But seriously the orange trains also have the benefit of running almost always underground so they are protected from the harsh weather compared to the el cars that mostly run outside in all kinds of weather.

So instead of giving us more information about the new train cars, y'all decided to spent time critiquing the figures in the renderings? And adding a cartoon character into the images? I understand that you want to make the news intertwining but that should not come at the expense of pertinent information. Who is the manufacturer? Where will they be manufactured? Is the federal government the only financial partner with SEPTA on this project? What is the capacity of these new cars? How does that compare to the current fleet? Are there more wheelchair accessible spots on these new cars?
@neurofiedyamato87635 ай бұрын
I read an article on it yesterday and iirc it was by Hitachi. It is funded by the infrastructure bill. They will have a walkthrough gangway for higher capacity, regenerative braking, and new digital displays. There are some other features too. No idea about accessibility specifically though, although renderings show there will be at least some. Fox is a bad news source. It is very partisan and so would never be in favor of new transit projects, especially one funded by the current administration. There's not enough to trash talk so they'll find something to

Reliability has gone down a lot in the transit industry. The old "Almond Joy" Budd M3 cars for the Market Frankford Line ran from 1963 to 1999. That's 36 years, which was a good run. However, SEPTA had to make plans to replace them when the Eastbound train derailed inside the 30th Street Station back in 1990 due to a mechanical problem. About a few people died in that incident, and others were seriously injured. Then in 1996, AdTranz, began delivery of the current El cars we ride on today, but they went bankrupt as soon as the last train was delivered to SEPTA. Hopefully, SEPTA upgrades it maintenance department to handle the tech that comes with these new trains as well.

The current trains on the L have breaks that are failing WAYYY too often and are breaking down, even though the train isn’t even that old for a metro system. It's at a point where you can see how obvious coming back how the economy is being held at a stranglehold with terrible daily traffic jam and terrible public transport which people then don't use and then don't fund and then is full of crime, which results in a death spiral. By the time we get these new cars in 2030, Bangkok will get a new line extension they just announced last week with 11 stations and 29 stations in that line newly finished. American liberal cities are trying to be more European, except in the wrong way. Money should be spent on expanding transit network coverage amd increasing frequencies. However, Americans have this obsession with car infrastructure and are unwilling to reduce car lanes to make room for dedicated bus lanes and trolley tracks. The only way to make a city well connected is to limit cars to make room and provide incentives for people to take the public transit.
@piggy87614 ай бұрын
That started in the 50-60-70 decades The idea of owning a car for personal freedom was pitched as part of the American dream. It strictly needed to be used for transportation related purposes…but yes, those problems still need fixing but some problems there’s not an amount of money in the world that could fix it.
@mataisgood90465 ай бұрын
I agree there are more major problems but, Gun, and Drug issues are far more of a state and National issue. Mental Health is neglected especially in the US, but you also have to consider that the investment was into transit to improve the speed safety, convinces frequency and most importantly cost. relying on of 30-50-year-old infostructure for another 10 years will cost way more money than that needs to be spent and will save the city money to prioritize things such as mental health in the long term. As for the homelessness issue with all the money that would be saved from this investment around existing transit stations can be made to provide jobs, housing, basically anything other than more parking, and dead space.
