Alison was robbed of her rightful destiny to be the scariest villain ever. 😮
There was an expectation and build-up that made the audience so excited to see where Alison would go, but that was ruined by making her a shy mum in pug sweatshirts. As much as I enjoy this show, it's a shame.

I didn't know there was a "Picture of Dorian Gray" reference in the show in regards to Alison. Thats brilliant. She is so much like him as well. The picture of Dorian Gray is a story written by Oscar Wilde. It's about a young incredibly beautiful man named Dorian Gray who has a self portrait painted of him. And influenced by one other person he expresses the disaire of internal youth whising that the painting would grow old in his place. The picture becomes a representation of his soul and he gets his eternal youth. He lives a life only seeking pleasure, partly influenced by the person who made him desire eternal youth. But he goes to the extreme destroying and even killing a lot of people for his own pleasure and experiences. But for every sin he commits the painting gets ugilier, and more and more horrifying. So while everyone is looking at his pretty face and disbeliving all the rumors of all the things he did simply because he is so charming and handsome, he is left seeing his portrait get uglier and more and more horifiying every day. They look at his pretty face, he is left looking at his own disgusting soul. He seduces and sleeps whit both men and women, even his friend... Spoiler Warning: rigth before killing that friend for painting him. "That's imortality my darlings" "I only kill when we need food or when I'm bored" plus the way she was seducing Emiliy suddenly feels so Dorian Gray to me. I would have loved it for them to go down that route.

I definitely think Sasha's (Alison's actress) weight gain effected her character. Hollywood is always fat phobic. Fat or plus sized women are always portrayed as weak or good. It's also obvious in her fashion choices, the old Ali would never wear those clothes.

Can’t agree more 💯 even though sasha couldn’t wear the same clothes as she did before she can wear way better clothes then the ones she wore in the show:( sasha could pull so many different fits regardless of her weight. Hollywood just cant see that. It upsets me alot its not just her fashion sence that changed its her character overall she changed into a survivor and a strong women to a weak and vulnerable person alison had so much more potential it’s upsets me to this day that it was just thrown off like that.

I haven't had a chance to watch this video yet because I'm at work, but I'm curious why you think Alison would have made a cohesive end villain. I understand why she would be better than Alex Drake, but I can't think of a motive for Alison to be "A." She was already bullying and blackmailing everyone in town, including her friends, and there was nothing "A" could gain access to by remaining anonymous that Alison couldn't just get. She had just as much if not more power when she was visible.

@@sunnycastiglioni7512 if you ever read the books that the show is based on you would know that alison was the big bad A in the book series and she was a sociopath who worked far more better as a villain you could see it in the early seasons of the show they definitely should had kept her like that and sticked to the books when it came to her because of Marlene king decision to change alison entirely she basically ruined her character a big mistake that didn't work and because of it the show suffered in the last three seasons like any show or movie without a great villain your basically setting yourself up for failure 🤔🤯😬😠😡🤬

I think in this case it made sense. Enemies to lover trope is very common. I liked this couple. I didn't like the impregnating Allison with Emily's baby. But, they made it consistent that Allison had a soft spot for Emily. I mean "practice kissing". I think that people don't understand how far LGBT characters and their depictions have come in the past decade. As someone in their mid-30's. It's easy to look back and critique things. I mean when this show premiered LGBTQ marriage wasn't even recognized federally. I think Allison could have had a redemption arc but, it needed to be better. Everyone loves a good redemption story. They didn't have to make her so weak, she could have remained sassy.

She should have died in 5X11 after reconnecting with Nadia and be with her family in the afterlife because, unlike Alison, Kat is not born evil she became a backstabing heartless bitch, because, she lost her baby, Klaus killed her entire family and chased her for 500 years. The Elena body hijacking and worst of all the "Queen of hell" destroyed her entire character.

