2nd comment: So quick into first: Three guitarists on this track: James Burton Charlie Hodge John Wilkinson And there is both a pianist and an electric pianist as well on this track: Piano: Glen D. Hardin Electric Piano: David Briggs Mark James wrote this song. Same guy who wrote "Suspicious Minds", "It's Only Love", "Raised On Rock", and co- wrote "Always On My Mind". He also wrote other songs for other artists. But the songs listed above are the songs that Elvis recorded as well as this one- "Moody Blue". Knowing Mark James's personal story behind "Suspicious Minds" I'm thinking his wife may have been an inspiration for this song. She suspected Mark James of cheating on her with an old flame of his (that he later admitted that he realized he still loved but he was by that time married- hence why in "Suspicious Minds" there's the verse "We're caught in a trap/ I can't walk out/ I love you too much baby". Mark James wrote that song when he realized he was loved his wife and this other woman with whom had a past relationship. He couldn't walk out on his wife because he loved her too.) So I'm thinking that his wife's behavior reflected her suspicions of her husband not being faithful. I know this song was written years later but one can never predict when inspiration is going to strike. (This may sound bonkers but I creating characters came completely random to me. It's like you get this idea for a character and then you want to write their story. Having read about the writing process for authors of all kinds this is not at all unusual. Inspiration strikes you in the middle of a conversation, when you're standing in line, when you're at work or at a store and overhear a snippet of a conversation. Or you could just spot someone in a crowd and like the way they slouch and think that would be an interesting little detail for a character in a story to exhibit.) Anyways, as a woman I always just heard the way of just women are through a man's point of view. Yes, all humans can be unpredictable at times. But women are more emotional generally speaking. For an example: I am the most even tempered person. But when I'm bummed people who know me can tell. I can't hide what I am feeling. Aaaannddd when THAT time of month comes around... I notice I'm more impatient and things that would not normally bring on the water works makes me weepy. It's just my emotions are turned up on a higher frequency during THAT time of month and it s*cks. Oh, and I am also more forgetful during THAT time of month as well. I know "pregnancy brain" is a thing. But I make the argument (and my sister agrees with me) that there is also such a thing as "period brain". Fun fact: During their period, women do experience anemia. Every month for 5- 7 days, all over the world, women are anemic. Hence why the "drained of energy" feeling and the hangry grumbling stomach. Oh God, the Hangry pangs are terrible... Anyhoodlians! OMG YOUR HAIR! YOU HAD TOTAL ELVIS GOING ON! IT WAS MOVING ABOUT BUT IT ALWAYS WENT BACK IN PLACE! THAT'S NOT HAIR GOALS... IT'S HAIR MAGIC 🙌🙌🙌🙌 AND YES! BLOODY VOLCANO ELVIS VIBES ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋 LOVE THIS ONE! Well family, i was dreading a bit that Seth you would get to Moody Blue because its nearing his final songs he recorded. A bitter and sweet moment because this is one of his bests.. it had it all, in fact the Elvis got to have a disco rhythm as well. And yes, its a type of song that gives goose bumps.

Love this one. Elvis could do anything couldn't he? Many Elvis songs were not long enough. Remember back in the 60's and 70's songs had to be short enough to fit on a 45 record. Anyway, the short ones always leave you wanting more. 😊😊😊😊😊 With all the good songs Elvis performed, Colonel Parker was responsible for him not getting more of them and even better ones - he wanted too much of the pie, too greedy.

Opening features electric piano by David Briggs; a Moog is on the track too - overdubbed by Shane Keister. Contemporary Country (indeed it was Elvis's first Country No.1 single since 1957!). It was loved on Country radio! Listen to Elvis deliver it country especially on 'Tell me who I'm Talkin' to'. But it's The Elvis way, and we have disco (that hi-hat!). This mid-tempo, modern-sounding performance fitted snugly into the UK charts too, where we enjoyed both lots of airplay, and then the sales to follow that propelled it into the singles top 10 chart during early 1977.

Good song. I’ve heard it thousands of times. I think you’re more so ranking the songwriting and arrangement. They are both exceptional. I tend to rank Elvis’ catalog based on his performance. It’s well documented that he was really struggling during this time. It was hard for them to finish his last two albums because he was so erratic. He pulled it together here. You wouldn’t want to hear the outtakes. They’re tough to listen to. Top 150-200 Elvis song.

1st comment: Paused at 4:41 time stamp. Yes. The synthesizer was actually around for longer than people think. Remember Monster Mash Seph? Recorded back in the 1960's- that song used a synthesizer. My Mom remembers the Moog synthesizer which became quite popular to use I believe in the latter half of the 1960's. Though I do recall two guys that invented what we know today as a kind of proto- type of the nowadays synthesizer back in the 1950's at Princeton University. I cannot remember now but I think engineers and musicians alike have been tinkering with synth- esque technology going back to the either the later 1920's or the earlier 1930's. So the synthesizer- as well as the concept- is older than some think. The synthesizer is most especially popular to use in the rap music genre. Just sayin'. Anyways, carry on Seph 😊

Interesting. On the recording session info it lists both a piano (played by Glen D. Hardin) and an electric piano (played by David Briggs). James Burton was lead guitarist on this track. (James was known as "The Master Of The Telecaster"; he is still alive but I don't know if he is still active or not on the musician circuit; his health was touch and go I think a year or two ago. Elvis fans all over the world sent him and his family prayers and well wishes via social media mostly. James was very moved, and was very humbled by it.) But there were two others as well: Charlie Hodge (Elvis and him were dear friends going back to 1958 when they met in the army). John Wilkinson (one of the original members of the TCB band). Just to give you some added info anyway. As always I hope you are well Brad 💖🙏💕

He wouldn't even go into the studio to record this. He had them put together a mobile studio and bring all the equipment into Graceland for him so that he could sit down in his room and sing. They put together the entire album and did all the sessions without his input, then brought the music to him and he sang over it. Just goes to show you the genius of the producers and musicians. And what a great voice he still had, considering he was sick as heck and wouldn't live much longer. His output from these last two or three records isn't great, even stuffing old live performances into the albums to fill in the spaces between the new studio recordings. Almost like he was trying to phone it in. And yet there is greatness present. A great vocal, and a great record that makes you think of how many great records this man could have made if he had gotten himself healthy.

This song took a while to grow on me and though he sings it magnificently, it still wouldn't make my top 300. I consider this to be the personality disorder song. The tempo is upbeat but the lyrics are so depressing. They describe the cycle of someone struggling with mental health so well and also do a great job telling how it is being the person on the sidelines wanting to help but not really knowing how. You love the person and you know the person, but often times the disorder can make them unrecognizable. Still, what can you do except to "keep hangin' on". The most poignant part of the song for me is right before he repeats the chorus at the end where he states, "I'm afraid for my moody blue." A reluctant confession, but only after stressing how much she is loved and cared for by him, because there's guilt behind feeling this way when you're not the one suffering from the condition but it's also terrifying living like this, especially if the person with the disorder is in denial or has refused treatment. This song is the epitome of, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Elvis's Moody Blue was a worldwide top of the charts song. I heard it so often on the radio in my childhood that I grew really tired of it. I have never been a fan of this song.

I was commenting the other day about how much I enjoyed "For The Heart." I had said that it was much better than "Moody Blue" of the same time period. I don't get the attraction of "Moody Blue."

I call it *burn out* I used to love "Louis Louis" but then I listened to it like a thousand+ times and now I really don't care for it anymore. It's just burn out 😅

I only liked his pre-mid- sixties stuff.
