As much as I love Sergio's work, when it came to cartooning, Gary Larson was mine. I even managed to get a number of panels in a now defunct regional newspaper called "Northwest Comic News" here in Oregon.

Short but great interview, thank you. Sergio Aragones is a legend. Groo was the first comic book I bought regularly, many years ago. Picked up the Groo vs. Conan graphic novel recently and it is very funny. The detail in Aragones' work is still amazing.

Sergio's work is not only brilliantly hilarious, but also inspirational. Groo is such an amazing character and so specific his comics became a secret shorthand between us and our lead actor (who also is a huge Groo fan) for our own live action comic series here on youtube. If we could channel only a fraction of the silliness his work embodies then we would consider our work a success. His work is so elegant in its simplicity! Thanks for posting.

He never ceases to amaze, but you have to keep your eyes peeled for more than 5 seconds... I might have thought, "This looks quickly drawn and the feel are but an afterthought", but besides all the ornately detailed scenes from time to time, you have historical accuracy exploding almost unexpectedly in like crazy. The research and knowledge about structures and accessories and fasteners is remarkable. One comic really runs the gamut of almost a fusion of styles, yet all distinctly Sergio!

I so love the Groo comics. I remember when I picked up an early issue, the one where he is shanghaied and first meet captain Ahax. I was reading it on the buss ride home laughed so much that I got problems breathing. A rather old passenger ended up asking what was so funny, so I let him read it and if I had not grabbed him, he would have fallen out of the seat laughing. The comic shop told soon after about an old man who had walked in and bought a copy of every issue they had of Groo.

True! When I was in high school, Stan Lee gave some characters I had drawn to Sergio and used them in Groo the Wanderer #1. Stan Lee called me and I missed the call. The printed finished comic was delivered to me weeks after. Weirder: I didn't know of this until I was sitting (sleeping) in class and someone dropped the comic off at my school to the main office and it was plopped in front of me in class and my characters were in the story. This was before the Marvel empire as we know it now. I was a dumb kid who totally mishandled the situation and lost an opportunity.

Cool story! My cool Stan Lee story goes back about 12 years. I had a complete run of Amazing Spider-Man from 1963 to that present time. I found a personal email of his and sent him a note asking if he would autograph my issue #1 if I fed-ex'd to him. I had it back in two weeks. Pretty darn cool.

Groo was awesome. Even the letters page was awesome. Writer Mark Evanier used to make wisecracks about how Sergio can't speak a lick of English. It was funny as hell. His artwork is so insanely detailed and the crowd scenes will blow your mind.