Even if she didn’t have a medical condition that caused weight gain she would have gained weight and her body would have just changed I remember going through puberty at 9 and by 10 I had hips, a B cup, and stretch marks and no one my age in my school did and I felt so insecure and was so confused why my clothes didn’t fit anymore She looks curvy so no matter the weight loss she would never be stick thin cause she has HIPS and be bone structure is never going to look like Aria for example or Ashley... it’s more like Hannah Hannah was NEVER fat but people always would point her out as the bigger of the core group when she was just curviest

I agree with you! Alison became the carbon copy of Emily. Making her be one of the liars which means she was also tortured and manipulated from Season 5-7 was a BIG mistake. Imagine if they used Sasha’s weight gain as a way to literally make Alison a bigger presence. She became so curvy and grew into herself so well that she literally could’ve been a seductive goddess! Keeping all the same traits as she was in the earlier flashbacks but this time she becomes a beautiful socialite that still manipulates people into thinking she’s likeable so when they girls come back after the time jump they begin to unravel the real her to all the new people around her. The redemption arc was truly the worst piece of writing I’ve seen in years and realistically she should’ve been the biggest A of them all. Her character was done the WORST on this show man, a disappointing and honestly misguided writers room

yes i absolutely agree with that! especially having mona in the dollhouse, forced into act and dress as alison would have make more sense as well as in alison showing her that it is torture to be alison or giving mona what she "wanted" after ali took the game. but btw about ali's parents: i think because of constantly having to watch charles and also jason when ali was born, she probably lejectled parents attention and her mom even forces alison into lying about simple things and stuff because of charlotte (season 5, christmas episode, flashback). so alison started lying and imagine things or even manipulate in her early life, because that's how she's been taught. she adored to have all the attention drawn to herself, lies like it's a habit, etc. etc. and honestly, i can relate to alison the most. i think she has a histrionical personality disorder. i was diagnosed with it and since then i rewatched the show because i thought of alison instantly.

I agree. She was a literal prepubescent child in the first season. The fact people didn’t expect her to grow into a woman was just so disgusting to me. I noticed the weight gain only in her face and even still that and the rest of her body to me just screamed “child who grew into a woman” like wtf. It never dawned on me much. She was still as stunning as ever to me, We literally watched her go from a preteen to a fully grown adult on screen in front of our eyes. @@MiniMeagsI think it’s because the main leads are all so skinny and always were. Emily was maybe the “biggest” of the bunch and she’s still thin! Honestly it’s hard to say who is “biggest” they’re all small and Lucy hale is just petite in general which adds to it. Sasha growing to be even average weight for her height would’ve pushed her into “fat” territory for Hollywood. An average person next to 4 tiny thin people is always going to look larger than they really are just in reference to the others. I think that’s the whole thing behind the “designated fat friend” they’re meant to make the thin girls appear thinner.

That’s pretty similar to how the books end, not 100% but pretty close. I would recommend reading them if you have time, because there are SO MANY, but they’re also drastically different and somehow even crazier than the show. 😂

"All roads go back to Alison" that actually resonates with me so much. That's exactly how I saw the show in the first three seasons, Ali was definetely my favorite chatacter back then for how present she was despite being "dead". Even though she was missing/"dead" for years, Ali was never gone and that was the best part of her character. Her influence remained and everything was still revolving around her. To this day, that botched redemption arc of hers frustrates me to no end. It's been said many times before but i'll say it again: not everyone needs redemption!

I will never understand why fans shipped Emison after everything Alison did to Emily: manipulating her, making her feel bad about herself, ashamed of her sexuality... My perspective on Ali was that we only saw her through the girls eyes... They assumes she was this powerful confident person, but it was all fake...and when she came back that fake confidence was very obvious to everyone, especially the viewer, as we watched the liars ACTUALLY become confident capable women.. Ali never had the chance for growth in a meaningful way ...so next to the other girls who had A forcing them to do things they didn't want to, having to escape crazy situations in, building their bond between each other, and literally still going to highschool (d plot at best) they still grew... Ali was forced to rely on her small view of the world till she was allowed to come back after all her dirt had been brought up.

I totally agree! It seemed to me like Ali was under the shadow of the character she herself had created. She was nothing but a well construced fictional character who truly, deeply believed the others were too. However, we get to see the others grow out of it and go beyond that. And yes, Ali did some horrifyingly messed up stuff but she also went through horrifyingly messed up stuff, to me it all seems rather proportionate (I do not condone her actions but understand why the character she had created seemed so omnipotent and grand). Overall, Ali's story is very sad as she is great as a highschool mean girl and a villain, but once her friends graduate and shit, there's nothing there but pain, trauma and regret.

