Its so refreshing watching your channel. Usually with these type of channels we get the guy with a ninety thousand dollar rig who bounce's it of rocks seemingly without care. Explaining to us how he buys what he needs to be comfortable while he does it. You show us a real person overlanding with a truck you use to go to work and well live. You don't bounce it off rocks or scream full throttle thru mud. You work to hard on it yourself to do that nonsense nor I imagine can you afford to do that anyhow. Four wheel drive for you is a means to end not the story itself its incidental to that. Getting out there enjoying the country is the story and you tell it well. That's why the Forester was such a good overland vehicle and while an upgrade the Nissan is still in that ball park. You keep it real and that is priceless.

I miss trees. I've been living in the high desert near the Idaho/Oregon border for the last 45 years, but every time you put up one of these vids around the Eugene/Springfield area I still get that feeling that something is missing. I was raised in Springfield way back when U of O was considered a conservative university and Weyerhauser was king. I think this year I'm going to make a road trip over to the wet side just to hug a tree and remember what Douglas fir smells like. Thanks for the reminder Donald!

We spent six years in the 90's living in Payette and working in Ontario. We bought and lived in the old Baptist Church in Payette. I liked the work there and the countryside generally, but I longed for the green of Western Oregon. I would head to Portland once a month for business meetings and I was under strict orders not to tell my wife how beautiful it all was. We've been back on the west side for over twenty years now, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Lol loved the magnet problem. I was thinking how, why you wouldn’t want your kitchen set up on a pull out drawer from under your bed. But when you woke up opened your door and looked out to see your table with stove and propane still out and set up was smart. One less thing to pack up before bed and one less thing to get back out and set back up to make breakfast in the morning. Oh and the size of that lamb chop was insane. Surprised you didn’t just take the butcher knife to use as a steak knife while eating it. Very interesting to see your friend who has the same truck and his take on the set up. Guess the rooftop tent makes more sense if traveling as a couple. But the shot with their puppy shows a major flaw. The fact their dog can’t get up and sleep with them. Our dog would be very upset if he was left behind after we climbed up to go to sleep.
@softroadingthewest3 жыл бұрын
Very astute observation on the kitchen pullout thing. I'm actually going to talk about this in next weekend's video, but that was completely unintentional serendipity. This is ALL a temporary rough draft...that table thing was an improvisation because I couldn't make a pullout work with the rest of my improvised temporary setup, but totally accidentally realizing I could leave the stove set up overnight...now I'm rethinking the whole thing!

Don, always enjoy your practicality and cinematic anesthetic. Nice to see you out there! Like what you've done with your set up. I thought the bumper table was interesting when you first set it up. Then I saw you exit the canopy the next morning and I thought: that is genius. Any concerns about wildlife being attracted to the stove overnight? I can imagine that accessing the refrigerator in thr cab is gonna get old...
@softroadingthewest3 жыл бұрын
Well to be honest, the ability to leave the stove set up was purely accidental. The "table" was a really quickly thrown together improvisation to stand in for a future pull-out kitchen and it was just serendipity that it happened to work out that way...and it's now got me rethinking my whole kitchen approach. I'll be covering all this in next weekend's video actually. I'm not too worried about animals. While my stove has generally always been packed away when I sleep, virtually everyone else I have ever camped with over the years leaves their stoves out the whole time they're at camp. Dispersed camping like this, the wildlife is not accustomed to people as it can be in the vicinity of state park campgrounds. If I was camping in Yosemite National Park, you can bet that stove would get packed away for the night. :-) So far the fridge hasn't bothered me. I've just grabbed everything I need for a given meal at once. I originally thought I would incorporate it in the truck bed kitchen but there simply isn't the room. Two unexpected benefits of having the fridge in the cab are that on hot days, it is riding inside the air-conditioned cab, and at night, I can't hear the compressor cycle on and off as I would if it were in the canopy with me. :-)

Do you ever use any of the water from the creeks?
@softroadingthewest3 жыл бұрын
Personally I've only ever used creek water for a refreshing face wash in the morning (just splashing it onto me directly out of the creek) or, when overlanding in summer, I will take every opportunity to immerse myself completely in any creek, river or lake to clean off the past couple days worth of sweat and grime. :-) I wouldn't hesitate to use the creek water though for any situation where I'd be boiling it. There are no concerns about chemical pollution up this high, it's very clean water, but parasites are always possible in most of these streams so I would never drink it directly without some kind of purification, either a filtration system or boiling.

No, actually I didn't put more stuff in it, I put *less* stuff in it. Every single thing in this truck WAS in my Forester, but in the Forester I ALSO carried a tent and a cot. The canopy itself aside, I did not put one single additional item in this (okay, I have an extra Jackery unit in this video, but that is temporary).

Mosquitos/bugs can ruin a good trip. Two years ago I did an early spring camping trip to the northern Sierras. Right after thaw/snow melt. Got eaten alive, every piece of skin not covered by clothing/DEET. The scary thing was I got some kind of reaction/allergy. Bitten on the backs of my hands. They swelled up like balloons. Scary stuff. Mosquitos carry some bad Juju.

See what happens when you get a Frontier wet? They multiply! Please follow the rest of the directions and don't mod them after midnight. 😂
