If you haven't done the 1968 come back videos, I would love to watch you do If I Can Dream and challenge you not to cry. You will lose lol. I watched it so many times that I should be tired of it but it won't happen. I love Elvis and all he stood for. I cried for days when he died. I watch David Phelps ALMOST as much as I do Elvis. He sings some Elvis too. If you ever watch his video doing Elvis please read what he pinned first. There will be a new respect.

"I've never been this happy in my life" You truly get it and now understand the power of elvis. I'm a 47-year-old guy who has been infatuated with his entire life my entire life. It's sad that most people think he just sang hound dog then had a miserable life of drugs and then died. Very common misconception. He was an incredible talent and lived an insane and generous life. Every celebrity who ever met him said he was the most incredible looking human being they had ever met and a lot of them even said you could have your back to the door and when he entered and you coud physically feel his presence. There is so much more you have to see! Check out the song If I Can Dream from the 68 Comeback special.

I get goosebumps every time I hear the low tones and the transition in his voice when he hits the high notes. I know you are exploring his career in chronicle order. Mike Handley, narrator & TV/radio spokesman, in the 'The Jim Bohannon Show', airing on 600+ radio stations on the Westwood One Network, said: "When healthy and serious, he was flat-out the world's greatest singer. In his voice, he possessed the most beautiful musical instrument, and the genius to play that instrument perfectly; he could jump from octave to countless other octaves with such agility without voice crack, simultaneously sing a duet with his own overtones, rein in an always-lurking atomic explosion to so effortlessly fondle, and release, the most delicate chimes of pathos. "Yet, those who haven't been open (or had the chance) to explore some of Presley's most brilliant work - the almost esoteric ballads and semi-classical recordings - have cheated themselves out of one of the most beautiful gifts to fall out of the sky in a lifetime. "Fortunately, this magnificent musical instrument reached its perfection around 1960, the same time the recording industry finally achieved sound reproduction rivaling that of today. So, it's never too late to explore and cherish a well-preserved miracle, as a simple trip to the record store will truly produce unparalleled chills and thrills, for the rest of your life; and then you'll finally understand the best reason this guy never goes away." I think he covered it. ❤️

About that suit, it was a Vegas invention. Elvis wanted to be seen on stage. He took advice from none other than Liberace on how to sustain an act in Vegas. Was it over the top? Absolutely, but It was Elvis so it was cool. And if you don’t know who Liberace was, look it up. He was amazing in a totally different way than Elvis but they adored one another. They had a lot in common, including having an identical twin who died at birth. Great reaction. Elvis touches souls. Sometimes it really doesn’t seem like he could have been human.

I've been an Elvis fan my entire life and his death literally devastated my little world as a child. He touched my heart and will never leave it. Anyway, rhe suit and the sweating... About that, it's not just the lights. Those suits of his were HEAVY, weighing anywhere from 25-30 pounds each. They were also made of wool! Wool!!! No wonder he lost a gallon of water in sweat in each performance! Nowadays we have much better blends of fabric for performing onstage, but this was what he had to work with then.

Elvis in person is mesmerizing. I’m glad you are seeing the evolution of his career. While Elvis was doing movies he wasn’t allowed to do live performances. He missed being in front of audiences and when his contract in Hollywood was terminated he needed something big to boost his career. That’s when he did the 1968 Special. It was a master piece in its production. Every song from the jam session reflected Elvis the great entertainer. Very natural, relaxed, down to earth, beautiful and funny. This is Elvis at his absolute pinnacle Seph - and so glad you get the same feeling that we get every time we see or hear this. By August 1970 Elvis was back on top, not just the king of rock 'n' roll, but now arguably the King of entertainment. The six shows filmed by MGM for That's The Way It Is show Elvis at the height of his powers. He had managed to combine the theatrics and bombast of Vegas and incorporate them in his show, which resulted in a performance that was almost as much Broadway as Las Vegas. Now Elvis had finally found a way in which to integrate all of his musical influences, and country music for example, finally had a place within the Elvis repertoire. Probably the biggest influence on Elvis, and that closest to his heart was gospel music, and in 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' he found a song in which that influence could shine through. Whereas the original recording by Simon (the song's composer) and Garfunkel is somewhat subdued, Elvis turns it into a powerful showpiece. This performance from 11 August 1970 Dinner Show, only the second time that he had sung it live, is Elvis Presley at his absolute peak, and anyone who hears this cannot possibly have any doubts as to his vocal prowess or to the magnificent entertainer that he had become. Many fans point to the performance at Greensboro Coliseum almost two years later, the rendition included in the 'On Tour' movie as their favourite. Whilst acknowledging that it is a fabulous performance it seems to lack the freshness of those from August 1970. The essence of those early renditions of the song is that it builds from very low key to an amazing crescendo at the climax but from 1971 this is lost because it the power comes at you from the outset. That being said, the climax to the 14 April 1972 version is absolutely incredible. In his book 'Heartbreak Hotel' author and music critic Robert Matthew Walker writes of this performance: 'Presley's outstanding singing is not disguised; this is a fabulous version, burning with sincerity and power, and finding depths not revealed by it's composers' It was widely written around this time that after after witnessing an August 70 rendition of the song in Vegas that Paul Simon said 'That's it we might as well all give up now' although he has since denied saying those exact words. However in Rolling Stone magazine interview: Paul Simon later noted that Presley's rendition of his song was a "touch on the dramatic side." "But so was the song," he added. "When I first heard Elvis perform 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, 'How the hell can I compete with that?'"

