Nice video Tim. In the old days, from "Valley" thru "Jeff" and to Wynnefield Avenue, the line was triple-track (catenary towers show that) with the passenger trains running on the north side than 3rd track on the south as the entrance to 52nd. Street Yard. A lot of freight came down the Valley and the grade was called the Bala Grade with pushers used from north of Manayunk to Bala. At 13:33, you can see the widened catenary towers where there was a 3rd track for the pushers to cross over and lay out of the way of the commuter trains. The 52nd Street Viaduct had a passenger platform up on it in the old days too.
@3985uprr Жыл бұрын
I know how important it was years ago. Didn’t know it had 3 tracks. I know 52nd had an upstairs platform.

@@3985uprr The PRR had an extensive system of tracks that serviced the anthracite region and you could ride a passenger train over much of it, including going to Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre directly from Philadelphia. Thanks for the great video.

Nice to see SEPTA's shortest branch get some love. The second shortest branch of any commuter rail line in the U.S., second only to the Princeton Dinky if I recall. There's actually a nice little poke and ramen place in the old Cynwyd station building, and the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, while it's sad that it's not a rail line any more, it's an enjoyable place to walk. The Manayunk River Bridge particularly is really nice.

I took this train for the first time on July 31th. also the 730 car I boarded at Suburban station witch could use a good cleaning. I only rode it to Cynwyd and than walk along the Cynwyd Heritage Trail to Manayunk. Love walking over the Manayank RR bridge. Took the Manayunk Norristown Line back to Jefferson Station and onto Patco to go home.

There was a lot of talk of making this line the Reading to Philadelphia route that's been in limbo for years now. Really makes sense in my opinion.

Talk when? 2003? SVM is deader than a doornail.
@albertcarello619 Жыл бұрын
@nickcef: That's a great idea and SEPTA should seriously consider doing that.
@jimpern Жыл бұрын
For the benefit of the people who do use the line, I hope that SEPTA keeps it. It can't cost them too much to run occasional one-car trains.

@Retired Railfan Horn Guy the western portion of Zoo is not Stiles interlocking that is JO interlocking part of Zoo . I was Harrisburg Line Dispatcher Section B/C and formerly Train director Zoo Tower.

Does the Cynwyd Line act like a shuttle service but using single (1 car) trains?
@3985uprr Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t call it a shuttle service as the service is not frequent throughout the day. They generally use one Car trains, the concentrated in the a.m. and p.m. rush, and have one midday round-trip
