As a (massive) Graf fan it still saddens me to see Seles not really be given her due by the wider sporting and even tennis public. I feel she's too often forgotten. Along with Graf, Serena and Evert she was THE toughest mentally to ever step on the court and out of those four possibly the most fearless. She's too lionised by her own fanatics (who talk about 30+ slams as if it was a given without the stabbing) and forgotten by the rest. Her legacy isn't fully appreciated and I'd like to see that rectified. We can never know what 'may have been' but despite what we, and she, lost there is an ENORMOUS amount that should be remembered and celebrated.
@minavamp52288 жыл бұрын
+Inediblehulk but one thing for sure that everybody can agree on, graf would not have 22 slams if it wasn't for the stabbing. graf probably would end up somewhere between 15 to 18 grand slams.
@JamaalABivens8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I hate that she is severely overlooked when she was pretty much THE tennis player to beat between say, '91 and early '93. I hate to try to guess "what could have been" but that's all one can think of in regards to that particular part of her career. While she was still pretty much a top-ten player for the rest of her career, I'd like to see her mentioned more in the annals of history for her sheer awesomeness before her injury. I think what sucks even more is that a certain rival of hers was so against her having a protected ranking when she returned to the sport. Venting aside, she easily one of my top three favorite players to watch of all time.
@stevie69ful8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, she's forgotten for the same reason Graf is remembered & celebrated, because of Seles' stabbing. Yes, we'll never really know what Monica would've or could've accomplished but we know about the 22 Grand Slams Graf won largely because of Seles' absence from the game due to her being stabbed. Seles beat Graf at the 1993 Aussie Open then she got stabbed & Graf won the 1993 French Open, Wimbledon & US Open, the 1994 Aussie Open, 1995 French Open & Wimbledon and Monica returned to the tour to compete vs Graf at the 1995 US Open Finals but lost. At least 6 Grand Slams were won by Graf that Seles could have won if she were not stabbed. Steffi Graf would still have been a legend just like Monica Seles but she would not have 22 Grand Slams in her trophy case. Had Monica Seles never been stabbed both she & Steffi Graf probably would have won 15 or 16 Grand Slams.
@Ineddiblehulk8 жыл бұрын
+stevie69ful I prefer to think they would've gone closer to 18/19 each. Perhaps done a Fed and Nadal and just won EVERYTHING between them for a few years. Had they both stayed fit I do think there's every reason to assume ASV, Pierce, Hingis,Novotna and Majoli wouldn't have won any of the slams they got bewteen '94 and '98. This is obviously an 'alternate timeline' kind of deal and maybe Graf wouldn't have been injured in 97 and 98 so while she may not have won the 10 slams she got in 94-96 she may have perhaps won more in that 97,98,99 period. Seles would've kept going strong too. Who knows. All I know is we missed some GREAT matches. THeir 92 FO and 93 AO (argh both to Seles in an arm-wrestle!) were taking women's tennis to new levels.
@olaraay8 жыл бұрын
+Inediblehulk no1 should ever forget the tragedy that happened to Seles. She was dominating the slams and got stopped by a term you use for the seles fans, a fanatic. just think about it- Novak is winning the slams now and then someone stabs him so federer or nadal can win more slams. ITS JUST NOT RIGHT Now who is to say seles would have won more slams but I could bet my house that she would have won more in 1993 at least.

What a sensational match! I really miss tennis like this. Absolute hell for leather full throttle lights out tennis: just look at the reaction of the crowd - they were buzzing. You can even here Jo Jurie, the female voice, saying that it was one of the best matches she had seen in her life. This kind of tennis is inspirational. It's true, as one person noted, that Seles really was the mother of the power-hitting off both wings, Serena and Venus, in my opinion, her natural successors who took her inspiration to greater heights. The influence Seles had on the game was transformational: even on the men's game too, because of her power, passion, focus and fearlessness. Those are qualities that anyone can look up to in life, and it's what Seles will always be remembered for.

I don't think Seles is forgotten. Everybody knows her, people know how good she was, the whole world knows that both, Seles' and Graf's career would have gone a different route without the stabbing. The one who's really forgotten is Margaret Court. Even now, with Williams getting closer to the ultimate number of GS wins, they talk about Graf and Williams, never about Court - who's got the record. By the way, I don't think Seles would have surpassed Court's record, I think she would have retired before. However she would have more than Graf.

