But best recommend to have separate tanks for male Beta fish and not putting them in the same tank together as they are notorious for fighting against each other resulting in one of them to be instantly killed.

Other things you should know about the care: -you should only keep them alone(there are exceptions, do your research) -always cycle the tank and learn about the nitrate cycle -feed variety of foods such as flakes or frozen foods -long fin bettas often have trouble swimming, you might cosider getting a female or a short finned betta -for plantet tanks you need your light on a timer for 8 hours, and a nutrient sibstrate like aquasoil -you should get a water test kit for ammonia nitrate and nitrite -plants have other benefits, they filter the water from waste and oxygenate it -if you get a bigger tank like 10/15 gallons and have lots of plants and floaters you wont have to do as much maintenance like gravel vaccing and water changes Bettas are great hardy fish and they need a lot more than bowls or vases to thrive

If your aquarium is aerated, they won't need to breathe from the water surface for oxygen. The aerated water will have plenty of oxygen for them to breathe.
@courtneyspenguinАй бұрын
Fun fact, betas have a labyrinth organ. It allows them to breathe atmospheric air. Even with adequate aeration, they’ll choose to breathe at the surface. You see Cory cats do the same, although they lack the organ. It’s just something they can do, so they do it. Beta fry need to be kept at a specific humidity in order to develop the labyrinth organ at all. Bonus fact: gouramis also have the labyrinth organ and build bubble nests

No. They only fight conspecifics or other highly territorial/aggressive fish. They will fight gouramis (because they are closely related), and aggressive cichlids. They are however usually fine with various schooling fish, live bearers and various small catfish and loaches.
@courtneyspenguinАй бұрын
@@weasel9062I would dispute livebearers as tank mates. Depending on the finage of the beta, guppies can get a bit overly curious in my experience. I have seen guppies strip axolotl gill frill down to the stalk. Yes fill frill are a different type of tissue to finage, but between the drag caused by large fins , typically smaller , under developed tanks, and guppies being guppies, I would strongly caution. But the store I work at has a dumbo female in with the yellow and blue rams in a 20 gallon. It’s a normal store tank with little decor/scape, but no seems to even notice her in there which I think is cool lol

I got one for my birthday last year and it only survived for 6 months. Its name was BluGlo and i took care of it by changing its water and frequently checking its PH levels and even put a temperature checker for its water tank inside. Everyday i check on him to see if he was okay and he likes to hide so i thought he was just hiding somewhere so i didnt freak out at the time but i checked again the next day and i still couldnt find him still. I found him dead and dismembered under the filter, i didnt have the balls to clean it or even look at him so i put a blanket over his dead body for days. I didnt even want to think about it. My boyfriend cleaned it for me after a week because we didnt know what to do. Now he's with me in a little flower pot with soil...

Some that do seem to be more healthy are the deltas and super deltas, round tails, spade tails, and of course, plakats (we love plakats)

Most of this info is good, but the video example clips are showing A LOT of rimless tanks without lids (seeing those gives me anxiety because a LOT of bettas have lost their lives jumping out of such tanks by accident)... some with the water filled quite near the top of the rim such that there would not be enough of a glass barrier to keep a betta safely contained if it were to jump. KEEP A LID ON YOUR BETTA TANKS, or find another way to ensure they can't accidently jump out (fine mesh netting can work in cases where a lid is not possible). Also you didn't mention the importance of having a heater (they need tropical water temperatures and preferably the temperature should be kept relatively stable without large or frequent fluctuations). Only time a heater may not be necessary is if the water can remain at their ideal temperature ranges such as for someone living in a tropical region/countries where bettas originate from or similar.

Remember folks, these "fighting" fish are only bred for ornamental purposes. The can't swim properly because of those long exagerated fins...... It is like breeding horses with extreme short legs because you think it looks cool. Those exagerated looking fish wouldn't survive a day in the wild with those fins and colours. Wouldn't survive in a fight with a 'real' Betta ( Plakat Thai) or a wild caught Betta.....

I kept mine in a 10 gallon tank years ago, and yes, he'd jump out. This happened more often if, say, a fly got in the house and flew over the tank, so I had to keep a lid on the tank. In fact I taught my betta fish to jump out of the water for pellets. It was a fun trick. I also had a female who jumped out, and even though I didn't find her right away, she survived. I have no idea if she was out for a minute or an hour, but the fact that they can breathe air meant she didn't suffocate and recovered pretty fast after being returned to the tank. They're extremely hardy. But yeah... make sure you've got a lid for the tank, because even if the conditions are good and you've never seen them do it before, they may still find a reason to jump.
