Kagura is one of the most humane characters in Gintama, or in fiction. She's a naive young kid who only has gintoki to look up to. So she picks her nose, lazes around like gintoki. She says random lines from tv shows she sees. But she's also girly and wants stuff like umbrellas or to be called cute. Best girl and best daughter for a reason and she must always be protected.

Good work, a few ideas around Kagura, because there is so many aspects here to look into, and that may be the problem you are having. 1) Kagura is also the most "Shonen Protagonist" character in the cast. She is special by blood, in a place unfamiliar to her, and the challenges she wants to face are far larger than she is. Her Yato nature. One's own nature is perhaps the greatest challenge and person can in fact face, and is part of why Gintoki left her to Umibozu during that arc. He Had Been the Shonen Protagonist. He fought the government and entire worlds to save his master, and he lost. He lost in the most brutal way possible. Seeing her challenge something even bigger than what he faced he would rather crush her hopes here rather than have her turn out like he did, or worse. 2) Her relationship as Gintoki's adopted daughter is an Enormous source of pressure for him to reform his behaviors. Having to feed her, to take care of her needs Forces Gintoki to put himself out there and get work. The responsibility for another person is Essential in helping Gintoki heal throughout the series. And further he not just succeeds but exceeds expectations. It can be said that Gintoki dragged the Universe to Earth for his daughter, as what else can Umibozu and Kamuri be to Kagura but her entire Universe. She set out on this journey to find a way to live in peace as a family, and Gintoki is the one that helped her become strong enough and them to cool off enough to bring them both back to her. 3) Kagura is very much the emotional core, and one of the ways that is really shown is in her bonds with other characters. She has nicknames for every single character in the series, names that show her particular bond, and how her bond is affecting the other person. Heck an entire video series can probably be done on the particular names each character in this series uses for each other. The honorifics and nicknames are Truly intense.

Perhaps Kagura was the first shounen female protagonist who had her dark side (berserk yato mode). She is my favourite.

I love Gintama for a lot of things. One of witch being Kagura. The heroine that isnt a love Interest, who is bratty, strong, but all in all a girl. A daughter and a damn good one. All the Female characters are written well. I thing Kyuubei is my favorite written female character. My favorite all in all is Tama but shes under used. All in all the character writing is peak.

You just described a common female character. Why do people keep pretending not being a love interest isn't common????
