Umr ka lamba safar tai kiya tanha hamne …… what a masterpiece of a line …… fun fact the head of Urdu at Aligarh university wrote the lyrics for this film. He refused to do any others, he was a personal friend of muzzafar Ali. That’s why he did only umrao jaan.

It’s a famously believed to be an actual incident and simultaneously considered just another urban folklore of the time that “ umrao Jan Ada the famous songstress dancer and Amateur poetess was able to save her life and fled to to Bombay. She even married one of her benefactors, who was a financially stable businessman of Mumbai and after the Ghadar and 1857 fiasco, Mirza Hadi Ruswa actually got a chance to meet her in a hotel lobby in Bombay where she narrated her entire story or her aap biti to him. And even showed remorse how she was never able to return or even visit her parent’s home”. It is believed that this is how mirza the reputed novelist added the twist in the original story and when he asked for some newly composed poetry she said this entire poem/ now a song to him. It was even published in the end of the original edition but got edited out later over the decades and editions of publishing 😄.
