Outstanding!! Surely Schumann was at his poetic and creative best when he composed the pieces in Op.12. And we hear Cho at his poetic and recreative best with this spectacular performance. In his hands each section comes alive in a totally convincing manner, with its own unique sound and character. No wonder I find myself listening again and again, always with the utmost admiration for the composer and the artist. Bravo!

As a huge fan of Rachmaninov, Chopin, Prokofiev and Debussy, the genius of Schumann is undeniable. Very dense in every measure, using and discovering voicings and transitions years ahead of his time, while still offering delightful (Mozart-like?) melodies. I love this Opus way too much, every piece is so unique.

However, I also agree with those who say that Seong-Jin Cho has something " the others don't quite have". When he plays I hear 'certain something' I have never experienced before, placing him, for me, as the finest pianist ever. I have tried to analyze just what it is...the sensitivity, depth, sincerity, sound, nuance, phrasing...or a magic combination of all that and more? Remember, we each perceive the arts in a different way, depending on our background and expectations. I am so grateful to be able to hear Cho each day for he has brought fresh beauty and joy into my life with his very special talent!

I agree with everyone, a wonderful performance. Maybe the tender introductory phrase to Fabel should not be taken quite so slowly. Clara Schumann didn't like such slowing down in these cycles but Cho plays it so beautifully that I don't mind. One not very musically experienced friend found him too fierce. Here again I think of Clara. when Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn heard her play they wrote, " Clara Sch swept us off our feet again with fire of her playing." Cho has the fire. When Goethe heard her play when she was about 14, he said, "This girl has the strength of six boys."

Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke, Op. 12, is a set of eight pieces for piano, written in 1837. The title was inspired by the 1814-15 collection of novellas, essays, treatises, letters, and writings about music, Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier (which also included the complete Kreisleriana, another source of inspiration for Schumann) by one of his favourite authors, E. T. A. Hoffmann. Schumann dedicated the pieces to Fräulein Anna Robena Laidlaw, an accomplished and attractive 18-year-old Scottish pianist with whom Schumann had become good friends.[1] Schumann composed the pieces with the characters Florestan and Eusebius in mind, representing the duality of his personality. Eusebius depicts the dreamer in Schumann while Florestan represents his passionate side. These two characters parlay with one another throughout the collection, ending self-reflectively with Eusebius in "Ende vom Lied".
