This youth orchestra delivers with more verve than many professionals! One violinist has a violin that sang like a flute, first I thought was a flute but then heard flute player later. A very talented group!

Though not as popular as the 2nd I think this is Rachmaninov’s best symphony but of course all 3 are master works. Great playing by this very talented young orchestra, they are wonderful 😊

I have an eternal question! Why does Rachmaninoff's music reach into my heart and bring instant tears. What does this melancholy composer have in his nature to write music that "pulls at the heart" so effectively. This symphony is an absolute "well" of beauty and melancholy. The main theme of the 1st movement absolutely "knocks me out." Not fake tears but real tears of melancholy. Rachmaninoff is a timeless composer of authentic emotions that truly involve the "heart" of the person listening. Why is he so proficient at writing themes that involve the "heart and feelings" of the listener? This is an eternal question!

The main theme of the first and second movement are indeed the most beautiful themes Rachmaninoff has composed. To answer your question; he must have a deep emotional understanding of life born of much life experience. His music is simply an expression of this understanding. When we listen to his music, our heart hears it, not our head. That is why we break down. This music bypasses the defenses of our intellect.

This is brilliant playing It is always something special, and an affirmation of life, to see extremely talented young musicians tackle masterpieces of the repertoire. There is all the freshness of youth, and energy and ambition, and delight in pure facility! None of the professional vanity of old and jaded hands. Whenever a great youth orchestra comes to play in London, at the Royal Festival Hall, or the Barbican or Royal Albert Hall, one or more of the sisterhood lady lovers and I, we grab some cheap sets, and let our hearts be ravished. Rachmaninov, with his Russian tendency to "Slavic melodrama, melancholy and damnation", and that quite opposite "psyche-embracing" deliciously-lush, post-romantic harmony (not an ounce of the tedious minimalism of Anton Webern - my goddess I'd rather sit chewing the program notes) seems very suited to an American orchestra. Like Copeland, Barber or Hanson or Korngold. In 1001 years, we must pray that whatever becomes of our human sensuous-comprehension, and our general social relations, and technical powers, we can still say that genius symphonic music played by eager and fresh young souls will seem ... like circles of blessed heaven within our dirty cynical world. This is A VERY RARE case of a gifted/taslented youth symphony orchestra just sounding SUPERB! Of course with R achmaninoff and his exqusite music he wrote any orchestra could make it sound pretty good.

‘Very rare” case? Not in my experience. Recently I heard a performance of Prokofiev’s 6th symphony by the students of the RAM/London which was mind blowing. Similarly Nielsen’s 4th symphony with students of the RCM/London of which I commented to one of the players that they sounded like a World class professional orchestra! I love the way this obviously gifted young conductor keeps the pace moving, so many conductors fall into the trap of overly sentimentalising Rachmaninov’s great music. This guy knows how to conduct Rach.!

Just like t he public reaction to his 1st symphony the public's--and some cri tics---opinion of his 3rd symohony was negative. I r eally don' t know why. It sounds wonderful to me. Poor Rachmaninov was misjudged.
