Excellent analysis on the inmates, I love content like this. Dorian is probably the overall strongest inmate and easily the most complex. He was born with all the tools a martial artist could ever wish for. A strong body, a clever mind and many unique talents. This fast-tracked him to the upper echelons of martial arts, but he became more concerned with achieving victory than gaining strength, leading him to employing cheap tricks and picking easy fights. Eventually these tricks overtook his training and stifled his abilities. It took Doppo and Retsu to remind him why he became a martial artist in the first place. His problem wasn't that he never won, it was that he always won. Dorian was defeated by victory.
@tillburr6799 Жыл бұрын
Spec seems to be the strongest. His physical might is obviously greater, as there seems to be no real technique when he breaks things, just strength. Its shown that he can take bullets that would crack a normal mans bones, and he smiles throughout it. As well as him shooting himself in the cheek just as a party trick. He is shown to be almost omnipresent, just appearing as he wishes, shown to be the most threatening. Everyone else survived through being strong, spec escaped his cell and was portrayed as some horror fiction monster. And he was the only inmate to be shown to be an actually dangerous combatant in his defeat.

@throwaway-r6v Жыл бұрын
No, Doyle was not a hypocrite. He fought by a "Any means necessary" mindset, and that never changed, running away from Retsu when he used Kunai or martial arts was not him being a hypocrite. Him being a hypocrite would be him declaring that what Retsu was doing is unfair, he never did this. A hypocrite or hypocrisy is when someone's words or actions are condemning another for doing something that they themselves do. Eg: Telling someone they're wrong for smoking when you yourself are a smoker. Being a hypocrite doesn't necessarily mean what you're saying is incorrect, obviously telling someone to stop smoking even though you smoke isn't necessarily bad in any way, however you should obviously be doing the same. Typically even this wouldn't be considered true "Hypocrisy", giving someone good advice you yourself don't follow isn't being a "bad" hypocrite, but if you were to harm them, treat them poorly, or generally do or cause something negative to them for doing what you do, then that is bad hypocrisy as you might imagine. Back to the original point, Doyle running is still following the "By any means necessary" way, as he was running from a fight that was not in his favor, escaping or fleeing is still part of a "Any means necessary" fight, you are not allowing yourself to be tethered by pride or rules, nothing is holding you back from using whatever you can to win, just as nothing is holding you back from running or fleeing from a battle that is unfavorable. TL;DR : Doyle is not a hypocrite, running away/escaping/fleeing is included in "By any means necessary."
@Oera-B6 ай бұрын
Hypocrisy also ascribes acting as something you are not. Doyle cannot claim to seek defeat yet only fight opponents he knows he's sure to win against, for example. He'd be acting like someone he's not, thus a hypocrite.

I would really like if Doyle (and Dorian/Sikorsky) makes a comeback as a good, legit, fair fighter, with new skills(daredvil), sense of touch. I know a lot of people also want him to return reformed so why does the author does not make that happen? It would be cool. Also, you can evolve the rest too. Some of them stay bad, some of them like Dorian and Sikorsky - get reformed, but hone their skills in new ways and levels. Maybe get the prisoners fight themselves (reformed vs bad).

@Vinnce12 Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you didn't bring up Revenge Tokyo during this video. Some would argue that it undercuts the message of what defeat truly means, but I'd make the case that it expands on it a bit. Each inmate in this arc claims to want defeat, which I think can easily be interpreted as "fight me with everything you've got and beat me." With Revenge Tokyo heavily hinting at their return, I think this phrase was more in line with what they really wanted: "Show me that I still have room to improve." One of the core philosophies of the Baki world is the importance of pursuing strength and the personal growth that comes from that pursuit. No matter how strong the main cast gets, they all acknowledge that there's always room for improvement. Even Retsu, whose whole character revolves around his pride in Chinese Kenpo, is always striving to improve his techniques. In comparison, you have the inmates. Each of them has led lives that incentivized the use of underhanded tactics, which made it all the easier for them to chalk up their victories as legitimate. It also helps that they were all incredibly dangerous even without their tricks, as shown when they all managed to escape their respective imprisonments with little to no effort. When victory comes that easy, the only conclusion any of them could think to come to was "I am at the peak of my strength and nothing can challenge me." They didn't fight to improve because, as far as they were concerned, there was no room for growth. In going to Tokyo, the inmates wanted to do one of two things: They wanted to find someone who could properly test them in a way that made them WANT to improve their skills, and if that didn't happen, they wanted to prove to 'legitimate' fighters that their way of fighting is superior. Dorian, Spec, and Doyle fall into the former, Sikorsky and Yanagi the latter.