Glad you covered that. And his transitions in each where smooth and with a nutural ease. All said you were very aware of his presence. Even had a step brother who worked with him said, if Elvis walked in, he knew he was there without hearing or seeing him. That’s an anointing on one.

Hi Seth, saw your first reaction to this & came back today to watch it again. Yours has got to be the most wonderful reaction to an Elvis live performance I've ever seen. It was sheer pleasure watching you. You've not too far to go now before you've completed your journey of Elvis's recordings & then you'll be on to a whole lot of live Elvis performances. :)

Oh Seph, you have so much beautiful Elvis music to react to from the 70's! Elvis was rebirthed in 1968 (the 68 Comeback Special) and his run in Las Vegas 1970 through to the Aloha From Hawaii concert in 1973 was legendary. I can't wait to see you react to more of his performances from 1970, and definitely do American Trilogy (Aloha from Hawaii, 1973). It's absolute 🔥 🔥 fire. Your "S" list is going to get LARGE.

Seph, you had the same reaction that many of us had when we saw Elvis live in concert. I will NEVER forget going to see Elvis for the first time---when the entrance music began playing and he burst out on the stage everyone was crying even before he began to sing. Elvis affects people for many reasons, but I think God was showing off His glory when He created Elvis. Elvis always said that he believed his voice was a gift from God and never stopped improving on that gift. I actually believe his last filmed concert, which was in 1977, when he was struggling with many undiagnosable health problems, (you should read the book by Sally Hodel, Elvis, Destined to Die Young, she explains why Elvis aged so quickly between 1973-1977 and it was because of genetic issues. Some due to the fact that his maternal grandparents were first cousins) he sang some of his most powerful songs--Hurt, How Great Thou Art, and Unchained Melody (he plays the piano himself on this one). I wondered if someone was going to suggest Bridge Over Troubled Water because it really is such a beautiful arrangement of the song. Paul Simon , who wrote the song, said he didn't know how he would compete with Elvis after he heard him sing the song. However, you are in store for MANY, MANY more tear-provoking performances. I actually don't think this is his best 1970's performance--there are SO MANY!!! Also, Elvis directed his musicians on every song. He knew every drum beat, trumpet blast, and note. Eventually, you will see the rehearsal segment where Elvis is actually directing the backup singers as to when to come in and how he wants them to sing certain phrases. He was an amazing producer. It is the Sweet Inspirations singing with him. He still has the backup guys, too. I believe JD Sumner and the Imperials. And just wait til you see the unplugged session during the 1968 Comeback special. Thank you for your sincere and emotional reaction. What a gift music is to us, especially through Elvis.

I grew up in Florida and this was one of Elvis’s favorite places to come and perform. My mom saw him when he was just starting out in 1956 in St Petersburg. My dad was actually a bigger fan than my mom. He took me to see him first in 1974 and then again in 1976. We waited in line for hours for tickets in 1976, and when we were almost at the box office they said the show was sold out. You should have seen the crying-I mean people were sobbing. Then the next thing we hear over the loud speaker is Elvis has agreed to add a show--we were at the front of the line and were able to get near front row tickets. Elvis came out to the 2001 Space Odyssey. He burst on the stage in a white jumpsuit and cape. I thought the show was wonderful! He seemed happy and totally with it-joking around with the audience and singing great. When he came toward our side of the stage I almost got trampled by girls rushing the stage-that was a bit scary. The women/girls really lost their minds-so focused on Elvis they didn’t notice anyone else around them. He brought up the lights at one point during the show so that he could see all of us out in the audience-he sang a short song about it being good to see us-I can’t remember the name right now. It was a memorable night-and I am so thankful to have seen him live.
