2012 was by far the best ball striking and serving from Serena

Wimbledon and USO yes, but overall 2013 more consistent high level IMO (and way more titles)

Ball striking no (excluding Olympics but best serving yes best ball striking would be Wimbledon 2016)

Best movement we’d seen from her since her 2000s peak too.

@@bryanmartin5901 The comment is correct about the second half of 2012. 2013 was a better year for her but it was soley based on her confidence from 2012. 2012 was the highest form of women's tennis I have ever seen before and after.

Winning WImbledon and going into the Olympics on grass we saw her get better and better each match because she annihilated them at the Olympics. The final was peak Serena and I don't think anybody could have beat her that year. Everything was working in that gold medal match.

2012 WTA Finals is one of my favorite tournament performances by her ever. She looked extremely healthy, her wardrobe was fab, and she was moving and striking like a 2002 Serena!

It's quite interesting that players outside the top 10 were by far a bigger threat to Serena than those in the top 10 between the 2012-2015 period. She was very focused against the top players.
@bryanmartin59016 ай бұрын
Well, lower ranked players tend to be people she either has never faced or faces less often. So it isn’t that surprising. For example, Djokovic has said the first round opponents can be the trickiest bc he has rarely faced them or never.
@chanjiewan68236 ай бұрын
@@bryanmartin5901 Not only that, these lower ranked players played way above their normal levels against Serena. Therefore, any amount of prior research goes out the window. She had to figure things out on the court against practically a new player.

It happens, they bring their best too. Oftentimes against Serena is the only time they do so (as in the case of Cornet and a few others). They bring their best game ever, only to lose to the next player, rarely winning the championship.
@ak-xp4hp5 ай бұрын
@theire483 I used to keep track of players and how they would do after beating serena in GSs. I think from 2012 until 2020 the only players to beat her at a GS and not lose the very next match was Garbine at the 2014 FO and Sabine at 2013 W. Of course this doesn't include losses from Serena in Gramd Slam Finals

@@ak-xp4hp Very interesting. Beating Serena Williams was the fastest way to become famous, especially in slams. They were so motivated to beat her.

Yet she lost pretty badly at AO and French open. Serena had the tendency to underestimate her opponents. Especially,if she already beat them before. She was only focused against Sharapova.

Sam Stosur is proof that merely having muscles does not make you a great champion. Serena worked hard to compliment her own strength, and was more than just fitness, but also knew what do with her fitness.

Wasn't 2012 the year when Serena was humiliated by Razzano in the first round of the FO and destroyed by Makarova with 26 36 in the 4th round at the AO? Serena was so much better in 2002/03 - and that against stronger competition. Her many slams in the 2010s can be attributed to the clown competition in that dark age.