Another thing that is really frustrating about the mistreatment of Alison on the writers' part is that Sasha is such a good actress and clearly had a lot of fun with this role and was good at portraying this character. She was able to capture all these different sides of Alison, her manipulative nature as well as those rare moments of vulnerability and doubt. The fact that all this potential was wasted in later seasons is such a disservice to Sasha as an actress.

Bethany had escaped from Radley and was wearing the same clothes as Allison because Jessica often bought the same clothes for Charlotte and Alli, and Bethany must have taken them from Charlotte. Alli was walking up to her house and Charlotte hit her with a rock, thinking she was Bethany. Alli was still alive but couldn't speak, and her mom buried her alive thinking she was dead, because she wanted to protect Charlotte. Grunwald removed Allie from the grave. Later, Bethany was hit by Spencer who thought it was Allie, and Melissa buried Bethany.

I kind of agree but I kind of don’t…I agree with it because obviously the show would’ve been to find her killer, they could’ve found the killer by Season 3…..but I don’t agree with it because since they took the path of Ali faking her death, and running away…..her coming back a much more mature person in a way kind of works because it shows that someone can be so hurtful when they’re younger (since they’re a teenager, basically a kid who depending on how they grew up, they’re not gonna be the most mature) but then once they find themselves, go through some tough shit, and actually learn some respect and morals, they can become a better person….I think that’s the route that the writers chose, because they didn’t wanna have the same old story line of the mean girl goes missing, comes back, but is still mean…….they wanted to change that.

I didn't even realize Sasha Pieterse had reached "plus size" weight during the course of the show, if I'm honest. It wasn't until a while after the finale premiered that I saw an article where she discussed it, bizarre that a fan base who sympathized with Hannah's eating disorder struggles was so ready to make rude comments about Sasha. I just honestly thought she was growing up, filling out. I'm not ashamed to admit I found her extremely attractive in the end seasons and I was genuinely confused as to why they weren't highlighting her beauty. Fashion isn't much of a hobby for me, usually all I really see is "ah, yes, the clothes here are made of clothes," but even I noticed her wardrobe was way different. Sasha has mad talent for acting and I hope she'll continue to be recognized for that. I had never considered that maybe her weight gain had something to do with the writing she was given. I never considered her fat, I just thought she looked mature and full-figured, but even if she was- let fat girls be confident! Let fat girls be pretty! They have all that fashion talent on set and not one of them could think of any better looks for her. I have PCOS too. You shouldn't have to give people your medical history to just be treated like a person. Did we learn nothing from this story? I think what Alison's character suffered from the most was, as you said, the writers had no idea what to do with her. I feel like they didn't really have a solid idea of what motivated her. I'm not completely against the redemption arc, if they had done it well it might have been enjoyable, but in order to redeem her, they needed to explain her, and in order to explain her, they needed to understand her. I had so many thoughts- I remember thinking that she actually hated herself on a deep psychological level and that was why she was always lying about who she was and things she'd experienced and making up different aliases and personas. Alison DiLaurentis was the mystery at the core of the mystery and she was never answered, and it leaves a huge hole in the story.

If they absolutely wanted someone to change, they could have changed the girls instead of Alison. It would have been so much better if Alison came back, the girls start following her again out of habit, but they slowly come to realize how manipulative she is and how little she values them and they learn to stand up for themselves and leave Ali in the dust because they got enough of being pushed around. That would have made them a lot more interesting and could be used as a device to bring some changes in Ali's character. We could have seen how Ali is when she doesn't have a posse following her around and defending her all the time and, after all she's done, she could have been socially ostracized. I would have loved to see how she copes with everyone hating her and whether she would have become more vicious or she would have ended up broken by her lack of power over everyone.

I'm so glad you mentioned how they didn't even make her an anti-hero, because that's exactly what I wanted!! No shade on anyone who wanted her as the final A, but I always believed her character was such that both her good and bad qualities came from the same place in her personality. Protective and possessive, manipulative but sometimes for good reasons, and simultaneously a larger than life villain and a scared kid trying to survive. She's an Odysseus figure in my mind. For people who love literary references so much, the writers missed the chance to make the best reference of all time by not showing us more of Alison's exile and drawing parallels with the Odyssey. Such a missed opportunity! Edit: that last reader comment also basically summarizes all my thoughts and feelings about Alison.

