Software can absolutely do what this can in terms of sound, but I find even with a good MIDI controller you’re forever going “wait, what does this knob do again”, or going into your DAW to switch the arp on and off or whatever, and it’s like this huge brake on actually being creative and getting anything done. With hardware it’s seamless. If I was to drop this sort of money I think it’d be for that ease of use more than anything.
@skycron3 жыл бұрын
I find the same. Sometimes the "hunt and peck" of trying to find some menu or complicated configuration can overpower just getting something done. All musical equipment has its uses, both digital and otherwise - but sometimes, there's nothing more satisfying than just being able to shape a sound with the knobs. To me, the Prophet-5 has always has this otherworldly soul to it - haunting might be the word I would use - that has this intrinsic draw for me. It's just such a beautiful instrument. -Cory

Omnisphere, Keyscape, etc. has hardware integration with various synthesizers. I use those with my Prophet Rev2. The software also includes standalone programs, so you don’t have to go into your DAW. You get the soft synth sounds controlled by the knobs and switches on a hardware synth. You can also blend the soft synth sounds with the native hardware sounds.

i feel like the prophet 5 would be great for BOC type stuff even though i'm not sure they ever used it specifically because it has "that" Late 70s sound that would have been heard on a lot of stuff they're emulating. it definitely has a more hauntological quality than most synths.
@limbicbits3 жыл бұрын
You can get BOC-type vibes from the Prophet. But you certainly don't need it for that purpose. In my opinion, many other synths, for example a ROland SH-01a boutique, will get you there with some decent programming and processing

Thanks! I agree and think, that Prophet 5 in comparison to other synths might be a bit overrated (nowadays). But I certainly appreciate its important role in Synthesizer history. @@limbicbits the limits are not relevant. The raw tone is what matters, and peak cannot touch the p5 on that level.
@limbicbits3 жыл бұрын
@@SPAZZOID100 To me the limitations are quite relevant as there are a lot of features missing for my kind of music. For example, I'd wish that Sequential would have expanded their original concept a bit and at least include clockable LFOs, Saw Down waveforms instead of only Ramp, faster LFO speed and so on. Also, the modulation wheel routing is still almost useless unless you want it always to go full power. More connections in the modulation section would also be a great benefit. In short: It wouldn't hurt to expand the original concept into that direction and the raw sound would still have been there. And considering all that, Peak to me offers quite more at the half of the price. If you want that exact original Prophet sound, Peak wouldn't be my first choice, either though.

What do everyone here think about P5 as module? I think it's a beautiful module and seems to fit good on the desk beside the DAW. But.... Doesn't this remove alot of the P5-feeling when not having the keybed version of it? I had some rack versions of other synths and got tired of the look of them and rebought them as keyboards. However this module is so decilous with the red-led buttons and the small digit display :)

These are the best sounds I've heard from the Prophet 5. Have you played the Prophet 6? I've heard some comparisons where they almost sound identical but there are sounds here that I haven't really heard from the Prophet 6...P5 seems to be smoother, darker and less brassy, and maybe more capable of glassy tones?
@infestedalien3 жыл бұрын
I've a prophet 6 and is planning to buy a prophet 5 just because I love the look of it and always wanted one since a long time ago. However! My analyze is that prophet 5 poly-mod can set a way higher amount value compared to prophet 6. Anohther thing is that if you press the same key repeated times on a prophet 6 it activates another voice rather than retrigger it like the prophet 5 (not 100% if this is true but seems like this when looking at other youtube videos). Another thing is that Prophet 5 max open low pass cutoff will stay around 8khz unless you activate filter keyboard-tracking and or the filter envelope amount which tend to extend the cutoff range. Also to my ears the filters sounds a bit more darker in some way on the prophet 5, but yeah when people compare the P5 and P6 they can get very close in sounds. I would like to point out that I am very satisfied over the prophet 6 but also want to have a prophet 5 and it kind of hurts to know that I spend money on a synthesizer kind of similar but hey.... how many guitarist do buy many expensive guitars even if they have slighty differences? :) Just keep in mind that prophet 6 is more versatile and cost less but not as cool as a p5 :(

For me, the vintage knob on the hardware is great as I like the instabilities in analogue hardware. On the other hand, this thing is pretty expensive and You really have to want THAT sound. For what I’m doing, the software does a great (enough) job so that I personally couldn’t justify such a big expense. I get though, why people prefer this one over the vst, left aside the haptic experience. It can sound very organic. But I just prefer a different sound character (oberheim sem, Roland, Cwejman)

@@limbicbits Completly agree and also behringer will release a pro 5 soon (that's the reason why DS released again the pro 5 first). But in term of sound, did you also notice a difference in the low end frequencies and also in the high frequencies ? Can you feel more bass on the hardware ?
@limbicbits3 жыл бұрын
@@howdoesitsound4331 well, the Prophet 5 is quite heavy on the bass sound, no doubt. But then again, for me, this extra low end wouldn't justify such an expense. My guess is, that they might have too much sonic overlapping and in comparison (just based on features) Prophet 5 is quite limited. It very much depends on your sound preferences. I really liked the MFB synth pro but at the time I did the demo video it was still buggy. Novation Peak is great but a hybrid. If you don’t care too much it’s excellent for the price being asked. Maybe deepmind 12r which is also not too bad but very junoesque. If four voices are enough, maybe Elektron analog four could be an option, too.
