I have heard Kissin do this piece at a much later age, but it cannot compare with the orchestral textures this teenager could draw from the piano! Even though this performance will mature with age, it is still one of Seong-jin's finest accomplishments! How wonderful to find a great pianist who is not dominated by the Russian school.

This is surely good, but it belongs not to the best recordings .Listen to Yuliana Avdeeva. This is another level of musical complexity. In my ears the very best of all. But this is my opinion.

I love how he expresses the music through his body language and expressions. Like how he jerks his body on more broader notes while on the more slower peaceful songs he delays his hand and holds it in the air gracefully. Little things like that can add a lot to a performance

Probably among the best Pictures renditions ever. The piano was also in a good shape for it, not too bright like Steinways tend to be. Still wish he would have chosen the Shigure Kawai instead.

I came to this video after listening to Kissin's performance. Cho's sound feels soft and sensitive, but not weak at all. And Kissin's sound feels sharp and passionate, but not stiff at all. I love both performances. I can't choose one.

Personally I think I prefer Kissin's interpretation, though it comes in close. I think it is worth noting that Seong-jin Cho seems to have played in a more impressionistic, Ravelian way whereas Kissin seems to be truer to Mussorgsky's original writing. Howbeit, I am most partial to Pletnev's studio recording which I think is a firery and full of growl, but thoughtful and extremely coordinated rendition. The way he adapts The Great Gate of Kiev to make it sound more like bells is astounding!

He gets it, the whole package. He understands the orchestral voicing, the time stretching, the dynamics and the meaning of the work. It's as if Ravel himself were coaching him. Just incredible from a 17 y/o. One can find technical faults here and there, but this is a masterful performance. I've listened to so many pianists try to do this piece - this is one the best I've ever heard.

No, there is no orchestral voicing. Ravel ruined the piece with his orchestration. The timbre of an orchestra is not needed.

Amazing performance and only 17!! Can't decide which I like better, this or Kissin. Both are incredible but I like Cho's expressive nature and delicate phrasing throughout although that might be due to the better recording equipment comparative to Kissin.
