I hold views. You hold views. People have opinions. Being "professional" doesnt mean you have to suppress your views, but to act in the best interest of creating a great product. You put the project as your priority over your preaching. You can play with asking questions, but should avoid to offer answers. Let people come to their own conclusions. Its fun to have political debates inside a game. Its escapism, and even in my escapism i can enjoy roleplaying in a fractured kingdom with the crown as one party and the rebellion as another party, and how that interplay works. But when you just tell your buyers how they ought to feel about it, its just comes across as preachy and that the author "knows better than you". And if we know one thing, it's that alot of people think theyre smarter than they really are, and we live in a generation with profound lack of humility.

The true controversy in the OSR? Ascending vs descending armor class.

I absolutely prefer Ascending Armor Class and the getting rid of To Hit Charts and replacing them with a Basic To Hit modifier based on Class Type and Level. Basically, Castles & Crusades has BY FAR the best combat system.

Well said. I've had similarly tiresome conversations explaining my appreciation of ACKS, where aspects of the game's design is bizarrely evaluated based on the "received wisdom" that has been circulated about the author (which happen to also be trivially disproven). I hope the last decade of condescending, "free speech for me but not for thee" purity spiraling amongst a certain wing of our hobby is on the wane.

The same goes for all of the truly creative people of the past (almost all white men, the HORROR!!) as modern day, supposed creatives keep on borrowing from the past to profit off of it.

Exactly, you only have to observe the content WOTC produces to see what happens when so called modern creatives try to measure up to the giants of the past. It’s not a meritocracy nowadays in D&D, it’s how many DEI boxes you tick.

I'm going to go into the way back machine and point out that Warhammer Fantasy Role Play was filled with politics, to the point of lampooning British celebrities and politicians of the day. You knew how the authors felt about Thatcher, the Torries, and the upper classes. Anyone who's watched Saturday Night Live through the years understands, and appreciates, that they will be poking the bear in a humorous way- from Regan, Gore, Bush, church ladies, and so on. So, chill-out, Honey-Bunny. Put the gun down. This isn't the end of Western Culture as we know it. We can survive a little politics, a little disagreement over AI, and so on. The world would be a drab and colorless place without a little controversy to spice it up, even if it doesn't amount to anything in the end. We need people with controversial views, if for no other reason than to remind us that we're okay. But I'm from the West Coast and there's no idea that's too crazy out here. It makes us good innovators, and crappy governors, I suppose. I'm down with Sunday, BTW.

@@zpacula after a thorough read through of the spells list / descriptions, there is no such spell. This is the perfect example of outsiders attacking a product with either no real knowledge of the product or with I’ll intent to slander the product or creator. Troll, hobby tourist or perhaps both.

I'm pretty sure LotFP has a book about r*ping kids, which is pretty controversial content. Also in general the OSR tends towards holding older views on things like race and alignment or race and stats, which are controversial attitudes in modern times. If you make a rule in your book saying X race has lower intelligence as a rule that's a controversial thing to do and that's common to many OSR products. It's telling that most OSR products have moved away from other things like sex-based stats (women having lower STR as a rule for example) indicating an awareness within the community of these controversial components.

1. I was only referring to the rule book of LotFP, I don't have any adventures but if one does contain that kind of content then I do not approve and would not buy it. 2. There was never a problem with alignment, racial stats or traits and there still isn't, because the races in D&D are not real nor are they analogous with real people. 3. There is nothing wrong with lower STR for females, on average, because that is scientifically proven. That is the reason for different male and female standards of physical fitness in the military.

@@DM_Bluddworth The controversy is that that material reinforces those ideas as socially acceptable, which many people today consider socially irresponsible. There are many scientific truths we handwave, no OSR books I've seen have DMs rolling on random tables how often characters need to go to the bathroom. If you choose to mandate lower STR for females in a fantasy world while handwaving other elements you're making a politically involved choice which affects a certain subsection of people, which is controversial to most players.