Alison should’ve come back and played the victim and pretended to have a redemption arc, but with Mona always being suspicious. Emison still could’ve happened, but would’ve been more angsty and toxic in that Emily is kind of Alison’s one and only soft spot and Achilles heel, but Alison is still a horrible person, like when the redemption was over and the liars slowly realize that Alison is still manipulating them, then the liars could’ve tried to use Emily against Alison to get her to reveal things about A. And then in the end, we can find out that Alison was AD all along. They can still use misdirects so that some people are still second guessing whether Alison is AD or not

They literally had a hit show with a freaking bow on it if they had just followed the books. Alison was supposed to be the root of everything. All plot points led back to her somehow. Watching Sasha trying to explain her new character is like second hand frustrating because you can tell she was not happy with it either. They could have at least tried to make it convincing and had her still be this clever leader and have her along with Spencer be the ones who deciphers As moves. But they acted as if becoming “a good person” means you are now meek and weak and lose all sense of deduction and critical thinking. If they had made it so that she was A at the beginning and she had set all this up but in the end felt bad about everything and like had some sort of epiphany. I’d even be willing to go along with the character just growing up. And then have her redemption be about taking down A herself. Would have been so much better to understand why the girls would take her back in if she wanted to stop A and would even explain why Emily would fall in love with her. They could have done anything! Absolutely anything else but they chose the worst possible option and made her this annoying little side plot you have to put up with that is not even a shadow of the person they had established she was. I really really just wish that they had more or less followed the book, with alterations here and there, but the book made sense and the reveals and betrayals and other events all made sense. I also still enjoyed it although I can’t rewatch it thanks to Ezria 😒. As much as I hated Alisons redemption I hated the glorified pedophilia so much more.

I wanted a redemption arc for Alison, but my vision for redemption wasn't her being overtly nice. To me Alison should've been a character who didn't bully undeserving characters, she could've been a better person, but not necessarily a nice person. There's definitely a backstory about Alison that the writers didn't go into. If they changed the character so Emison could happen, it was so unnecessary. The entire point of emison is that Emily saw past Alison's facade, that there was a real person with feelings and emotions, and that Alison didn't have to pretend around Emily. How that foundation turned into a forced insemination that developed into a relationship, is beyond me?

I actually think it could’ve been really cool if the show did a sort of reverse from the books where they really did know the real alison originally but the “alison” that came back in season three was really courtney and that would explain the personality change from the original manipulative ali to the more docile victimized ali. It could’ve been revealed in season seven that “alison” was really courtney and you could have seen the girls (especially emily) reacting to the fact that the girl they knew when they were fifteen wasn’t the same girl that they know now. It would’ve also been a cool nod to the books while still doing something different and original

What I would've done with Alison starts off in season 4. The girls head to New York but they are unsuccessful in finding Alison. Shauna still tries to kill the girls but Aria knocks the gun from Shauna's hand. To show that maybe Aria still has that dark side Alison instilled in her, she doesn't grab Shauna to pull her back up now that she's no longer a threat, and maybe Emily grabs her instead. One of the girls calls the cops so Shauna is just arrested and they head back to Rosewood disheartened at their lack of answers. Season 5 begins with Mona going up to the girls and trying to tell them something important but the girls don't really listen. Like they hear her but they just aren't processing the words. They enter the school building and come across this large crowd and hear things like "was it scary?" "were you nervous about coming back?" etc. The crowd departs when one of the girls asks what's going on, and in the centre of the group is Alison, perfectly safe, and as glamourous as always. That is what Mona was trying to tell them. That Alison returned while they were gone and didn't tell them. You could still keep Alison as A, but I would make the dollhouse arc half a season rather than a full one.

But like, realistically we don't need a villain hiding in plain sight who's kind of redeemed but kind of still morally ambiguous and plotting shit behind the scenes. Because Mona inhabited that space pretty well.

