@SanphireJaide72 жыл бұрын
@@GottdieEhre Yes, Steffi was in many respects the GOAT. I was a huge fan of hers. It's simply my view (and that of many) that SW at her absolute best was the best ever. Of course, she wasn't always at her best, whereas Steffi always played at a consistently superb level.
@onestage1462 жыл бұрын
Pretty much agree with everything you said. Her best is the closest I've seen to mens tennis, it's just unbelievable, and she completely changed the way that womens tennis is played now. The GOAT for me for more reasons that just the slam record and olympic record, but steffi is close too and probably doesnt get enough recognition nowadays in my opinion.
@onestage1462 жыл бұрын
@@carrerau7138 I know so, yes. Not to generalise, but from my experience as tennis coaches we emphasise the importance of the 1-2 serve and next shot, as well as returning much more now. It's not necessarily the direction that I wished for tennis to go, but that's what we learned from her. Shes produced the highest level that we've ever seen, so a lot (but not all) is modelled around her. On the men's side, it seems djokovic is replicated the most. They used to not even record data for aces in womens tennis, now it's expected to hit a handful of them per match. There were others like venus and davenport, but Serena's is the best ever, and if we can get anywhere near her serving technique/toss, then we're delighted. There are some parts of her game that we don't replicate, some players arent strong enough to consistently hit open stance backhand winners (and I just dont like the technique personally), we also don't teach her amazing angles as much as we should to be honest. Sorry for rambling but you get the picture Re. recognition I was talking more about the views of professionals and ex-professionals. In the past few years I've heard it from the top of my head Andy Murray, Evert, Rusedski, Coric, Badosa, Tomljanovic, Gauff; djokovic saying "She’s the greatest female athlete of all time, and she keeps on coming back and inspiring everyone," just before serena even reached 23 caught me off guard. I've taught in london, loughborough, and a little bit in antwerp, so my colleagues and students over the years have been around 60% british, 40% international. on the mens side I hear several names but even with students on the womens side it's almost always serena. To be fair Ive had a german student who idolises graf, but still says serena is the goat bias aside, and she doesnt play like graf at all. Kind of like the person who I was responding to, which is why I replied since it reminded me of a conversation I had that day. So im not sure if you're american or european but from my experience in Europe (plus the handful of asian students I've had) its still overwhelmingly serena, and whilst I do reluctantly agree, the nostalgic side of me hurts a bit. The American viewer polls that I've seen are dominated by serena but that's to be expected. And as time passes and the younger generation keeps growing, I fear that graf will be recognised less, especially among the casual general public who only know the big 3+serena since they probably transcend the sport more than any generation has.
@onestage1462 жыл бұрын
@@carrerau7138 Goodness, where to begin. Will try not to make it too long. As you said she was just unplayable for the whole week in London, but it's not the norm to play that well for pretty much the entirety of a week. Usually you have ups and downs and changes of momentum throughout the tournament, ideally peaking towards the end of the week. So it's not so much *entire tournaments* that I highlight to students/colleagues to show her greatness, but rather individual matches. I should also preface by saying that, yes there are many matches where she has been pretty much unplayable, but those aren't usually the matches that I analyse the most - when she plays at the highest level of tennis, she ends points very quickly, and I'd rather show videos that teach them how to construct points meticulously. So for her best performances, a couple examples that I recall recommending are the AO2007 final, RG2013 semifinal, and WB2016 semifinal. I have a brother-sister pair to whom I recommended they re-watch WB2019 Round 2 mixed doubles too, but that was less educational and more for inspiration - I'm not a fan of her two handed volleys anyway, her drive volleys and overheads are of course world class though. However, as I said my philosophy is that I'd rather show videos where she was really tested and forced to construct the points and open up space. Admittedly, I have colleagues who do the complete opposite, because yes you do want to see the goat at her unplayable best, but after a while I don't think you learn too much from watching ace after ace, return winner after return winner. So my style is to recommend some of her tight wins against opponents who have a contrasting playstyle. Those matches force her to rally more patiently, use her phenomenal angles to open up the court, and even come to the net every now and then. I've personally reviewed the USO13 and USO2012 finals and WB2015 QF against Azarenka a nauseating amount of times. Those two players on the same court cover a heap of important aspects of tennis (for slices I'll still take Graf or Barty any day haha) Today during our break we went over some clips (mostly the last few games) of Serena's Miami 2015 semifinal (the final that year is another one-sided match, but as I said it's not really my style to show those). She's the best ever and the best to learn from, and my students want to learn from her so I wouldnt have much choice anyway, but I hope this ramble makes sense.
@onestage1462 жыл бұрын
@@carrerau7138 Hang on, I'm obviously happy to talk about this, but it will have to remain cordial. I'm afraid I'm not as 'young' as I might like to be. Reading between the lines, I'm inferring that you think her opponents in these matches stood very little chance because Serena's toolkit neutralises their games. And that's correct. That's why even though she played unplayable tennis in those matches, I personally prefer showing matches where she has to problem solve more. Demolishing your biggest rival doesn't necessarily equate to your best performance. The men's RG final in 2008 isnt a go-to match of mine, regardless of the fact that one played far better than the other. There are of course matches against better players where she also dominated like the Miami 2008 QF, but I don't think you can learn as much from those matches, that isnt her A-game in my eyes. When I decide whether a match produces some of the best tennis, my decision isn't solely based on the scoreboard or the stature of the opposition. If I did that, I wouldn't be doing my job properly. If you have any more questions then let me know.

