Poor, virtuous Lady Catherine having her tomb, opened, closed, open again & desecrated, for no reason, thrown on a pile of rubbish. It baffles me that those who fight for their own religious freedom have so little regard & respect for the freedoms & rights of others, even unto death. May she rest in peace.

Queen Catherine Parr was my Aunt. She was married to my Uncle Thomas Seymour. I am descended through Queen Jane Seymour’s brother Henry Seymour’s daughter Jane Seymour (not the Queen). We are descendants of Jane’s son William Rodney. Hearing about how Catherine Parr finally had a baby after all those marriages and died so soon after has always broken my heart. And then to have little Mary Seymour die so young with her parents already dead-wow! Just rip my heart out! I know it was the times but it just feels so gut wrenching. It is ironic that I am really only here, alive and well because my Grandfather Henry Seymour stayed out of court life, lived and prospered in the countryside and died of old age. Thank God!

@anneboleynfiles 5 жыл бұрын
They're not mentioned as being in attendance, but then Edward as king would not have gone to the funeral, and perhaps it was also seen as unseemly for his sisters to attend. I'm not entirely sure.
@nassauguy48
@nassauguy48 4 жыл бұрын
@@anneboleynfiles Well, there was always an appointed "chief mourner" who stood and prayed over the body as it awaited burial. For example, Princess Mary was the chief mourner for her step-mother, Jane Seymour. Lady Jane Grey, who lived with Catherine Parr and Thomas Seymour, was the chief mourner for Catherine. Regarding the two princesses, my take is that Mary, though she genuinely liked Catherine, could not bring herself to attend what was obviously a reformist Protestant funeral rite. As for Elizabeth, after the "fling" with Thomas Seymour, for her and Thomas to even be seen in the same room would have reignited the scandal. I do trust that the two princesses duly offered prayers for Catherine at their respective residences.

she died broken hearted, having finally married her beloved Seymore after Henry sent Seymore away so that he could marry Katherine. Upon Henry's death, Katherine got to marry her rock star crush, Seymore. But he was caught by Katherine coming on to Elizabeth I while she was still a girl, visiting Katherine one summer. Katherine was pregnant with Mary when this happened. Katherine took to her bed, never recovered. or so they say. That was bad enough but then the way her body was mishandled over the years makes it even sadder, as does the somewhat unclear fate of her only child.

Samuel Pepys writes in his diary that he visited Westminster Abbey when the tomb of Queen Katherine, wife of Henry V had been opened. He wrote that he took her in his arms and kissed her. He wrote that it was his birthday and the first time that he had kissed a queen. He wrote that in the 1660s. Queen Katherine died in the early 15th century. Now that was disrespectful.

She had been dead nearly 300 years by the time she was so badly handled. Maybe. Treadway couldn't find anyone respectable to excavate her tomb. Poor Katherine! She'd have been horrified to know how her remains were going to be treated. People of her time period believed in the bodily resurrection of the dead, making it even worse.

Thanks Claire. How awful that her remains were tossed about so much. Any reason why Mary, Elizabeth and Edward did not attend the funeral? Mary wouldn't probably because of a protestant service, but the other two??

36? Yes, definitely. Catherine had been married three times before and had never been pregnant, as far as we know, so she had probably ruled it out. It was definitely seen as "old" for a first pregnancy, but Tudor women of her age would still have been adding to their families.

Elizabeth had been sent away from the household by Catherine due to the situation with Thomas Seymour, and also the royal family would not have been expected to go to the funeral.

I would love to know what you think of the series The Tudors. Did you enjoy watching it or did you think it had too much that was incorrect or lacking evidence?

@Mala Bhargava Personally, I loved the Tudors. Dramatic works are not history - they are ruled by different conventions and people must accept that some events may be compressed into a shorter timescale or characters exaggerated or played down for dramatic effect or to suit the author's interpretation. So what does the author regard as a successful outcome? Has he captured the flavour of the. times? I think the Tudors did. The whole Reformation period was strongly presented. The movers and shakers of the day were well represented by a sterling cast. Court notables such as. Tallis, Holbein, Wyatt broadened the view of culture and art of the day. Henry:"s interest in architecture, music, religion was not forgotten. Nor his cruelty and paranoia. Nor his charm. The portrayal of Anne Boleyn and Henry's relationship was the most powerful I've ever seen and the show managed to give each of the six wives her own personality and evoke sympathy for her plight. On top of all that. there was a fabulous musical theme to all the big events. I have forgiven the writers the marriage and murder of the King of Portugal (why did they do that) because of all the positives of the period they brought to the attention of the viewing public. brought

is this story a usual thing? I have never heard of so much disruption for the remains of a person of royalty, especially for one who wasn't as controversial as others. Is anything recorded of Elizabeth's feelings regarding Catherine's passing?
@anneboleynfiles
@anneboleynfiles 5 жыл бұрын
No, it's not normal, but Sudeley was damaged during the Civil War and then slighted at the end of it, so Catherine's tomb was lost for a time. Elizabeth was said to have taken the news of her stepmother's death badly, which is understandable as they were close, but then Elizabeth was also ill at the time.

A tragic figure, despite the fact that she survived Henry. (Well, so did Anne of Cleves, but she ended up much better than Catherine). Basically forced into three marriages with much older men, she finally marries the love of her life, Thomas Seymour, who ends up cheating on her (with her willing or unwilling step-daughter, Elizabeth), and then dies giving birth to his child. (The baby, Mary, herself would die about two or three years later). Catherine was a scholar and a published author, she should have found her pastime and solace in that aspect of her life.

Claire, I have a comment that it's not directly related but a question..... I know Edward VI was married off as a teenager because at the time Mary the first was The Heir Apparent. With Protestants in control they wanted to make sure that a Protestant line continued, so they wanted to put an heir or potentially multiple heirs after Edward to prevent Mary coming back as Catholic Queen. I believe Edward was married off quickly to some Noble teenager and he wound up dying before they could produce any children and of course Mary the first became Queen of England. Since Edwards protectors were so feared of Edward not producing depressing child, and since Lady Jane Grays bloodline was considered most favorable to follow him, was there ever any consideration of marrying him to Lady Jane Grey? It is odd that she was the premiere Protestant, given the fact that her grandmother was Mary Tudor Henry the eighth's sister who opposed the break with Rome and remained a Catholic and died a Catholic and disapproved of his banquet room in marriage to Anne Boleyn. Something must have changed in the two generations passed since her granddaughter was considered the premier Protestant. She was in such high esteem that Edward tried to break the line of succession and leave his throne to Lady Jane Grey. Given the situation, why wouldn't they have tried to marry Edward to Lady Jane Grey? Especially in royalty they still married first cousins, and she was first cousin once removed. Anytime in which Catholic and Protestant at terrible odds with each other, having someone who was president enough for him to be secure to leave his throne to her, if he thought she was worthy of Queen Rainent, wouldn't she have been considered for Queen Consort? Do you know if that was ever a consideration? It would seem the obvious situation to me given that at the time royalty and nobility marrying close cousins was not frowned upon. We're up into the 19th and 20th Century in which Queen Victoria marry your first cousin and encouraged her grandchildren to marry each other. This was 400 years before, and first cousin once removed was a little farther out. So, was Lady Jane Grey ever considered for Queen Consort?

edward wasn't married, but he was bethrothed. thomas seymour had suggested he marry jane, but was dismissed, as they wanted an alliance with france, or, at least, a marriage with a princess. as to why jane was chosen over frances, it was probably because she was more likely to have sons, or because of her anti-catholic views, or perhaps a mix of both.