It would have been cool if the writers kept Alison a stronger character in the later seasons, despite her weight gain, as the popular 'mean girl' is always portrayed as skinny and perfect, and having her strong would have broke the stereotype. I think it also would have been interesting if they showed some of the liars flashbacks of Alison through Alison's perspective (but in a way where it wouldn't be confusing for the audience). I think they also only made Ali a teacher as they wanted her and Emily to have more scenes (but of course there were other ways they could have gone about this). It also didn't make sense as she missed so much schooling due to her being on the run for 2 years, so realistically she should have have to maybe repeat some schooling. Also her trauma from everything that happened to her could have affected how she did in school but it was just a big problem with the whole show as they barely addressed anyone's trauma or they never portrayed it in a realistic enough way.

It was also a missed opportunity for them to raise awareness on such issues, and had the characters deal with their issues in the correct way (eg Hannah getting help for eating, maybe learning to love herself later on). Such a missed opportunity.

I feel like the writers owe Sasha Pieterse an apology. They really messed up; not only her looks on the show but Alison's storyline. Sasha was and is a beautiful woman. To me it seems like they changed her Story in the last minute, because of her weight gain. They really did her dirty. As always an amazing video, love ❤️

I still wanna know what she was doing for those two years how did she have money? She was 14/15 and supposedly lived in a small-ish town. She didn't move far away and two years isn't long enough for her to be forgotten about by local police. (I get that the police were idiots but still) wouldn't she have had to move far away for a time? Or had a better disguise in order to live her daily life? Also her graduating on time with the rest of the girls wouldn't have made sense, unless she got her GED while in hiding or did school online or something. The logistics of this girls life make zero sense! In the book her mom was helping her and I think they had a house several towns over or something.

When they brought her back it was weird, because her personality totally changed to the point where it felt like maybe the reason she couldn’t just tell them what happened was because she had severe memory loss and forgot who she was

Actually given how different Alison is when she ‘returns’ from the dead, it actually would’ve made more sense for her to actually be a different person. I don’t know how the books work, but if the twin was just there from the second that Alison returns from the dead that would’ve worked. And the twist is just, no, one of the many people who had reason to want Alison dead really did kill her.

Can’t agree more 💯 even though sasha couldn’t wear the same clothes as she did before she can wear way better clothes then the ones she wore in the show:( sasha could pull so many different fits regardless of her weight. Hollywood just cant see that. It upsets me alot its not just her fashion sence that changed its her character overall she changed into a survivor and a strong women to a weak and vulnerable person alison had so much more potential it’s upsets me to this day that it was just thrown off like that.

clarification: alison couldn't replace courtney labor day weekend because her parents still thought she was courtney. plus it wasn't confirmed that "alison"(actually courtney) died until a year later when maya's family dug up the gazebo the liars don't find out alison isn't courtney (their alison) until the second arc's finale.

exactly! the show had so much potential in the final “A” ending. It could have done a totally flashback double sided of arias and alisons storyline of them being the final “A”. How when aria came back from iceland that’s when the texts started and they just used mona as a scapegoat. Like some stuff was mona but some “A” threats really was aria or alison. Or how “A” also was one step ahead since aria would update alison or was just always with the girls. It would’ve made the show be iconic with the twist ending and the pieces being put together.

The early seasons did such a good job of making her this manipuative bitch but also showing her emotional side where she showed her humanity like when she was upset and went to Spencer's because something happened with Jason's friends or when she worried she might be pregnant or when she has a bloody lip and crying to Mrs Hastings. I watched those scenes and felt bad for her even though she was a horrible person but later when the writers were during the poor Ali phases, I didn't feel anything because she lost all her edge and she was just a victim and boring character. I agree she should've been A, those emotional flashbacks could've still been real but just added to the layers of Alison! Sasha was amazing at Alison and there was no reason to change the character to be so dull, she would've killed it being A

I wish she didn't have a "redemption" arc. I wish they it was her being dethrowned, and hallow on purpose. Because there's a lot of mean girls that do become meeker as they get older... BECAUSE they got traumatized by someone that wanted revenge. I'd say getting buried alive by her mother would be traumatizing enough for change, but her softness and full on redemption is too much. It should of just been "pathetic", and a change she clearly DIDN'T want.
