For over a hundred year there was a Jewish cultural flowering in Egypt, followed by the exiling of the community. Yves Fedida is the expert and tireless campaigner for Jewish heritage of Egypt. In looking at the community's genealogy, he will discuss its structure, including the nationalities held by members and their socio-economic situation. Much of the Egyptian Jewish archives have been removed to the Egyptian national archives where it is inaccessible to most researchers. Yves will discuss available genealogical sources. Finally, he will discuss what is in the communal archives which we hope the Egyptian Government will choose to open at some point.
Yves Fedida was born in Alexandria in 1945. His grandparents came to Egypt from Palestine. The family was expelled in1956 after the Suez Crisis. Yves later settled in France. He worked in a non-ferrous international trading company and then as president of a fittings factory. In retirement, he lives between the south of France, Israel, and the UK. In 2002 he co-founded of the Association Internationale Nebi Daniel for the preservation of Jewish heritage in Egypt. He has travelled extensively to Egypt, lobbying the Egyptian authorities through various channels mainly on the matter of Jewish communal registers. He was able to inventory the Torah scrolls of Cairo. The association cemented footpaths in a cemetery and carried out major cleaning work in three of them. It lobbied for the restauration of the great Alexandria Synagogue where they managed to organise a Hanukat Habayit ('housewarming') with 180 people from all over the world. Yves manages the Nebi Daniel website, the Heritage of Jews in Egypt Facebook page and the Preservation of the Heritage of the Jews from Egypt KZbin channel.
