These guys did awesome getting the word out early on this! We werent completely prepared for Ida and I actually got stuck at home and had to go through it. By the time we knew where it was going and how bad it was going to be there were no hotel rooms available for several states in each direction. It was 5 weeks with no power. We had enough supplies for about a week. All gas stations were shut down for about a 5 hour drive! Eventually we found gas and purchased a generator and more supplies. Things got bearable after that but still pretty crummy. We don't usually get that much damage in our area so it was really unexpected. They did awesome with this storm!❤

Consensus of models show Cat4+. Surprised Accuweather isn’t warning that a 4 is likely. Some models are showing a 5 just the same as a 3. This one is gonna be devastating. People should start evacuation tonight or tomorrow and plan for the possibility of displacement for quite some time.

I've heard the government has its own insurance agency that covers people in those situations, which makes me wonder why the government doesn't just replace private home insurance altogether with a state run program. It doesn't have to make profit for shareholders and it survives just fine if the spending exceeds the income. It would be cheaper for homeowners because it pays out everything it takes in and they wouldn't have to fight over claims like they do with the private companies.

Even the governor is limited at this point other than declaring states of emergencies in various counties and shifting existing state resources around, like the FHP, National Guard, the State Guard, and other agencies. Get a grip. And yes, I am a long time Florida resident. As a ham radio operator, I will be monitoring the SARNet (State Amateur Radio Network), a collaboration between the FL Department of Transportation, state and county EOCs, and Ham Radio Operators in the state. I'll monitor my county's EOC repeaters too. SARNet provides backup communications for state and county emergency operations state-wide. A ham operator in the panhandle can talk with another operator in the Keys through networked repeaters. It has been used successfully several times, as recently as this year for Debby in early August. The backup communications feature were needed in Suwanee County and for the State EOC. An operator in Suwanee County had to call for help for a water rescue as phones were out and another operator in Jacksonville heard the call and got help on the way.