And the 2010 final against Henin I didnt know she was hampered by so many injuries and to take home singles and doubles titles in a grand slam is difficult enough even if you weren't hampered by injuries. The year of 2013 Serena DOMINATED on Clay. Up to that point, Serena had won 3 clay court titles leading into the French Open. Three observations that always stand out IMO when I watch these highlights are: 1. how biased the commentators were against Serena who had a tendency to be more vocal in their commentary when she was down in the match but then get quiet when she was winning (especially in the Sharapova matches); 2. thanks to the infamous 2004 QF USO match against Capriati, Hawk-Eye debuted in the spring of 2005 and was a key factor in the outcome of some of Serena’s matches (except in the FO); 3. how folks keep moving the goalposts when measuring Serena’s GOAT status and not fully appreciating her accomplishments - especially the two “Serena Slams”.

That 2007 AO match against Sharapova is her best match period. Better than the FO Mauresmo match, better than the 12 Olympic Final, better than the 2013 Miami SF against Aga (which is an undderrated match imo) Serena was doing EVERYTHING right in the Aussie Final: the net, the serve, the return, the movement, the tactics. At the Olympics, her serve dominated and in Paris everything was clicking much like the Aussie final, she just was a bit more dialed in in Australia. Her tactical mind was on display against Aga. I don't think people understand how lucky Sharapova was to beat Serena at the 2004 Wimbledon Championships. In essence, Sharapova had never played a healthy Serena. In 2004, Serena had just come back from a long break after having surgery and she came back too fast and somewhat injured herself at the French. She was NOT supposed to make it to the finals at Wimbledon and she pretty much was supposed to lose to Mauresmo in the semis, but she conjured up some type of Witchcraft and made it past Mauresmo. In the finals, she was not herself and not playing well. She lost. At the YEC that year she was beating Sharapova until she tore a stomach muscle. She was serving serves at 30 mph and could barely hit the ball. However, she was still winning the match using angles and off-speed balls...that's how good she is. Sharapova was so frustrated losing to an injured Serena. However, fatigue and pain set in and she couldn't fight any longer. The media gave Sharapova a false sense of invincibility against Serena and it didn't help that Serena hadn't been her best after her sister had been murdered. They hyped and hyped Sharapova. But Sharapova soon learned that Serena was not to be messed with hahaha and she and her fans learned it for YEARS. I thought about how distraught Sharapova fans must have been for YEARS when their fave would meet Serena knowing what the outcome would be. That would have driven me nuts. They hated Serena for years but to no avail. Sharapova banned her own father from attending her matches after he told her that he feared Serena for her and that she got lucky by beating Serena. Michael Joyce, Sharapova's old coach, revealed that this happened. I absolutely loved watching Serena play tennis and no longer watch women's tennis because there are no players who bring the type of playing that she does. She is an amazing Goddess.

