Synopsis :- Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) is visiting Paris during the Czech annexation crisis in September 1938, but is having trouble finding a way to return to the United States, since there are transportation disruptions due to the threat of the impending war and the Munich Crisis. While visiting the office of the Chief of Police Romaine (C. Henry Gordon), who is away on business, word is received that Petroff (Douglass Dumbrille), a well-known millionaire, has been murdered. Romaine's bumbling godson, Police Inspector Marcel Spivak (Harold Huber) has been left in charge during the chief's absence, and is terrified of handling such a high profile murder investigation. He asks for Chan's assistance, which is agreed to.
Spivak suspects his butler, Antoine (Pedro de Cordoba), but spy Charlotte Ronnell (Dorothy Tree) is spotted fleeing the residence. Due to a chance encounter earlier, Chan realizes that local woman Marie Dubon (Lynn Bari) is involved, and the two detectives head to her hotel. Charlie learns that Dubon was helping her husband, Tony Madero (Richard Clarke), clear his name after Petroff accused him of smuggling. Following a clue in Dubon's room, Chan interrogates counterfeiter Louis Santelle (Leo G. Carroll). Returning to the Petroff household, Chan and Spivak track down burglars Lola (Barbara Leonard), Max (Louis Mercier), and Alex (George Davis) (who had broken into Petroff's house just before the murder) before interrogating Petroff's business partner, Belescu (Noel Madison).
After nearly being killed by Santelle, Charlie realizes that three clues are the key to the case: A dropped franc coin, a wooden leg, and a telephone left off the hook. After Belescu is shot, Chan and Spivak chase Ronnell to Le Bourget Airport. But her plane crashes during takeoff and she dies. Chan returns to police headquarters, and reveals that Antoine (a French patriot) killed Petroff after returning home early and discovering that Petroff was selling arms to Nazi Germany. Prefect Romaine says Antoine will likely stand trial for murder, but is likely to receive the Legion of Honour instead of the guillotine.

As a kid in the 1960's Toler was Charlie Chan, I didn't know about Oland, I didn't watch Oland because Toler was what I thought of CChan, but watching Oland for the first time he did a great job, so now I get to see all his for first time, they both do a great job.

Ha! That is interesting. I grew up a little later and had never seen CC movies. The first CC movie I saw a couple of years back had Oland and when I saw Toler it took a bit to get use to. The one thing they both have in common is sons that run in the room and blurt out the most inappropriate case info lol

This is when they made great movies. I love to watch Charlie Chan to the point I've watched them so so many times. It's to bad that they don't make movies like this nowadays. They couldn't do it. Also it was really sad that Oland when one day he walked away from everything. I can't recall why,

Lynn Bari, who played Marie, was second only to Betty Grable in WWII pin-up popularity (in one poll), despite being in several B movies (according to IMDb). Leo G. Carroll, who played the locksmith/forger, might be better known to some as a character actor in a few Hitchcock movies, as well as appearing, in a supporting role, in the series 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'

Nice to see a good quality HD transfer, much better than the many SD low quality transfers posted in earlier years. But it also sad to see someone stretch the image to 16x9 rather than preserving the theatrical format. Now everything is distorted, reduced in height and increased in width. It would be wonderful if you did this again, preserving the original format. Better black bars on the sides than fat faces, squatty bodies and oval circles or that ridiculously wide and short Citroen.

OMG! This was fun! You can sure see the mood of 1939 in this movie, epitomized with the closing lines of dialog: _PREFECT OF POLICE J. ROMAINE: The Primeier and British Prime Minister have been invited to Munich for a conference!_ _(pause)_ _CHARLIE CHAN: Wise man has said, "Beware of spider who invite fly into parlor."_ Neville Chamberlain was British Prime Minister when this movie was made and this was a reference to the infamous "Munich Agreement" in 1938 -- a doomed-to-fail attempt to appease Hitler. 52-year-old Leo G. Carroll as "Louis Santelle" and 32-year-old Lon Chaney Jr. as "Pierre" (the big guy at Hotel des Voyageurs.) Thanks for posting! (Next time, don't use the "stretch" feature on YT. It ruins the aspect ratio.)

Just how many movies was Harold Huber in? He seems perfectly cast as a clueless idiot in this one. Maybe I'm seeing his best performance, but even Sonny Tufts turned in one spot-on performance in "The Seven Year Itch".

@@oldgringo2001 LOL when i was a little kid (my parents were in the theatre), there was a joke they all thought was funny. it was the way you said it like in total disbelief. all it was was, “Sonny Tufts?” 😋

'stunk up"? Really? It's just a movie, the whole movie is not an especially good one. it's fun and silly and he's no worse than anyone else in it. he's alwas amusing in whatever dribble he is in.
