Man, the modders behind Chrono Trigger + must have had quite a few of these instances to deal with when they allowed players to do some things out of order. One of the things you can do, is instead of leaving the End of Time to go to the Middle Ages, you can go straight to 65M B.C. to do the Red Rock quest. It lets you recruit Ayla right then, instead of having to wait for your second trip back when you tackle Tyrano Lair. Which means you can fight Masamune with Ayla. So they probably had to deal with her flying away at the start. You can also sub Chrono out of the party before the end game, which probably opened up even more broken events to fix or rewrite. Loved the video btw. Its always nice to get a peek behind the curtain, and Chrono Trigger is one of my fav games of all time.

That's extremely interesting the developer organized character palettes so consistently, I never would have thought palette swapping between the characters would end up with such good results. Seems like hair color, skin and such share the same indices between palettes!
@Zack_Wester9 ай бұрын
I think its because character sprite don't really contains colour (well I think they does the default one need to look it up). think of all the enemies in the game that have the same sprite/model but different colours. so what happen is the game loads the sprite, sets the colour that is just a list of colours. when you switch it switches to the model but still keeps the original list of colours. so let say we have a 2 high and 10 wide sprite of something reading it left to right top to bottom. it goes pixel 1-1 (colour1), 1-2, (colour1), 1-3(colour2) and so on. then it goes list the list of colors are colour1=Blue, colour2= Yellow. now if we switch the model it still does that but the colour1= does not uppdate for example from colour1=blue to Green and so on.
@swordofkings1289 ай бұрын
Yeah that's what I'm saying, you would still need to organize the palette such it works across character tiles. I'm guessing it was just easier to try keeping main character palette indices consistent so sprite artists would know 0 is outline, 1 is hair, 2 is hair, 3 is clothing, etc... for example. And programmers and other artists would be on the same page for color palette order. It's just a happy side effect that they end up looking not horrible in a lot of cases!
@RoninCatholic9 ай бұрын
This is something I'm doing as a developer on my current RPG project. Making every possible combination of character sprite and character palette at least function, even if some combos aren't that good. What counts as "blade" on a weapon and what is "handle", what is "the dominant saturated color" of a character's outfit and what is a "secondary clothing" and what is "highlights". Part of the intention is to release the resulting sprites and palettes for other amateur RPG developers, to give them something of an easily-imitable and easily-edited style that still makes at least some use of shading.

funfact square commonly does their sequences like this. ff7 is a big example of many triggers always being active meaning huge chunks of the game are skippable if you can find ways to get to them. examples being sector 7 to sector 8. cosmo canyon skip. you can actually get vincent during nibelheim flashback (crashes game). which is a good thing they do this since if you were to actually skip chunks of gameplay some times you'd be locked out of going back to continue such as sector 7 to 8 of ff7. you can also see sequences breaks in ff10 such as skipping djose won't get you ixion but you can just go right on to shoopuff ride if you find a way to do it. not sure on other square examples at this moment though.

Two things you missed. #1 What happens on Chrono's resurrection scene when you don't pick the characters that normally interact with Chrono. Such as Magus only, or a party without Lucca, Marle, and I forget the third person that interacts with Chrono. #2 Second, when visiting the rainbow shell in Guardia's basement, Marle has dialogue with the party members who remind her of something. What if only Chrono is in your party? Fun fact, if you bring Magus and Chrono, Magus' dialogue plays because Chrono never talks, and he calls Marle an idiot lol #3 Thirdly, and you somewhat covered this, but when Melchior makes the masamune, normally the game wants Lucca to be the one to help forge it, so she takes precedence over Robo. The only way to see her dialogue commenting on the completed masamune is if you do not have her in your party and have Robo instead. But when Robo is taken away, you specifically have to switch Lucca back in your party before going downstairs. It's cool the programmed Lucca's dialogue to be there. I discovered this many many playthroughs in.

Once while deactivating an instant-battle-victory Game Genie code in ZSNES it caused a weird glitch where I was able to equip any weapon on Robo, and he'd do full attack animations. This leads me to think that before they decided on giving him "arm" weapons he may have been intended to be able to equip anything. I remember giving him one of Magus' scythe weapons and he did a proper animation for the critical hit attack. However, it may be possible that like with the sprites this is something where certain sprites are simply chained based on a predetermined sequence and that they exist natively for all characters. In any case, it was kind of wild when it happened.
@chronoscat33719 ай бұрын
There is a Game Genie code that allows you to equip any weapon or armor on any character. When a character uses a weapon they aren't supposed to have, they go through their normal attack animation but with the pallet and special effects of the weapon. Sometimes it looks really cool; other times it's a scrambled mess.
@FortyTwoBlades9 ай бұрын
@@chronoscat3371 yeah in this case there weren't any pallet changes and the animation was definitely not the usual, which was the part that surprised me.
@vaiyt6 ай бұрын
The weapon effects and character animations are called in separately, so when you equip a character with the wrong weapon, the game asks for an entry in that specific character's animation list, then draws from the full list of weapon animations. When i did weapon swaps in Ogre Battle 64, the game would simply treat the new weapon as the equivalent entry in that character's weapon list. Giving the 6th entry in the sword list to a bow user would cause them to use the animation of the 6th bow. Amusingly, that also happened if I put armor in the weapon slots or whatever.

So, fun fact about the character swapping, making characters change palettes: that can be done in the vanilla game. In a later section where Robo is forced into the first character slot, he has a one-on-one boss fight, and after that fight, when your party is restored, note which characters are in slot 2 and 3. As long as you don't leave that screen, swapping them in the menu won't change their positions. Then when you go into the next encounters, one of which being that dungeon's end boss, those two characters will swap palettes with each other. Just...don't try this in the DS or any later ports of the game, as it'll just crash instead. XD

This was fascinating. As a programmer it makes me wonder in some cases why. Like, you could usually hardcode the dialogue into a scene, I wonder if the missing dialogue happened due to a fallback of some kind when it tries to retrieve the custom name ... except in other places it seems to have no problem. Then you have stuff like the Marle return which makes sense, it's likely the script there is waiting for the animation to end but, because it doesn't exist, it never properly triggers the next part of the scene. But *then* you have stuff like the wrong characters in cutscenes and *this* one I think reveals a lot about how janky Chrono Trigger was behind the scenes: this basically proves a lot of scenes were reused. Like, it's common to make "dummy scenes" for animations like these, but it would seem the developers here reused the regular scenes and, for some odd reason, expects the party composition to be just so to control behavior. My *guess* is that each party member has a unique id and this is used throughout the game, and on top of that, these objects are also used in cutscenes. Like the dummy scenes, there are apparently no dummy actors either. Still, you'd think if they needed to be in the scene they'd just ... put them in the scene in most of these cases. It's a trip. This is all just idle thoughts, but I guess in my mind Chrono Trigger was a complex and elegantly coded game and after all this I'm like, wow, it was held together with duct tape and hope!

The palette swap glitch reminds me of Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) on the SNES. If you use a hacking device to give a character somebody else's class, they'll take on its palette, the cool thing is that all player palettes are perfectly compatible. So you can have everyone wearing the same colors, or do any combination you wish. The only exception is the starting classes, which all just default to the character's default colors.
