So she asked a workers if it was okay to put them together. He promised it was. Like a few days later...I wake up, get out of bed and go to check on my little friends. My little frog gutted my Beta. I love this. Bettas definitely deserve to live a nice life in a large tank with lots of room to swim just as any fish should. The only down side is when you “rescue” a Betta from a tiny cup in a pet store it only tells the store they should keep ordering more. The Betta trade is a very sad one. I’ve worked at pet stores and have seen how they get shipped. In teeny tiny little squared bags barely bigger than themselves with barely enough water to cover them and no room to swim. Sometimes no water and they’re already dead. I’m talking like barely 3”x 3” sealed bag. Of course most are already in very poor condition then they get placed into that tiny bowl and if they’re lucky they maybe get their water changed once a week. I wish more people could see how they are treated in the pet fish industry and could invoke changes. They deserve much better, they really do make for a nice pet and become very personable, as much as a fish can I suppose. Bettas have always been one of my favorite pet fish, and yes I have owned a few over the years.

I agree. and for those who wonder how to have a pet Betta without feeding into this... it's usually the big chains that do this the worst, soo check out your local fish shops (or locally owned pet shops with a big and well kept fish section). they're more likely to keep them in with other stock in tanks where they're compatible, or have a glass jar/sump system. or you can check out online shops of enthusiasts who started breeding for the love of the species. I used to buy small batches of babies from an enthusiast breeder and raise them up in my shrimp tanks to sell them online. people are sometimes stupefied you could ship a fish to an online buyer, but it's usually better conditions and a way shorter trip than the ones in the big box stores get-- they're almost always imported from south Asian fish farms.
@wolfygrl24Ай бұрын
@@nivisionI agree with your suggestions. I’ve worked at big name chain stores and also at a small single family owned store. That small family store was where I encountered the worst treatment of the Bettas. The very tiny bags with almost no water to cover them for shipping, and yes they were coming from far away, not local. The owner took park in opening the tiny bags and placing them in tiny bowls but didn’t seem fazed by how they were shipped and treated. Just kept placing more orders when stock was low. We would loose most of the Bettas to death rather than being purchased, despite the employees doing their best to care for them in their tiny bowls, was so heart breaking. The only time we put Bettas in big tanks was when they ordered way too many Bettas and didn’t have enough bowls for them so we had to place them in tanks with other fish but that only lasted until bowls were available again. Hopefully word can spread and people can learn from these mistakes and the industry can make necessary changes to do better.
@nivisionАй бұрын
@@wolfygrl24 aww, yes, not all local are educated in fish care unfortunately, people can be really ignorant on fish. only noted local because they're more often than not started by enthusiastic hobbyists who want to help instead of just push sales. if that's not the case... one has to be discerning or sometimes say something if they don't seem too defensive. the big chains have standards answers but they're prioritizing what sells and not the care-- they answer primarily to shareholders and profits, which doesn't do much in changing how we're presented these animals and what their appropriate care is. some of the "quick fix tank medicine" stuff I see in those stores would do more harm than good in most imagined scenarios, but they can't bottle advice to sell it. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir though. raising them from babies in small but yes. unheated cups in Thailand's tropical climate during the rainy season where water's getting refreshed every day? is a far cry from how these stores sell them. they like plant heavy tanks with lots of retreat space. once they feel safe and they're warm they have so much personality. people are used to seeing them just sit there but that's mostly from bad care or bad breeding of giant curtain fins.

What an amazing video! I tried to do the same experience with bettas when I was 13. I had a dark red male and a golden female. I put them together so they could "embrace", but in my case the the male betta beated the heck out of her until I took her out thinking she would die in his hands. She didn't last long, passing within a month or two later. And the red male betta contracted some kind of disease that made him white, losing his colors. I stopped petting bettas since then.
@nivisionАй бұрын
yeah, this video does kinda simplify breeding. it's really best left to extremely experienced professionals used to working with them, this is a frequent outcome. also, most times when bettas are really stressed or generally ill their colors fade, so can't really say what the disease was unfortunately.

I follow a betta-keeping Reddit and there's so many mentions of how bettas USED to live around 6-7 years, but now you're lucky if they make it to 3 years from the sheer amount of genetic diseases they have now. I hope regulations change for the health of these fish. Thank you for giving him such a wonderful home he's clearly happy in.

LOL He was my child and got anything he wanted, even two leaf hammock beds to lounge on. I loved all his bubble nests. In 2020, he grew a lump at the tender age of 5 years old. We got a fish doctor who came in the middle of the pandemic to perform an operation in the middle of our dining room. Our sweet little boy fought the anesthesia lol. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do in way of a cure. Only medicine to help numb the pain and keep his environment clean, so he could be as comfortable as possible. The doctor was amazed at our dedication to our little one, he took care of farm fish, and when fish-parents contact him he tries to help. Angler fought until the very end, puffing and huffing, but snuggling the glass when I was near. He was old enough to develop cancer...I miss him everyday. My sweet little boy swimming in the eternal sea. I love you Angler 🐡 and your puffs! 💜

You saved Rocky's life! and Rocky will be forever grateful. the generations coming from him are possible thanks to your timely intervention. Unfortunately, the awful pet store for profit doest give a damn. they feel "an empathetic loser who thinks he can save a half-dead fish bought one of the ones we had set aside to throw in the toilet today". and then, they keep on buying them. Of course, you are not a loser and of course, thanks to your intervention , Rocky is not a dead fish. But I have been that person myself, buying birds to be released in ceremonial rites in south-east Asia (which will be trapped again, probably the same day) and fish in the USA pet shops, who were, indeed, beyond repair. I hope Rocky and family live happily ever after for many years to come!.

betta fish natural habitat that they evolved in were often puddles and oxygen deprived ponds, so bubble nests help provide more oxygen for the fry until they can stay near the top on their own and gulp air. Betta fish have a Labyrinth. They can breathe air. They gulp air from the surface when the water is low on oxygen. Fry labyrinth are not fully developed to breathe as easily so the bubble nest helps.

Bubbles don't add O2...it's the surface movement caused by the bubbles that allows the gas exchange to take place. The idea of bubbles adding oxygen really needs to be expelled from the hobby altogether. I do love bettas tho and for anyone that is new to betta breeding and their behaviors, this is a cute informative video. Rocket looks so much better and tho I'm glad you saved him, buying from big box stores like that just helps them continue in their quest to mistreat all sorts of animals.

I thought this was common knowledge (I am literally mentally challenged please tell me people aren't dumber than me)

So are you saying that the surface movement allows more oxygen to dissolve, is that because the ripples and whatnot create much more surface area for oxygen absorption?
@charg1nmalaz0r512 ай бұрын
i feel like you are being pedantic. The bubbles cause the movement allowing the gas exchange to take place. Hence people say the bubbles add O2 to the tank. You are just being extra technical for no reason when they infact are effectively adding the 02

God, I hate stores that put bettas in cups. I wish I could buy all of them. When I see them swimming in that dirty cup, I shed tears sometimes. This is why I *no* longer support PetSmart/Petco. I go to a store called Carson’s Tropical Fish Store in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. It’s a local business and was even open during Veteran’s day. I don’t see bettas in the store, but I’ve heard of Betta fish tanks. Although space is small, it’s way more spacious than the cups. They have mini filters, mini heaters, and isolated tanks. For females, they’re put in regular tanks with the other fish.

I have a Betta named Augusta, he actually looks very similar to Rocky. We keep him in a large tank with live plants, we also have some plastic decorations in it too. His favorite spot in the whole tank is this hollow plastic skull he enjoys hiding in. He has a ferocious appetite and is very friendly.
