I was born in '77. Star Wars toys were my first action figures. When GI Joes dropped they were instantly cooler as they bent at the knee and elbow. Not to mention all the accessories and vehicles added later. The 80s were a fantastic era to be a child 😎👍

Same here! Born in 77, Star Wars was my first true figure obsession then when G.I. Joe came along, well it became my biggest obsession. I kick myself everyday knowing I had nearly every Star Wars figure and had a ton of G.I. Joe figures and either gave them away, sold them or destroyed them

Loved your video, but one correction. Spirit was the second Native American character to be introduced into the line. The first was Airborne, released the year before. He apperared in the comics 20 issues before Spirit (issues #11 and #31), though Spirit appeared in the cartoon long before Airborne I think.

Star Wars action figures were expensive - more than $3 in 1982! G.I.Joe figures were more articulate and cost less. Later on, the figures improved, with the ability to nod the head. If you lost your Star Wars figure’s gun, you were screwed. No way to replace it. But G.I.Joe provided accessory replacement packs! G.I.Joe figures were superior in every way.

I always liked the guys with plenty of accessories so Hit and Run and Barbecue were right up my alley. Also liked Blowtorch and Lifeline and Fast Draw. I never cared for the comics and much preferred the cartoon with Duke and Flint being the lead characters; also never liked Snake Eyes other than for having an Uzi. The whole "ninja" thing was a hard pass for me; I liked my Joes and Cobras having military battles, no ninja stuff. And of course, of those three main properties at the start of the video, Transformers was my main choice and still is today :) But i always have a special spot for Joe, too.

Great video, and great list Tony. This is your list so it makes no never mind if I agree or not! GI Joe and Action Force were so fantastic, in general, as a kids toyline (the whole IP was great), that these toys, and others like them, impacted our lives so much, we still love them as adults. No other generation truly understands the love for toys we have as a result of IP driven toy lines. I still remember the excitement of seeing pegs filled with series one and the vehicles. And this excitement is still felt, through your, and others', channels. Thank you sir, for what you do! Yo Joe!

Thanks for THIS one, Mr. Tony! I've been expecting this list since your Top 10 Cobra Action Figures video. Had most of the figures on this list. Agree with you about Beach-Head being the best 1986 Joe figure. I originally thought that Hit 'n Run was a repeat of Grunt & Footloose, but reading Tom Clancy's Clear and Present Danger and its description of the role of the Light Infantryman changed my mind. In the comics, Stalker was General Hawk's right hand man & the de facto Executive Officer of G. I. Joe (ironically, Larry Hama never created an actual Second in Command for the team; in an interview in Marvel Age Magazine #20, he noted that, by rights, Duke (as Acting First Sergeant) comes below the Commanding Officer (Hawk) & the Executive Officer (?). If the Stalker action figure had a shortcoming, I think its because it didn't come with the G. I. JUMP Jetpack, which he exclusively used in the comics in the early issues. Scarlett is easily my absolute favorite of the female Joes. A beauty who had the intelligence & skills equal to her looks ❤️😇. And I also appreciated her relationship with Snake-Eyes. Its a shame the cartoon dumbed down/simplified matters by pairing her with the likes of Duke. Wish Snake-Eyes' 1989 version headed the list; that outfit (which debuted in G. I. Joe #95, part 2 of the Snake-Eyes Trilogy) was a real standout and made him resemble Spider-Man in his black costume; plus, it had multiple accessories and one of the best written G. I. Joe filecards IMHO. Duke was never the 'leader' of G. I. Joe- something Larry Hama always clarified in the comics' letter pages (e.g.: G. I. Joe #84 or 85). You cited the Joe cartoon and while it had great animation & character design, the premise & episodes should've been more serious. The cartoon should've been more like an anime like Robotech or Thunderbirds 2086. That would've made it easier to adapt G. I. Joe #21's Silent Interlude. (the cover of which was paid homage to in Marvel's Deadpool #21! No joke!) For me the Worst Joe figure was Quick Kick. Its simply next to impossible to like the figure , and the cartoon made matters far worse by making him like a comedic Jackie Chan. Other figures who I think should've made the list: 1984 Torpedo (S. E. A. L. - SEa Air Land) 1987 Jinx (Ninja/Intelligence) 1986 Claymore G. I. Joe Covert Operations), packed in the G. I. Joe Special Missions: Brazil boxed set) 1991 General Hawk (G. I. Joe Commander) 1991 Heavy Duty (Heavy Ordnance Trooper), and 1989 Rock 'n Roll (Gatling Machine Gunner) Can't wait for your next video, Mr. Tony. 👍

My favorite Joe figure was the version 2 Daina. Personally, prefer the comics (most consistently, the Blaylock era) and GI Joe: Renegades over the Sunbow show, the DIC show, and the live action movies. Much more character driven stories, and under the leadership of Blaylock, GI Joe had this modern warfare high stakes attitude. He even aged up the original characters (to what Vietnam vets for example, would have been like in 2000), that way making the book just as inclusive to older characters as it was to new ones.Baroness goes "full term" into what becomes the classic "Sins of the Mother" storyline. A famous GI Joe leader from the original roster gets paralyzed, and as he tries to still contribute, a general from even earlier in the franchise joins on in a leadership capacity. They even killed off a fan favorite (in a gruesome murder scene), and their spouse (someone in your list) is left dealing with the emotional damage for the rest of the series. IDW released great trade paperbacks of the Blaylock era but also turned it into an encapsulated hypothetical timeline that's no longer canon.

