These are all canon and as we have seen, Alicent had a nervous disorder in the first episodes, ruining her nails and fingers, each time her father asked to go to the king. SHE CLEARLY DID NOT WANT THAT. unless you're the type who rapes someone because you thought they wanted it, you'd understand that SHE CLEARLY was uncomfortable. the man was her father's age. that being said, she still tried to do her duty and task because of her father, AND she didn't manipulate him. so far all of the advices she's given to him have been fair. she has been the purest person on the show so far. clearly George wanted us to understand her more, because in Fire and blood, she's the big villain. The ending montage was probably my favorite scene of the series so far. Give me the aesthetics of the red hue of the weirdwood tree glowing in twilight, give me those flickering lights, give me the gloomy ambience of a GoT wedding with a equally gloomy soundtrack & it’s A1! The slightly overlooked heartfelt exchange Otto & Alicent had at the beginning was the most significant moment of the episode imo, other than Viserys. It's the Tywin Jaime "we can establish a dynasty that last a thousand years" moment. The wedding sets up the first chess pieces for Dance of Dragons. Rhaenyra and Laenor were being told their wedding vows, but it was Alicent and Criston who were getting married.

Imagine thinking the princess and heir to the throne would abandon her life and duties to run away with a one night stand? Just so he could restore his own honour, Criston blew me this episode, completely entitled and pathetic.

@@Radonatorr Agreed. She spent the first few episodes telling both Alicent and Cristan how much she wanted to leave it all behind and travel the world eating cake. And Cristan isn't in the position to be someone's side-piece either. He's a knight of the kingsguard and honour means more to them than anything else. Rhanaeyra was pretty entitled to assume that Cristan would be ok to essentially be her whore. At the same time, Cristan is the first to ascend to the position he is in from his family. So, he thinks he's soiled his entire family name. Asking her to leave with him, is, in his eyes, the only honourable thing to do. It's an escape for both of them. If not, he has to spend his whole life hiding this secret. I think he honestly wanted to get caught, because he felt so guilty about it. His actions aren't justified, but his unraveling makes sense. Can't believe people don't understand how complex his situation is. It's a little Shakespearean. Manly man with strict moral compass completely unravels because of one mistake that eats at his conscience.

It's surprising how people don't understand why Criston is so upset. Rhaenyra seduced him and because he's her servant, saying no could have ended badly for him, so he didn't really have a choice. Proposing to her was a last ditch effort to regain his honor and save his life. Her wanting him to be her paramour is literally putting his life at risk, of course he's angry.

@Marcin Hasulak Why do people keep saying he couldn't refuse? throughout the season they've built up that friendship as a truthful one, he was her confidant at one point, it's shown time and time again that when it's just the two of them he can speak to her freely. So why are people pushing this idea that he couldn't refuse? Why would Criston or the audience think that this virgin girl who's been an honest friend to him would call for his head because he rejected her advances? You guys just making 💩up. Criston was hesitant because he didn't want to dishonour the oath he made as kingsguard but he did it anyway. Then after the fact expected the princess to abandon her family and duties to run away with him, to restore something that he gave away? It wasn't a mistake on his part because it only took about an hour to get all that armour off, plenty of time to change his mind. Criston isn't some innocent loveatruck, he's entitled and emotionally unstable. That scene on the boat when he was yelling at her I know the princess was thinking "oh no, I've made a big mistake sleeping with this one, he's off his rockers" 😂😂

I guess many don't understand the value of the oath that he took and what it meant for him. Criston Cole didn't want to be with Rheanyra that night..but he got wrapped up in the power dynamics and also believed that there could still be something honorable with this..with the prospect of finding love and subsequent marrige with her, he could maybe justify his lapse. He was already in major guilt. But, after being reduced to only being a side piece for the queen's fun and seeing the value of his oath-breaking being reduced down into the ground..he was filled with so much guilt, remorse and anger. That is why his identification as a whore by Joffrey instead of being given the respect of an honorable Kingsguard during their first interaction really pushed him over the edge Brilliant writing and it's good to see characters who hold their virtues, values and morals larger than life itself. Very rare these days.

Same I agree. They literally explain why he feels the way he feels and still people think he should accept a role a whore for Rhaenyra. Obviously his honour actually means something to him, something no one in todays age seems to understand. It doesn’t matter if they think he’s a pretty face in a show or want him to be a whore. He’s a knight and an oath actually means something to people that take it.

I agree. Even if vows of celibacy (which incidentally still exist today in some religious circles) do not appeal to jaded, modern sensibilities, why is it so difficult to grasp the value of keeping a promise, or being true to your word? And why is it so difficult to sympathise with those who fall short of this ideal and suffer pangs of conscience? Has no one ever faced a situation where they reneged on a promise (willingly or not) and regretted it? Criston suffered a moment of weakness that haunts him, which is all the more agonising because, as he says, his honour and integrity are the only meaningful possessions to his name- he has no property, no highborn lineage, and no noble title. None of the trappings with which his world measures one’s value. Only the strength of his word. How does one live with the loss of the very thing that gives one meaning and purpose? One other layer to consider: was he really in a position to refuse the advances of the heir to the throne? Can one give full consent when there is such a power differential? It is likely that, deep down, part of Criston resents being maneuvered into a no-win situation by Rhaenyra, further complicating his feelings of shame. The very person he was sworn to protect also contributed to his dishonour. And members of the audience just shrug their shoulders, regard each other with incredulity, and make disparaging comments, as if they cannot fathom how guilt can drive a person to give themselves up to judgement. Or understand why Criston may have begun to lose his will to live. It is indeed a breakdown in empathy.