@venomshot2815 Жыл бұрын
Sikorski's defeat was ridiculous, you'd think biscuit would have beat some terror into him, but no the writers pulled a terminally ill looking character out of their ass, who literally turned invisible by throwing sand in the air, with how many times Sikorsky came back it wouldn't make any sense for him to just be terrified, especially someone who he'd easily beat on asphalt or concrete

@venomshot2815 I definitely see what you're saying. His tango with Oliva by the logic of the series given the Ruskie terror. But, you could infer that he had no fear of someone whom he fought in a straight manner. Not to make up for bad writing or character development though, he pieced up Igari, and tried to beef with Yujiro, Baki, Oliva, and Jack all of which are straight up fighters. But the moment an opponent he couldn't fight through means of deception came along, his resolve crumbled. But like I said, I'm not going to defend bad writing, this all is just my pure opinion.

Each were so strong they sought out defeat to gain more strength and by losing, in Revenge Tokyo we see just how strong they can become. Doyle becomes akin to Daredevil, Dorian gain a ton of leg muscle, Speck was training in his mind regaining his muscle mass, and Sikorsky has new gripping power to the point he can stick to walls. They wanted defeat in the form of death while they did everything in their power to kill the other person/people.

I've always looked at the baki universe like a children's argument. I'm this really cool strong guy. And then here's the even cooler stronger guy. And then there's an event. Coover cooler, stronger, stronger guy.. And here's a man that can stop tectonic plates from moving with just up punch. It's just a absurdism that's pretty entertaining sometimes.

I’m glad that Baki is happy to just have “All the characters vs” style arcs these days, but man, we really gotta see these 5 come back with their buffs at some point. Each of them was teased. It’s gotta happen eventually. That, and we gotta get a third Hanma brother. These things have been clearly set up, but the creator is too focused on hyping up Sumo wrestlers.

This was an excellent breakdown of season 1 of the Baki Netflix original. I honestly think that what you outlined is also why I hated all of the deathrow inmates so much. It was so dumb and inelegant that each one mentally regressed rather than moving forward with their loss. Besides Doyle and Doyle is at least somewhat interesting.

The Dorian/Dopo fight can be represented by this quote "I do not fear the man who has done 10000 kicks once, I fear the man that has done a single kick 10000 times." Fitting considering its a Bruce Lee quote.

Fun fact Yanagi had experienced defeat twice before. He lost against Taizan very easily, but he injured him with the poison hand, causing Taizan to die in a few days. After that, Mumon, Katsumi's older brother and Taizan's student, destroyed Yanagi and was the one who put him in prison to begin with

Hey dude, loved your summaries but didn't know if it was the 'flow' of the information or the video length, but it had me lacking compared to OTHER Baki channels I subscribe to. Just my two cents, tho, great vid!! Can't wait for the Jack arc

Dorian fits into that villain archetype of "Bad guy who's strong enough to fight fairly, but chooses to be a dirty cheater". Other examples are Jagi from Fist of the North Star and Bandit Keith from Yugioh

neat review of things , liked how Doyle had the character growth, was kind of disappointed with how Dorian was such a dirty cheater thought he'd be like a super strong old kung fu master when they showed him, favorite super strong old karate master showed him the error of his ways though.

Using a weapon as a weakness, but Musashi is excused? Can someone explain?
@thisinnotmystomach6279 Жыл бұрын
i think in his case its excused because thats his martial art, while on the other hand dorian for example only uses weapon to play dirty

It’s all about intent and mindset, Musashi and Motobe fight as warriors, their weapons are an extension of themselves, I talk about the difference in my Musashi video
@lordbiscuitthetossable5352 Жыл бұрын
I think part of it is Musashi is from a completely different time period, and was *at least in the manga* an absolute monster whether he was armed or not. By the mangas end, he was able to defeat people with just his imagination, and was one of the few people who probably would’ve killed Yujiro. Because he was still screwing around. That and being a Japanese Samuari? Probably the only character in the series that was inherently undefeatable, otherwise it would mean crapping on the Japanese or some such nonsense

Revenge Tokyo is a Baki Gaiden that follows up with each of the inmates after they met their defeats.
@SephTheSin Жыл бұрын
Yeah but its been five years since it came out and seems to have been glossed over with the Baki Gaiden: Gaia & Sikorsky, so I don't know if it will ever be relevant again, plus it also seemed to be written just to tie into the 2018 anime at the time
@Rroaj Жыл бұрын
Should be noted that the bakigang take no issue fighting against weapons; it's just something they generally look down on; as this arc shows, it makes you weaker than dedicating yourself to your own body, which, in this series, is the strongest weapon. At least until Musashi shows up.

Sikorsky is such a jobber, guy lost to Baki, Oliva, Jack and even Gaia who had last appeared pre-timeskip in the original anime.
