Really great ensemble playing a great transcription of my favorite Rachmaninoff! It's clear that this conductor has the love and respect of his players, and that he values and respects their wonderful talents!

My biggest flex is it that my mom plays in that amazing orchestra!

I never have seen such an orchestra: the basses are so strong! And of course the group as a whole is so ballanced, bravissimo

Guten Tag, ich wollte Sie fragen, ob es möglich ist, dass Sie vom Landesblasorchester Baden-Württemberg - Live Im Turm auf KZbin posten können. Vielen Dank

Anyone know if this is the Paul Lavender transcription?

Hi Eric, it's the transcription of Douglas McLain through Baton Music ( www.batonmusic.nl/catalogue/symphonic-dances-opus-45-bm684/ ).

@@landesblasorchester Yes, it's a great transcription....I've played it, and it works wonderfully well, as do all of McLain's works. Unfortunately, he has died and is no longer making transcriptions.

What's the point of this group? Why is a wind ensemble (+ two cellos and two basses) trying to replicate a piece meant for orchestra? They should have the local orchestra play this piece and the wind ensemble can stick to wind ensemble pieces.

Is it that it is not for orchestra that it bothers you, or that it is not an arrangement by Rachmaninoff that bothers you? I wonder if you would have the same negative reaction, for instance, to Rachmaninoff's own arrangement of this piece for two pianos, an arrangement which is often performed. The idea of arrangement is not necessarily a bad thing; there are poor arrangements and there are marvelous arrangements. The wind ensemble as a genre is one of the glories of concert music, and there is no reason they need not necessarily perform a work like this, if it is well played and well arranged.

Wind Ensembles are wonderful ensembles that don't have as many pieces composed for them by great composers as orchestras do, and so are always looking for great literature to perform. They then perform this literature with great care and attention to detail, to try to carry out the composer's intentions as well as they can. It's odd that someone would complain about a wind ensemble playing this work which has SO MUCH GREAT WIND WRITING in it, including the rare use of the beautiful alto saxophone.