Finally, someone I can agree with, one this topic. Steffi Graf was a good player in her own right, however if Monica Seles didn't get stabbed in the Hamburg tournament back in 1993. She could have won multiple majors. Even up to 20, the girl was to bad in the early 90's.

Court is underrated for the same reason Navratilova is so ovverrated. Navratilova being a lesbian is overrated and overpraised simply for being a lesbian. These days people are obsessively in love with the LGBT community and inflate them and treat them with kid gloves compared to the straights. Court daring to stand up for her religious beliefs which are perfectly within her rights and daring to be against the gays is hated and purposely underrated just for that.

@mikeg83755 жыл бұрын
That loss is still one that makes me scratch my head to this day. Monica came into the US Open that year playing some of the best stuff we had seen from her in quite some time. She beat Hingis twice and Capriati and then beat Serena in La before losing in this match, and clearly she was playing really well. Then she crashes out to a player few had even heard of... hard to understand.

I like this Serena more. She's more dynamic. SHe's become so ruthlessly efficient in last few years (and good for her!) that she's not as much fun to watch...
@JamaalABivens8 жыл бұрын
Her agility was bananas back then and I think her court positioning was a bit better, as well. She was more willing back then to run a ball down which had us all on the edge of the seat when she played. Lol.

Yeah it was just a bit more athletic and dynamic. But that's also the differnce between a 20 year old and a 35 year old.

Yeah & top tennis players have to be efficient especially if they want to win big matches, titles & Grand Slams. I'd love to see Serena play more high risk tennis but she'd probably lose more matches than win. After Serena won her 1st Slam at the 1999 US Open, she continued playing her high risk game but she didn't win her 2nd Slam until the 2002 French Open. She played in her 2nd Slam final at the 2001 US Open vs her sister & said she was disappointed that she hadn't won more Grand Slams after her 1st win. She was disappointed & she also said she expected much more from herself. And she's right. She made the adjustments. She made the corrections in her game & she just stopped making unnecessary errors. Serena was the 1st Williams sister to win a Grand Slam but by the time Serena played vs Venus at the 2001 US Open, (& Serena's 2nd Slam final) Venus had already won 3 Grand Slam Finals & was playing in her 5th.

+Inediblehulk I agree , she was fun to watch using that athletic ability and just hitting all out. But this way lost alot of matches for her also. She started winning more when she started putting more spin on that ball and playing the percentages. If she didnt change, she would probably have fewer slams imo.

Serena would chase the Grand Slam record of Monica but a Graf fan is against the idea! A high quality match performed by the GOAT and the second GOAT!
What on Earth makes you think Seles would have won more Slams than Steffi? Steffi was always the superior athlete and Monica was unathletic and a bit one-dimensional. Not to mention the fact that she was a lost cause on grass, a surface that historically favored players with the best skills and athleticism.

Serena's serve was just plain superior. And of course Serena moved much better as well, not quite to the standard of Graf but close enough. Mobility was always Seles's weakness; her two-handed shots required just a tad longer time to set up. On clay, Seles would be much better able to handle Serena's powerful forehand, much like she was able to handle Graf's.
@Volker75786 жыл бұрын
This was a period when Seles played well and was pretty fit. Unfortunately that only happened in spring 98 and autumn 01. Great Monica Seles, even after the stabbing she had some great results, major finals, victory in Melbourne, over 20 tournament wins, beating all top players. That only goes to show how good she would have really been without that horrible attack. It ruined her BIG career. Even so - she is one of the ten greatest in women's Tennis' history.

Yes, an absolutely amazing match. Serena is so much bigger and stronger than Monica that it's amazing that Monica held her ground. Compared to Serena, Monica is just plain skinny. But Monica can sure hit those angles, with two hands on both sides! Best part - at 9:30 , when Monica is down three match points at love-40, she completely unleashes and goes all out. She was playing amazing tennis the whole match, but here she really goes for it when everything is on the line, when one small error costs her the match.

Serena does not let racists who root against her in every match she plays due to the color of her skin affect her. Her excellent papa taught her she would deal with it and to stay strong from an early age. The tennis establishment continously tried to put Serena and Venus down and keep them down, keep them passive and non winning like they like the blacks but they stayed strong an would not be differed from being champions.
