Sequoia sempervirens is the scientific name for the Redwood or California Redwood. This belongs to the family of the Cupresaceae.
Sequoia sempervirens is a tree that can live for more than 3,000 years, reach heights of more than 120 meters and easily reach trunk diameters of more than 25 meters. It is the tallest plant species that exists.
The Sequoia sempervirens is a slender tree with a straight, cylindrical trunk, with numerous horizontal branches that maintain a slight downward curve. Its rind is very thick, soft and spongy to the touch, of a bright reddish-brown color that darkens over time.
The multiplication of Sequoia sempervirens can be asexual by cutting, the plants obtained are identical clones with the same genomic material.
The Sequoia sempervirens begins the production of seeds from the 10 or 15 years of age. Its production is usually large, although the viability of the seed is not so much.
Each gram of seeds contains between 200 and 300 units. Each of them presents a kind of wings on its periphery to facilitate its dispersal.
Sequoia sempervirens has its natural habitat in the mountainous systems of the western United States, exactly from southern Oregon to central California, where it is found in both flat and humid coastal foothills. It likes to grow in a group, sheltering from strong winds and frost.
In Europe it was introduced in 1843 and although it has been thought of as a forest tree, it currently has a basically ornamental role in parks and gardens.
In Spain, the unique Sequoia grove in Cantabria stands out for its patrimonial and landscape value. This space is called Secuoyas del Monte Cabezón and was declared a Natural Monument by Decree 41/2003 of the Government of Cantabria, and included in the Network of Protected Natural Spaces of Cantabria by Law of Cantabria 4/2006, of May 19, of Nature Conservation.
The tallest Redwood appears to be found in Redwood National Park, north of San Francisco, California.
