This is my complete series review of 'YOU' as a chilling remake on the traditional Hollywood rom com, and my analysis of Joe Goldberg's psychology and motivations. The media, fairy-tales and Hollywood deluded us into thinking that love conquers all, and it could even save someone like Joe Goldberg.

Love being named Love was such an underrated detail. Forty-Love is a tennis term, it means 40-0 They named their son something stupid yeah, but their daughter "zero"

I liked her being named love cause it’s what Joe was looking for in his delusions: the perfect person, someone who loves him back the way he wants to be loved. But what he wants isn’t real. Because he’s crazy.

My favorite realization is that Joe somehow always ends up surrounding by self-absorbed snobby people that he doesnt usually like (even his love interests) because he IS a self-absorbed snobby person. He may not be rich but he thinks he's more poetic and cultured yhan everyone else. He sticks around these groups because it helps him feel superior

This is a very true observation. A lot of these kind of people (not meaning serial killers but generally people who feel so entitled about everything) tend to prefer sticking with people that they both look somewhat good with while also being able to look down on them. spoiler warning Joe couldn't have standed the real Rhys Montrose tbh, cause the real Rhys wouldn't have given him any justification to look down on him. So it makes sense that out of all the people he could have created a twisted version of in his mind he would pick him.

Love is definitely my favourite love interest of Joe's to date. Having her be revealed to be EVEN MORE unhinged than Joe was the perfect way to take her character, and it was darkly hilarious that Joe was disgusted, when he's really no better.

I really loved Beck, she was a very sweet one. I could relate a lot to her people pleasing tendencies but also was invested in her character development of someone being too afraid to stand up to her overbearing friends and family to someone even standing up against Joe. The hate is sooo out of nowhere for me, I don't get it. Everything I've heard is that she's somehow "basic" and "bland" or something and, like, uhm, even if you think that about her, how exactly does this mean she would be a bad person and that she must be hatecrimed against???

I think it's the Umbridge syndrome. If you know Harry Potter, you know fans hate Umbridge more than they hate Voldemort (mass murderer and terrorist) or Bellatrix Lestrange (main evil minion, torturer), because people know more Umbridges (real life evil couched in saccharine coy sweetness, people who are insidious and 'keep the order' in an everyday albeit sinister way) than they know Voldemorts (ideologue mass recruiting followers). I think Beth is the type of regular person who may be annoying to people in real life (not hated, just annoying in small ways) cuz she is a little vapid, thoughtless, self centered, bland - it probably reminds people of real people they know or themselves to be honest, and to see 'that' person (or themselves) be the object of romantic obsession without elevating herself to a 'worthy' object of obsession (something movies in the romance genre does, the main love interests are only 'flawed' in acceptable ways, otherwise their personality is perfect) makes people uncomfortable I think.

Also also also! The fact that Love embodies the most famous (and probably most potential to mine for characterization) trope of a female love interest: the manic pixie dream girl. She checks every box, and takes all these terrifying and tragic dimensions of her, folds them up, and fits them into this smaller box labeled Manic Pixie Dream Girl-just as Joe folds so much of himself into the Bookish Boy Next Door/Nice Guy trope to be the perfect man for someone. Like they're not exactly the same character, but they each uniquely fulfills these specific gendered romcom archetypes in ways that perfectly mirror each other. The wordplay that Joe's "match" that almost killed him is Love itself/herself. Love meaning a "zero score" in tennis telling us that she was raised in a household where love doesn't exist, she is not valued compared to her brother Forty (the maximum score!!).

Karen is Black woman who was just in a relationship with a man who she suspects was capable of hurting Beck at the very least; maybe the writers just forgot about her, but I definitely buy that she saw Beck was dead and decided to keep her mouth shut and disappear for her own safety.

The thing with morally questionable or dangerous or evil characters is that you are allowed to like them or love them as characters, however, you must realise and understand that they're heinous, horrific people who do terrible, despicable things. Not everybody, but some people fail to recognise this and it's very damaging, potentially even harmful.

