SEPTA Route 11 Trolley Darby Loop

The Darby Transportation Center or Darby Trolley Loop accommodates SEPTA Route 11 & 13 trolleys and is located right in quaint little Borough of Darby in Delaware County, PA.
The loop allows the single ended cars to turn themselves into the proper direction for it's next run to Center City Philadelphia.
I spent a bit of time watching the trolleys roll in and out, picking up and discharging passengers. For some reason I didn't catch any Route 13 trolleys that day even though I spent a few hours in the freezing cold. The Route 13 trolley only runs in one direction and to be honest I'm not entirely sure how they operate in Darby. I believe they run past the loop on 9th street to pick up passengers.
At 4:03 you can see the operator throw ground switches to put his car on the right track.

There used to be a track that ran on the opposite side of the seating area seen at the beginning of your video. It's been paved over since the early 90s (though, not removed) and it actually ran behind a few of the houses heading up 9th St, then actually turned ONTO 9th Street to head back into Yeadon. We used to play back there as kids, so that probably factored into shuttering it, as well. Now, any 13s have to drive to the Elmwood Depot in SW in order to turn around. It's probably not even worth running 13s to Darby these days.

These trolley routes run on numerous streets in southwest Philadelphia. A bit too many to list here. Try looking at the schedules on the SEPTA app. It’s great and even provides up to the minute tracking on the trolley you are waiting for.

The USPS always has the Right of way even over ambulances, firetrucks, police, you name it. My Dad retired from there.

Thanks! It depends on the time of day and day of the week . This was shot on a Saturday and the cars were scheduled to arrive every 12 minutes. Sometimes 3 cars would show up at the same time and sit in the loop until it was time to make a run back to Center City Philadelphia.

On average weekdays every 8-10 minutes depending on time of day and weekends every 12, 15 or 20 minutes also depending on time of day.

That’s an LED stop sign that says DO NOT PASS. They are pretty new and all trolleys may not have them yet.