Having grown up in the 1960's and 1970s I was deeply disappointed to find the brand of GI Joe reduced to the tiny format. The attention to detail in the original series was awesome and created a new level of excitement and the creation of the new category of action figures. The new figures remind of my old armymen. I own between 150 and 200 of the original series figures and never even purchased one of the tiny GI Joe figures!
@finalsecretofchrono13392 жыл бұрын
The 1/18 scale allowed for a lot of vehicles to be introduced which were the stars of the 1980s toy-line. It became less about the different uniforms, and more about helicopters, jets, tanks that the Joes could sit in, etc.
@O.G.Trashboat Жыл бұрын
The brand was never reduced. The 3 3/4 inch line was called G.I. Joe a Real American hero. It is a completely different line. The 12-inch version is a completely different line. Both existed at the same time. You statement is completely false. They still make the 12 version to this day.

There are a lot of great figures in my opinion that I would have substituted for picks like spirit and barbecue, Shockwave being one of them. Great list! I always exclude Snake Eyes from my favorites list, only because he'll always top it, for me it's version one thought, not because it's the first version, because version two is great, but because of that Silent Interlude cover. The one that tops the list for me is a character that to me is as cool as Snake, Shockwave. I have to say I love both versions of Stormshadow. Version one is that classic 80's ninja look, and with that Cobra logo, I though he look pretty cool, and version two, with that hood and the rope sculpt around the chest was great, though the red back pack and katana... I always gave him version one's backpack lol. Sci-fi if painted in an olive green rather than that neon green would have looked a whole lot better, I like the sculpt, but I wouldnt say he was the start of the decline, because there were a lot of wicked awesome figures and characters that came after him. Thanks for the great video, see you in the next one!

Great thing about lists like this they're so personal.. Still need a Scarlett. I saw SS V2 in the stores and I passed on him, largely because he wasn't the V1 SS which I had always wanted. The figure was good, but it was like wanting New Hope Luke or Bespin Luke and only being able to find Hoth. Flint _was_ the UK Action Force line. Sci-Fi the worst?! I used to like him... but I _can_ see how he was a sign of changing times, and it wasn't long after his wave that I abandoned collecting Joes. Does anyone know if anywhere sells Action Force repro cardbacks? I know people make GI Joe ones, but I can't find the AF version anywhere.

What about Zartan? How could you possibly skip over him? I thought there was rumor that the psychological profile on the back was so disturbing that he might have been discontinued for a while. That was one of the best three and three quarter inch Joe's I'd ever seen. Very mysterious.

This is a list of the best figures on the GI Joe team and there’s a separate video on Cobra action figures

Loved Action Force! Used to use Star Wars vehicles with AF figures - much better with bendy arms and legs! Also unscrewed the figures and mixed up body parts to make my own characters.

Totally agree, Snake-eyes, Storm-shadow, and Duke define GI Joe.

Awesome list. I was sad to see one of my all-time favorites didn't make it on the list. Low Light.

I still have my favorite Joe's like both versions of snake eyes, both versions of storm shadow, hung ho, and some others factory sealed. I bought 3 spirit iron knife figures but had to open one to put on my desk. I've never been to a G.I. Joe convention but it is on my to do list.

The 7 year old me remembers that the version 1 of storm shadow could not hold his swords and they were so small and were lost quickly. A red sword with a thicker handle was so wizard!

I just now found out Storm Shadow later defected to G.I.Joe!

I always loved Snowjob. He was one of my first toys. I liked his skis. Also, I remember getting Shipwreck and thinking he looked kinda different. Of course also loved Snake eyes, too. Flint was one of my first toys I can remember. I also thought Survival looked kinda cool. So many to choose. I received the dreadknocks as a birthday gift one year and the cobra moccasin boat. Those were good memories having them get beat up by Joes. And I always had the cobra twins Tomax and his brother with me everywhere I went for some reason they always got to come along. Such great memories from this video. It would be very tough to make a top 10 list.

Snow Job was the first and best GI Joe that I got. Snake Eyes was second then Duke.

My brother had sent in the proofs of purchase to get Duke. He was a special offer through the fan club at first.

Oh my, this is the 1st list that I can agree with. Fun fact barbecue was my 1st figure as well, followed by airtight, tele viper and a crimson guard which also makes me biased toward barbecue. He will always be my favorite figure for that reason. Edit: u don't like sci-fi! Lol. Love sci-fi, blizzard is another honorable mention
