A perfect tennis player doesn't lose to Likhovtseva, Craybas, Srebotnik, Makarova, Razzano, Cornet, Vinci in slams. Serena did all that in 2000-15 so I don't even have to mention 1998/99 and post-2015. Especially her mentality was a weakness. When she lost the first set of a slam final you usually knew that she was toast. And her implosion at the threshold of a Grand Slam at the USO 2015 is legendary.

I get surprised when people attribute her success to just power. Most players in the 21st century are powerful. Madison Keys and Lindsay Davenport were more powerful. Players like Venus, Petra Kvitova were as powerful. Players like Sharapova and Sabalenka can match the power of her ground strokes. Prime Venus and Sabine Lisciki could hit bigger serves than her. Serena has power, speed, incredible angles, drive/swing volleys and one of the best over head smash in the game. Her volleys were good in the 90s and 2000s, it declined a bit in the 2010s. Power alone won't win you 23 slams in this era where most players can hit hard. She could also use effective slices, drop shots and terrific lobs.
@nhlanhlamakhanya2285Ай бұрын
Finally somebody who gets it. Serena has never really been the most powerful. Venus and Lindsay in their prime hit harder.

Don't think so, with only 73 of 240 tournaments won. Court, Navratilova, Graf are one league above her.
@theire483Ай бұрын
she got it right. Some of the greatest tennis players both male and female have said exactly the same. They never base the greatest player(s) on the amount of tournaments won. They base it on overall play. what they do is take a category and say, who has the best serve: Serena Who has the best return: Serena etc. When they put all the categories together Serena comes out on top. If it were solely based on tournaments won. It would most definitely be Court by 1. If you did it that way you would have to take into account: how many tournaments one played, how many opponents did they have to play. How many players were in the tournament. Was it in the open era. There are so many more variables, that's why they don't do it that way.
@carrerau7138Ай бұрын
@@theire483 For most non-American fans and experts Serena does NOT come out on top. Serena's considerably lower tournament winning percentage (only 30 %) can't be excused by better competition. Yes, the field was very strong as long as Seles, Hingis, Capriati, Davenport, Clisters, Henin were in the mix. But most of them were gone around the mid-00s. And until then Serena had won "only" 7 of her 23 slams. Especially from 2009 on the level of the field sunk considerably. Players like Safina, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Kerber rose to #1. Which would not have been possible in the 80s or 90s or early 00s. And only THEN Serena (who turned 28 already in 2009) really started to accumulate slams in record numbers.
@theire483Ай бұрын
@@carrerau7138 if you go by what most fans think, be they USAMERICAN or otherwise, they tend to bring in their prejudices (especially when it comes to Serena). Read most comments on videos of her someone (many) are going to be against her. That is why we would turn to those who (supposedly) look more categorically. I have listened to Evert, Davenport, McEnroe's (and others) say that Serena is the greatest female tennis player ever (for now). They do it by category not wins only. Of course they are looking at overall play. We could do the same with basketball players. Most will say Jordan is the greatest. They base it on not just because his team won six championships. They will say things like: how many points he scored, can he play at this position, that position, can he make he shot, is he a go to player, how high can he jump, can he rebound. Or is he just there to rebound etc. Then they tally it up, they may say something like, Michael Jordan is the greatest because he has no weaknesses. That's what I heard some other great tennis players say. They were talking about several players. They say, yes Graf was a great player, but. Here's the but, they said, if you could MANAGE (key words) to stay away from her forehand, you had a chance. The same players (who had played both) said, I don't care where you put that ball with Serena on the opposite side of the net, it is dangerous.

@@theire483 Evert (USA), Davenport (USA), McEnroe (USA) have claimed that Serena Williams (USA) is the greatest ever? Evert (USA) and McEnroe (USA) who get paid millions by US TV stations to promote women's tennis to US consumers? Well, Davenport (USA) had this to say about Steffi Graf not so long ago: “She was the greatest champion I ever played against. …. What if she had kept playing? She would have won a lot more slams titles in my opinion.“ (Lindsay Davenport, Tennis Channel USA, March 2020) Now we will have to ask Becker (Germany), Stich (Germany), Kerber (Germany) who the greatest ever was....
