aka toys and as long as we bring the right stuff it's comfortable. There is no cold weather, just bad gear choices. Instead of those tabs grab yourself a steripen, one of the rechargable ones, it's my go to filter system in the winter.

Really enjoyed watching this hike! What is the brand of the saw you are using ? The one we have is not so great. I can’t wait to get out backpacking again. Thanks for the great videos!!!
@Hiking.Inspired9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the support. I really appreciate the comments from people who keep up with my channel! The saw I use I bought at Lowes. The brand name is Corona. $20 -$25. There’s definitely lighter saws you can find about the same size. I know the Silky brand is popular but they do cost a bit more. I have no complaints about mine other than it would be nice to shave a few ounces off it but there’s other things I’d probably upgrade before worrying about that.

13:07 Yes, I'm sure we will, bud. 37:26 Nicely done! Great video. Nice to be able to linger with you at camp and vicariously experience what you're doing. That light snowfall made everything so beautiful. 46:46 Nice Breaking Bad style shot, haha. Why did that stuff turn purple? I know why. Chemistry! You're welcome, happy to help. Did you wear a base layer out there?
@Hiking.Inspired9 ай бұрын
Thanks John! Yes! BB style shots are fun! I have a few more ideas (inspired) to throw in for future videos. It’s was cold though.. I’m hoping for more in the upper 30’s for the next one haha! I had a base layer on the whole time. Walmarts best.

Great work Jeremy! Your vids are really enjoyable-I think I say that every time! Far-from-being-a-pro tip: put a square of foil under your alcohol stove. You’ll use less fuel and you’ll boil water faster. When will we see you on the Terrace Mountain Trail??
@Hiking.Inspired9 ай бұрын
I looked that trail up last time you mentioned it. It looks like something I would like to do. Perhaps this year? I’m going to use foil next time then! Thanks for the tip!

Quite a trip. It's a colder cold, isn't it? You do enjoy being out. I can tell you are prepared. Thanks. Did I ask you if you sharpen that saw? Whats the name? I have two, both got dull quick.
@Hiking.InspiredАй бұрын
@@quietjohnoutandabout6578 I’ve never sharpened that saw and to be honest if I ever went to sharpen it I would have to look up a tutorial on how to. It’s from the lawn care department at Lowes. I hope to get a much lighter Silky brand saw in the future!

Thanks for the video. What Osprey model are you using and how long have you had it? What are its pros and cons, if you were to use it in Spring or Fall for 2-3 day trips of 15-20 miles per day? Thanks JT
@Hiking.Inspired9 ай бұрын
It’s the Atmos Light 65 liter. I bought it this past summer. Pros: easy to get to my water bottles while the pack is on. It has 2 pouches on the hip belt. Built in rain cover. Seems pretty durable. I feel like it’s more comfortable holding more weight than my much lighter pack(zpacks arc haul). The hip belts are luxurious. The “brain” is detachable allowing you to slim down the pack. It has a side entry zipper. Cons: it’s on the heavier side. The cost of the pack is comparable to much lighter packs you can find out there. When I used it during the summer I thought the shoulder straps were a little narrow around my bare neck. They rubbed it now again and was a bit annoying. Maybe some slight adjustments would fix that. I’ve been calling this pack my luxury sedan model. It’ll preform just fine 20 miles a day with 20-30lbs. I would even recommend it. I’ve been pushing 40lbs on my last couple uses with it.
