A real nice guy too.I recently met him in a small village in France.I didn't tell him that I knew who he was and he didn't mention it either. We just talked for a while.
I was drawn to the stranglers in 1977 when I heard the album rattus. It was j.j 's thumping bass on the single peaches that got me by the throat. I've seen the stranglers live since 79 right up to March 2019....and they are still the best live band I've ever seen.... and j.j's bass playing is still on another level to any other bass player in the world.

What is so sad in all this is how especially three of the last few albums Giants, Suite XVI and Norfolk Coast have been pretty damn fine pieces of work that have put many supposed IN bands pieces of work to shame and all I ever see is knobs coming on here spouting of about Hugh. His choice he left so the other guys have to pack up and move on. No Way the rest of the band are happy and what ever you say it is Jet Blacks band and he can do what the **** he wants. As for hit singles get a life the charts is full of crap and some of the biggest bands in the world do not have hit singles. Music is all about enjoyment and the live experience not what some big pleb tells the teenagers and the brain dead on prime time tv every week.

thehanterman1 well firstly jet black not in the stranglers anymore he hasn't played show with them since march 2015 and jet will probably never play drums again unfortunately, it's a real shame as he's a great drummer, And also the stranglers were founded in 1974 by Hugh cornwell its Hugh's band.

what is not said is more interesting than what is... all Hugh songs aren't great but since Hugh left I can't really see a good song, and the vocals aren't really reaching the levels that made me love the Stranglers. Sure, Baz never misses the Golden Brown guitar solo and lets no bum notes fly through, but he tends to slightly rush. So that idiosyncratic Hugh angular sort of laid back spiked with urgency guitar playing groove isn't there... but hey, better than nothing 😎

what? are the questions so good they need to be edited out? Only a well deserved knighthood each will ever re-unite the 4 original members of the stranglers, 10 albums with Hugh Cornwell not enough for some people? the stranglers touring every town for 40 years not enough for some people ? personally either way i've been enjoyed and loved every minute since 1977, lifes too short and i only ever missed the strippers, spankings and Hugh's verbal abuse and drier than gin jokes ... come to think of it yeh bring Hugh back, its boring without him and i bet Jet could die on stage in time with a perfect drum beat ... that'd be a night to remember and it'd make a nice change to want someone other than Hugh Cornwell back in the band.

Well, they might as well be a franchise by now: a "Certified Stranglers tribute band featuring original members JJ Burnel and Dave Greenfield!" I hope they continue for as long as they can, it's ok if they have that Baz guy and went through a rough patch with whats his face from the Vibrators (now THERE was a class act) .I hope Jet Black's drum tech is on Stranglers salary , you know splitting it up and all now that Jet is featured on lead oxygen mask! Too bad, but the Jetster IS pushing 80, so let's not kid ourselves- I wouldn't be able to do a paradiddle at 80, I'm sure... I mean, Hugh still gets royalties so, everybody wins. I've seen quite a few interviews recently with Hugh and I must say, he is considerably more articulate than notre petit JJ. But we love JJ, with this karate and motorcycles and who can forget his smarmy, snarly angry young man persona? Everybody has a JJ story, and one of the best bass players I have ever heard, no doubt. Ahhh the Stranglers franchise- they are paying the mortgage and who can blame them for soldiering on at every summer festival imaginable? When are they gonna play my favourite Stranglers album in it's entirety, live "The Gospel According to the Meninblack"? Just like nothing on just like nothing on just like nothing on uuuuuurth.
