I think Grunt's "generic" quality is actually his appeal. It was nice to be given just a basic soldier along with all the more specialized Joes. And he was definitely the face of GI Joe for a few years. Just about every licensed product, it was his card art. He was even the Marvel Comics corner box guy. Edit: and my first non-toy piece of GI Joe swag was...Underoos. With Grunt on the shirt.

He was also the closest thing to the original GI Joe Action Soldier (the most recognizable GI Joe item before the ARAH stuff caught on)

I was in at the start, pre swivel arm. Loved this original lineup. Snake Eyes,Stalker, Scarlett,Rock n Roll,Cobra... just great

Correction for Dave. Stalker was not a Green Beret. He was a Ranger! They gave him a green beret because the Rangers didn't go with the black yet until the Green Berets complained about them using the green.

And as of 2001 the Rangers went with Tan berets due to Army making Black standard dress beret for most of the troops.

I hated that the hooded and helmeted Cobra Commander were different colors. I liked to pull a switcheroo sometimes when playing. Imagining him changing headgear quickly was okay. But the whole outfit? 😅 These days a Cobra Commander figure could have switchable heads. But I think we all know Hasbro better than that.

The second version of Snake Eyes was much better. It's one of the few examples of a second version of a character being obviously better than the first.