I don't know why the 2005 Aus Open SF between Williams & Sharapova isn't in her top5 matches, I heard her speak about that after the 2015 Aus Open win against Sharapova.....she had lost the last 2 matches going into that 2005 SF to Sharapova and was outplayed for a set and a half and had match points saved she had said that match was huge moment in her career.....

Look how serious Serena was in the last match. Playing for the USA in the Olympics. A title she certainly must have felt was her destiny to win! Pure destruction in the final. Serena with her best-ever mental game on display as well as her tennis skills and physical dominance.

Wow. Thanks for this. I’ve been in bed with covid and your vids helped pass a lot of time, and very entertaining. I agree, Serena is the GOAT, next would be Monica, Steffy, Navratilova, Hingis, Venus, but not in that order.

Serena Williams vs. Steffi Graf - by the numbers GRAND SLAM SINGLES TITLES/GRAND SLAMS PLAYED: Serena 23/81 (28%) Steffi 22/54 (40.7%) # of Seasons to Achieve Slam Total (Years Between 1st and Final Major Win): Serena 19 Steffi 13 SINGLES TITLES/TOURNAMENTS PLAYED: Serena 74/235 (31.5%) Steffi 107/223 (48%) WEEKS RANKED # 1: Serena 319 (3rd all-time) Steffi 377 (1st all-time) CAREER SINGLES RECORD: Serena 836-147 (85 %) Steffi 902-115 (88.7 %) RECORD vs. PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN RANKED IN THE TOP 10: Serena 427-177 (78%) Steffi 452-91 (83%) # of Seasons in which player ended season at #1: Serena 5 (retired at age 40) Steffi 8 (retired at age 30) Both have won Olympic gold Both have won the Grand Slam Graf is the only player to win EACH MAJOR four times or more. This possibly suggests that Graf had greater versatility across different surfaces. On the other hand, Serena has a far more impressive record in doubles. So, why is the greatest player of all time argument so incredibly one-sided in Serena's favor? Are fans and analysts prisoners of recency bias? Is it because one of the players is American and the other was a foreigner? One might argue that Steffi would have won fewer titles if Monica Seles had not been stabbed. However, I would also suggest that if Venus Williams had not suffered from Sjogren's Syndrome, a serious fatigue disorder, in the prime of her career, she would have taken a few of Serena's grand slams. There is absolutely no doubting the cultural significance of Serena Williams as an American icon and as an inspiration to all female athletes and people of color. She should obviously be considered as a leading candidate in the GOAT discussion; however, I am truly baffled that Graf is not even in the conversation when you look at the numbers.

Being the Greatest Of All Time is not purely a numbers game. On singles stats alone , Stefi definitely comes out on top but Serena changed women’s tennis as well as impacting the game like no one else in top of her doubles achievements.
@saki5073 Жыл бұрын
@@T.C556 I completely agree with you. I just feel that Steffi Graf and perhaps a few others are in the discussion as opposed to it being an open-and-shut case that Serena is the GOAT indisputably. One could also make a strong case for Martina since she is the best female doubles player who ever lived on top of her incredible singles record.

The AUS 2005 semi finals against Maria, for me is her biggest win. Esp after having lost the 2 previous matches against her. It def was the turning point to their rivalry.

Thank you for your appreciation of the Queen of tennis Serena Williams the GOAT. Many people will regret why they did not take time to watch live including sponsors/media who did not appreciate her because there gonna be noone like any time soon. Now that the sponsors saw the lost an opportunity with Serena they chasing any person of colour trying to regain some honour now they are with Osaka before it was Sloane Stephens, it is to early to know if Osaka can go the distance or will just other overrated player.

what's incredible about the henin rivalry is Serena was only a few months older than her but turned pro 4 years before and henin retired in 2011. Henin was a great player, won multiple grand slams herself but it just speaks to Serenas dominance and longevity
