The reason you find coins in dwemer and nordic ruins is nothing besides an oversight by bethesda. How would a dragon priest obtain coins with Talos' face on it BEFORE Talos successfully took to power? something like a perfectly edible apple or potato in an ancient foodstuff deep underground in some cave? hahah they make some deep deep lore and there will always be silly mistakes to chuckle at. Or just install coins of Tamriel.

ONE MORE THING an iron dagger is worth more than it's weight in gold... iron........
@カスカディア国人6 жыл бұрын
Tim Walker you’re only accounting for one factor of value, the labor of dagger production plays a role too, and will be felt much more because of the lack of industrialization and the apparent lack of large scale serfdom (not to say it completely doesn’t exist, but it’s not ruling the economy obviously) of course there are too many unknowns here for us to determine whether it’s a fair value or not, we aren’t even sure of how scarce gold is in Tamriel and Skyrim compared to the real world, and you say your self coins pop up everywhere so maybe gold doesn’t have as much value as you would assume in Tamriel.
@timwalker49456 жыл бұрын
I definitely see your point Banjo, I guess I just have a habit of referencing real world or literature that's contemporary to the "time period" of Skyrim. For instance, I'm not sure if you're a GOT fan, but when The Hound went craven, Tywin said "How much would it take for the common footsoldier to try his luck against The Hound?" Littlefinger suggested 20 silver pieces, Tywin said make it 40. Implying that basically a commoner could retire comfortably on a sum like this, or live high for a while. And 200 silvers is equal to 1 gold dragon. I seriously suggest the mod Coins of Tamriel, it integrates a system quite similar to this in skyrim, making for a huge boost in immersion. Instead of a loaf of bread costing 9 gold, it costs 9 coppers, which seems way more believable and relatable IMO. Another example is a tiny gold ring being worth 75 gold coins. I'm no smith, but I think that a gold ring might take 5 coins worth of raw gold to make, and thats being really generous, craftsmanship can't possibly inflate the value 15x over, I don't care if you're Eorland Graymane lol

I think in the lore the Ancient nords had silver coins called haralds after high king harald. The dwemer had currency called Dumacs as well. There is a mod on the skyrim nexus that adds these coins to the game among some others.

I would say Skyrim even if independent will refere to the coin as Septim already because of the respect they have towards Talos Also the Dragon symbol of the current Empire came from Akavir so it was not present before the Akaviri invasions. Maybe Tiber Septim went a bit insane in his last years and went back in time (Dragon Break) to change all coins into septims to leave a mark of him for eternity but thats highly unlikely

Or it's a matter of perception, like with lockpicks. The PC is able to do such conversions in their head. It also explains why there is so little gold on Draugr/Skeletons and in burial urns: There is actually a lot of coin in there, but it's in Ancient Nord money, which has much less value.

There’s a really cool mod for Skyrim called the skyrim coin replacer redux (or something along the lines of that). It adds in different types of coins for the different types of currencies that were around during different time periods. For example, you can find Haralds & Dumacs, in places like Nordic Ruins. I personally LOVE the idea of the mod and I wish Bethesda would’ve put something like that into the game.

It makes perfect sense that the Stormcloaks continue to use Septims because redenomination is extremely expensive. It would be highly impractical for them to have already begun the redenomination process. However, I would be surprised if they still used them in the Summerset Isles, as the High Elves have been separate from the empire for a centuries at this point. Concerning why they are present in Nordic ruins, I have two theories...one possibility is that the empire at some point did currency redenomination via magic where some alteration mages cast some spell that turned all gold coins in Tamriel into Imperial Septims. This one is a bit ridiculous, but I think it's fun. The other option is that a "septim" is actually simply defined as a weight of gold regardless of the shape. This would be similar to most real world ancient currency systems. In this case, any gold coin would have the same value so long as it is roughly the same weight as a standard Septim. In this case, the laziness of Bethesda in not bothering with new textures for ancient Nordic or Dwarven coins is more excusable.

Dragons are important in almost every major religion on Tamriel. Akatosh, and the many different versions of him, are all linked to dragons, and even the Redguards, who are literally out of that world, have Satak, the Serpent. The only exceptions I can think of are Argonians with little info on their pantheon, and Dunmer with their House of Troubles, a few good Daedra, and ancestor worship. So "drake" can be quite a neutral term for any currency. Plus, kings putting themselves on the money isn't a rare practice at all, so I think it's likely that the Reman dynasty might have had different coins for different emperors, but with all previous ones still being viable currency. Tiber Septim's status as a god changes the equation a bit though. Are we gonna change our money to include a less cool emperor who's just a dude, or are we gonna keep the god-emperor who spoke fire, commanded a walking mechanical god, changed time, conquered all the known world, won some seemingly impossible victories, and survived having his throat cut? Not a hard choice, to be honest.

Your theory also explains why no coins are in different states. Look at three coins from your pocket or wallet/purse or wherever. They won't look exactly the same.

@AncientHoplite6 жыл бұрын
Domagoj Rade Actually the Nords hate the name septim. It's an imperialised version of Talos and they see this is the imperials trying to claim Talos as one of their own, when they see Talos as a true nord.

what if septims in nordic ruins are from adventurers who died there, the dragonborn cant possibly be the first to enter those ruins. and the dwemer ruins in skyrim might have been raided by the events of skyrim by mages guild or winterhold college and those places are not in use since dwemer automatons come trough the pipes from underground where no one knows how to get since the stairs or elevators have collapsed
perhaps the draugr have gambling problem and the dragon priests cheat at the poker table. it must be boring to just wake up and clean the place up every day

Dragon on one side, human on the other side. The coin is highly hinting at Akatosh, half man, half dragon god of time and creation. Its Akatosh, not Drake. It was septim because of dragon blood.