What i saw from season 3 joe, is a man who was trying to stifle his true inclinations. When he let loose he went haywire. We also get proof that ANY woman will do. Proximity to him means you are in danger of him fixating on you. He doesn't choose them because he finds them interesting. He just invents a reason to say hes falling for them. My belief is that he got to know karen prior to dating her, so he never got to project his own fantasy onto her and thus didnt "like" karen the same way. Season 3 also is true to the monotony of a real stalker and serial killer. They usually have the same behaviors over and over again. Same with love. She just repeats cycles over and over. Also im glad you said that about how the women resembled his mom. I thought i was buggin when i started thinking that.

Also regarding Love’s relationship with Theo I got it at first how she couldn’t stay away from him and wanted to help him like getting him Ubers home etc because it seemed like he reminded her of her brother so it was maybe comforting to look after him like she did with her brother but that made it even creepier when things got romantic between them 😅

I think that’s the point of the storyline. A wolf in sheep’s clothing so to speak. Not only that but he has convinced himself that he is a victim and the things he is doing is somewhat reasonable. He’s twisted the world in his mind so that he is justified which is why it’s written through his POV.

So, Dr. Nicky... listen, Joe's actions are in no way justifiable to frame a therapist for his girlfriend's murder.... BUTT... Dr. Nicky is also a scumbag for forming a relationship with a client while she was emotionally vulnerable. He, at the very least, deserved to lose his license. And that's what I enjoy about "YOU." It really forces you to see the morally-reprehensible (or at the very least, psychologically damaging) actions in everyone involved. And I think that's why I admire the character of Paco's mother's dialogue in the hospital with her comments about how it's very easy to judge people like Joe in a positive or negative light from the sidelines, but when you totally immerse yourself in judging the actions of every character, you find the maladaptive behaviors everywhere. Except Karen and Dante. They win.

BUT Hidden Bodies and the books after are honestly MUCH improved and id even say quite enjoyable. Maybe just skip the first one but try out hidden bodies if you haven't! I think the joe in the books is in some ways worse but in some ways much more enjoyable. I'm saying this as a person who enjoys the show... I feel like a mistake in the writing was to make all other characters around Joe so unlikable. When Joe is played by a likeable actor, is charming, etc, and at the same time we don't like the victims of his crimes? It sets a significant portion of the audience up to side with him like this. It's a lot like the horror movie format when you make a lot of the characters annoying so that the audience won't mind, or will even enjoy, seeing them get killed by the villain. Edit: I also think it was a mistake to not show to the audience when Joe kills Beck. It's like... too easy for the audience to pretend it didn't happen, cus they didn't see it.

One thing I feel like people haven’t noticed is Joe’s comparison to Ernest Hemingway, who is Joe’s favorite author. A lot of Hemingway’s stories are about your stereotypical alpha male doing things and finding what they want in life. Joe can obviously relate to that. Hemingway also had 4 wives in his lifetime, so we can assume that he’s not necessarily well with women he constantly cheated and manipulated his wives. Joe is manipulative, has cheated but LO, IF SOMEONE CHEATS ON HIM!! Hemingway grew up privileged and he was not a great son, either. He fought, drank too much and he was just an all-around asshat. The fact that Joe talks about liking Hemingway like he’s some sort of intellectual says a lot about him.

I really advise anyone who watched the show to read the book bc he was so much worse in the book every time he thought about beck he was masturbating and his comments were way more creepy I loved the show but a lot of the viewers get so blinded by Penn Badgley and don’t even acknowledge that his character is NOT boyfriend material

This channel is my new fav. The host is gorgeous, and I finally have the deep dives on the soap operas I love. The OUAT deep dive was excellent. Fav YOU seasons in order: 1 and 3. 2 lost me at points, but it redeemed itself with the excellent LOVE twist. 4 didn’t work but I’m interested to see how they wrap things up in five.

