Hi Dave, thanks for a great video as always! I just have 2 quick questions. 1. What happens to the anion in the strong acid, chlorine in this case? 2. What is the gas that is produced by the reduction of the alanine? My guess is that both questions can be answered in the same way: the anion is ditched by the proton and forms a gas. Is this correct? If so, should there be a warning to not try this at home due to the dangers of chlorine gas?
@kudosdc2 жыл бұрын
It’s a chloride ion and it goes nowhere. It is dissolved in the water along with aniline ion. There is no gas product in this reaction. The pressure build up comes from the volatility of the ether.

In an OC lab course the lab assistant provided a good life hack: if you're unsure which layer is which, just draw a line with a marker where both layers meet. Add a little water: if the level of the seperating line remains in line with your marking, then water is the upper layer. If it is raised, water is at the bottom

Nope. Organic bases and acids don't react spontaneously. They have a higher energy barrier and always require catalysts to react with each other.

How do you decide which acid or base compound will work better for the extraction? Is it pH based or is it experimental
@kudosdc2 жыл бұрын
Strong acid and strong base unless there is a reason not to. His choice to use NaHCO3 as the base was confusing to me. Carbonates are generally a poor choice for acid base extractions due to the generation of CO2 gas, which results in foaming, emulsions and rapid pressure buildup in sep funnels.

In NyQuil that makes us fall to sleep. Great video By the way, berry well explained and detailed... I Wish you would be the one person directing every single video on KZbin. Use physical properties to separate. Solubility Polarity/dipole moment Water polar Ether non-polar To get NaCl and cholesterol lipid respectively. . Complex: 3 compounds (acid/base/neutral) Add water aqueous + ether organic (cmpnds don't separate, but ether/water do) 1. 4-cholorAnilane base Add HCL and water multiple washes to get Anilane salt 2. benzoic acid Add base NaHCO3 to get aqueous water layer from ether. And benzoate ion 3. What's left is ether and neutral 1,4dibromobenzene add drying agent NaSO4 . To get solid back: Cook ether volatile cooking. Anilane salt + NaOH cold water bath 4-choloroanilane precipitate. Vacume filter the crystals. . Benzoate ion+ HCL... benzoic avid crystals form PH 2 at completion. Vacuum filter for crystals.
