Well, that paperwork has been obtained by a news outlet in Minnesota. The National Guard has confirmed, reluctantly. I gather, that he only held the CSM title for a few months, that it was a conditional promotion and that he was demoted at his retirement to his former rank because he never completed the required training to hold the CSM rank. As to whether he knew before his retirement that his battalion was to be deployed I think that is self evident. Deployment orders do not drop and you’re gone the next day. As part of the upper level command for his battalion he would have known months in advance. No member of the military would dispute those facts. Had Walz just stood on his true record he would have been entitled to all the respect such service deserves. He didn’t. There is no dispute that, by regulation, he was permitted to retire when he did. He had his twenty and even though he had re-upped in 2001 for a further six years he could retire when he chose. He attempted to claim it was only four years that he signed for and now the spokespeople for the campaign are implying that he retired before the orders were received for deployment. The men under his command consider his actions indefensible and when he tries to twist the truth he indicates that he knows his actions were not precisely something of which he was proud. No one needs his service record to know that his battalion had not previously been deployed to a combat zone. He was sitting in Italy in support of those who were. Before his records were obtained by that news outlet and before he got chosen as VP for Harris no one in Minnesota media was interested in the story or at least Walz was pretty successful at keeping it as low profile as possible. The glare of a National campaign spotlight has changed all that, he’s going to have to explain himself at some point, the story isn’t going to go away.

I have many friends with military backgrounds, some have seen combat, some have not, but no one of them would claim to have done so when they had not. It dishonours your service on its face and it’s an insult to those who have gone into combat zones. Members of his former command have said that it doesn’t matter that he COULD do it, he should not have deserted his men who he had trained when he found out he was to be deployed. Do your duty and retire afterward. Walz, himself, said as much in his own campaign messages before he abruptly retired. I don’t know how retirements are handled in the National Guard in Minnesota but he seems to have had some suspicion that it wouldn’t be well received. He’s reported to have struck his tent, gathered his belongings and disappeared with his boys left wondering what in blazes was going on. Would not it be more usual for someone with his length of service and rank to have farewelled his men better than this? From my own personal point of view, I’m not so sure I could have caused another serviceman, one who was not set to deploy, to have to go in my place.