One of my biggest gripes with the show is they completely left out every detail that showed just how creepy Joe is. The books are terrifying. You can not romantise Joe in the books, it is made blindingly clear he is awful and creepy and should be in jail. They dont sugar coat how evil and twisted he is. There is no justification for his actions. He is the villan and that is clear. Its even scarier because he believes he is good and from descriptions looks like a normal guy. It's scary. The show completely ignores most of that, including a lot of inner dialougue that would make him unlikeable. They seem to think he has to be redeemable or likeable in order for people to watch and it looses all the edge the books had. And thats before they decided to go rougue of the books and do whatever they wanted. I love the show, but reading the books made me realise how much had been left out in favour of making Joe the victim of everything and a man people will fall over themselves to support and love as if he isnt a disgusting person.

i’m sorry I know season 4 was really bad (I watched it so I know) but this isn’t really a deep dive or a “complete series review” if it just doesn’t have season 4’s content and I feel like there were some important things to be covered in the last half of that season

A thought I have about season 1 is that the police likely would not have believed Karen about Joe's possible involvement in Beck's death because she is a black woman. Still, I think the writers missed out on not including Karen at the end of that season.

super off topic but i would loveeeee to see ur opinion and a video on the OC, i’ve just finished a rewatch and wow not only is that show so crazy so there’s so many storyline’s you could talk about, but everything from the fashion, lingo and music is ultimate 2000s vibes, it’s so sad, funny and entertaining and it definitely has its flaws but what show from the 2000s doesn’t and for how culturally relevant it was when it was airing and how crazy some of the storyline’s are i’m surprised that there’s not more videos on it!! , also the theme song is an absolute banger!!

Your cleavage is so distracting 😂😂😂 I mean this with peace and love, you’re beautiful, you’re so much more than your appearance so this is not critical, lol I’m straight but I can’t help but look😅 Love the coverage, this show was so mind boggling to watch, putting it in kind words lol ❤ it’s much more twisted than I originally anticipated. I need to rewatch the series again, it’s been a while. Especially the further seasons. It’s the educated, insightful but insulting at the same time narration, the condescension. It’s wild.

I feel bad for Joe as a kid, I can see why he became how he is. Not that it makes it ok, just his childhood makes it easier to understand why he became who he later is. Had his character gotten therapy at an earlier age he probably would’ve turned out differently but because he didn’t, that’s one of the reasons he turned out to become such a twisted person. In many ways it’s sad.

@Shania234ify

I don’t think it came out of nowhere, I actually think they were setting him up for that since S1. I was recently rewatching it and it has a lot of foreshadow of what’s going on on his mind, i.e.: they show a copy of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in one of the scenes and they zoom it in very closely at some point; he already has hallucinations going on, and there was one time where we kinda listen to someone talking to him, then he turns around and there’s no one there. It was interesting watching S1 having watched S4, S4 has a lot of winks to that specific season.

I am genuinely curious what you'd think of the end of season 4, since the show does take a major twist towards the end, but of course don't make yourself watch it if you're not feeling it. I get that feeling of boredom but I'm glad i stuck with it till the end because it did have some interesting twists

So after having read the books (i havent watched season 4 yet but have watched the others) its like the writers took bits and pieces from the books as they went on. First season is most loyal, but they took the route of humanizing Joe more than the book, adding in a kid for him to help, i think they fleshed out the Joe and Beck relationship a bit more here too, because I read the book afterwards and remember thinking "that's all?" By the time they get to season 3 they are using even less book content so thats why you have more than one love interest and the plot gets more confusing! I was still very confused by the events of the 2nd-4th book and had to look up summaries of them afterwards to make sure I did not miss something. Im guessing the reason why they didnt follow the books as time went was because there are chapters when nothing interesting is happening (i.e. theres no drama, no murders, just going about everyday life) which i found a huge slog to get through in the 4th book.
