Even considering time constraints, the Sentry Gun scenes add so little time but are simply an incredible addition to the film. It adds so much tension, showing how relentless the Aliens are, how cunning they are to retreat and look for a new avenue, it showcases some of the really cool firepower Hudson was bragging about, etc. It also wipes out dozens of Aliens, helping to explain why we see so relatively few later on. This short set of scenes adds so much richness to the film that the film really suffers without it. It explains why the Aliens chose to move thru the ceilings. And otherwise how would Ripley just waltz in to the queen's den? It makes more sense knowing 100 Aliens were mowed down by the Sentry guns.

I saw this movie on VHS rental when I was 11. The sentry/motion gun scene was the icing on the cake for absolute suspense! I had trouble sleeping at night for a month! LOL! Years later watching the movie I thought I'd gone nuts. No motion gun scene in any of the rentals. I thought maybe I had imagined the scene. Then, finally I saw some deleted scenes and there it was! Why would they leave this gem of a scene out of the movie!

The first time I had seen Aliens was when it had it's TV network premiere in the late 80s when I was in middle school. I was still in elementary school in 1986 and my parents wouldn't let me watch an R rated movie. The sentry gun scene was always there in the TV edit, I guess they added it to make the run time longer for commercials. So I was shocked when I rented it later and the theatrical cut didn't have it. For a while I thought I had imagined the scene but was happy to see it later in VHS director's cuts and then the DVD/Blu-Rays.

He had enough information to infer the rest of the colonists were dead and that the trackers inferred a nest of some kind; he could have figured out the infiltration points and locked down the colony (and at the very very least secured the dropship's standby point with sentry guns) Remember, the basic weapon of the CM, the pulse rifle, destroys aliens with ease. One thing you have to say about the Xenos, it's impressive how much ammo is costs to hold the horde back when they are on the offensive advance. If they have numbers, you just burn through ammo at a full rate until they retreat, which takes a lot for them to do so, or they get to you. Hate them or not, you will respect them. If you go back to the start of the film in the court martial scene, they say there are 60 0r 70 families on the planet now. Given that the average family consists of 4 or 5 members at most, then that means there would be a maximum of about 350 hosts for the Aliens to impregnate, the marines must have wiped out 2 or 3 times that many. Just a thought...

There's a version out there where the Xenomorphs yell 'LEROY JENKINS!' when they try and rush those tunnels. Joking aside the theatrical cut is by far the best cut. Stripped back, tense. The extra scenes don't add that much imo.

Love that scene.question? If the colony only had a 158 people meaning close to 150 Xenos counting a few humans killed fighting back why does the first set of guns run out? Surely every alien hit by theses powerful rounds were obliterated, how could they keep attacking with their friends being complete FUBAR, just asking .

@@minicle426 people made a good point above, with this scene kinaa cut short in the theatrical performance, it does make it seem like that. But in all honestly with the scene showing a good portion (not all) but a good portion of aliens getting iced, it helps explain the mostly empty hive. It's a fair point; they actually put thoguht into this movie maybe not so much say like Prometheus and whatnot.

This concept is so good… it’s a wonder every movie didn’t start using sentry guns. Like, why in “Matrix Revolutions” did they have to put on those big dumb suits when they could have wired up a thousand motion-sensing sentry guns? Stole the wrong idea from this movie lol.

This scene makes the ending more believable. With 158 colonist, slash / Aliens once taken, those Sentry guns brought the numbers down to a more realistic number. What Ripley did was still awesome though. To do that, knowing and witnessing what they could do to you (From Dallas being morphed to that poor woman), that was an act of extreme valor.

They should have lowered the Rate of Fire on those guns. One round could go through several Xenos. Only armored targets needed such a high RoF. Going bang-bang-bang like a Bofors gun would have been enough to defend those tunnels with much ammo left over after the first wave.
