This also works with the TR-8S via USB. First, add the TR-8S as an aggregate device using the Audio Midi Setup tool in MacOS. Windows users will need to download the ASIO4ALL driver to create the aggregate device. Follow all of Ed's instructions until you reach the external instrument setup. Set midi output to TR-8S and midi channel to 10. Assign each pad sequentially starting with channel 5 and ending on channel 15. Volume, tune, decay, and ctrl controls work for each track. Ensure that you have Ableton's midi output control for the device set to track and sync, and ensure that the TRACK AND SYNC BUTTONS FOR MIDI IN are disabled, otherwise, your TR-8S will glitch out and crash (especially if you're manipulating the onboard controls). Same rules apply from Ed's video. Do not use the onboard sequencer. Thanks for your guidance on this, Ed. It's exactly what I needed to get started.

Cool, I do the same thing with the TR-8S! I overcomplicated my setup a bit by looping the TR-8S MIDI through Live and turning off local control. This allowed me to do some stuff where I can sequence on either the Push or the TR-8S depending on my mood, and also record knob movements as automation. (The annoying bit is that I need a secondary "hardware" track permanently set to Monitor In, dedicated to keeping the TR-8S inputs flowing even when the Push is "attached" to a different device. Otherwise the MIDI CC doesn't flow. Oh, and I also had to do some wacky stuff to make sure that the notes coming out of the TR got changed to the notes of my drum rack, since I use the xpresspads-style symmetric note layout for finger drumming. All in all though, they both work really well together, and I love not having to pick out drum samples!

I tried it with my TR-8s directly connected to the PC via USB MIDI, it works pretty much the same way. All you need to do is in the Ext. Instrument "MIDI To", rather than select your audio interface select the TR-8S. As a sidenote, because this drove me nuts for about an hour: In the Drum Rack chains make sure you can see both Receive Note and Play Note - for some strange reason, my Play Note was 2 octaves higher than the Receive Note, so not C1 but C3, and hence the BD on the TR-8s wasn't triggered. I've set it to C1 and voila! :)

@mredrollo I have a little issue here...when I use the compressor on the rack I get a very disturbing white noise as well as when everything is low I get it when I turn the volume up from the speakers...Do you have the same problem???????
@mredrollo3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, no I haven’t experienced this before. Perhaps you could try i fresh TRS cable from the TR-8 to your interface to see if that’s the issue. Do you get the same noise without the Rack?

Is there any way to switch between this and the traktor/push2 interface on the fly? Or would you recommend an additional push2 on a secondary laptop?
@mredrollo3 жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly you'd like to run Traktor and Ableton Live together and be able to use my Push2 for Traktor2 mapping and the Live step sequencer on Push? Ahhh in short, no not really. You can switch between the mapping and Live using the User/Live mode but the mapping LED's don't carry across. You would have to re-load the .tsi file every time you switched view. I hope that helps.

Make sure there are no sequences programmed on the Tr-8. The sequence MUST be blank. Also make sure to check you Focusrite Control and that the Tr-8 channels are muted for direct monitoring.

I did exactly like you but nothing's happen when i press the pads of the drum rack, i see the light on of the midi out of my audio interface, and when i play on the tr8 the sound is going out of my speakers. I tryed also without the USB cable, but i can't synchronise my tr8 with ableton, do you have an issue for that mate, thank's in advance!

Did you use a 5 pin MiDI cable?

Yes, out of my audio interface (komplete audio 6) to the input of the tr-8. I watched your video 10 times 😭 Perhaps it's a driver problem or something like this, I'll try again from the beginning tonight

@@alexiscahn1679 perhaps check what MIDI channel your tr-8 is set to receive midi. By default I think it’s MIDI channel 10 but it can be changed! So look up the MIDI implementation chart or manual on how to check/change the MIDI receive channel.
@alexiscahn16793 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did that already also. I putted back the USB cable on the tr8, now I got all the midi witness on in the drum rack when I instant play on my tr-8, so everything's OK, but when I push the pads from ableton, no sound come out 😠 thanks you anyway for your time man, I appreciate and follow for sure

@@mredrollo Hi mate, basically just what ports are supposed to be on and what ones off for using hardware... I think I worked it out after posting the original question, but it was just a fluke... Also, I'm using a TR-8S and I see that it shows up as an interface when using USB... Tried using it that way and everything is doubling... Unsure of what to disconnect or turn off to prevent this... The videos are all amazing by the way!

@@richardjames111 hey mate, yeah I specifically don’t use the tr-8 as an interface. Take that USB cable and throw it away! Haha. Just a MIDI cable and an Audio cable and a secondary interface. Hey dude, thanks for this amazing help! I'm using the tr8s and everything works perfectly but when I want to playback my recordings from the tr8s the volume depends to the actual setting of the faders on the tr8s. SO when I remove for example the tr8s and want to play it back there is no sound at all on the track. Do you have any advice? cheers :)
@mredrollo3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, glad it’s working for you. For recording I always set up a separate audio track to take the input from the TR-8 MIDI channel. The set up I show in the video is perfect for live play back and performance but if you wanted to capture that then use a separate audio track. Hope that helps. I had another question about this recently so maybe I’ll do a follow up video :)

Great video thanks for that ! I also use Push2...say 30 % swing in the push, do you use it mostly for your tracks? Or do you rather use a certain one from the groove pool which is comparable to it ? ...or is it most sensible to use the swing of Push2?
@mredrollo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I always use a swing from Live’s Grooves and adjust the timing in the groove pool yeah. Swing on push is nice and convenient but not as flexible as using one of the Lives grooves :)

@@mredrollo what your favorite swing and settings for timing from Live, MPC? :-)
@mredrollo4 жыл бұрын
@@neveoney7865 I always use the most intense MPC swing. I think it’s MPC 16 Swing 72 and then adjust the Timing amount to taste. Usually i end up somewhere between 20%-50% depending on the BPM of my track and just the overall feel. More intense swings seem to work better for slower tracks. Hope that helps :)
