They say Leone was in the beginning stages of working on an epic about Stalingrad before he suddenly passed away. Can only dream what the maestro would have done with the story of an epic WW2 battle.

@@romagrafici1118 Thanks for the clarification. I'll assume an Italian knows the details better than I do, as I am only recalling what I read many years ago, and certainly could have gotten the two mixed up. Personally, I'd even watch a Leone movie about toothpaste coming out of a tube (as long as Ennio scored it too).

I had read about it and Giuseppe Tornatore wanted to pursue the project. I could of actually imagined it happening seeing how I love Tornatore's films and cinematic approach to his films. However with Maestro Ennio Morricone gone ..who would of scored the film. That remains the question.

7. The Colossus of Rhodes 6. A Fistful of Dollars 5. For a Few Dollars More 4. Once Upon a Time in the West 3. Duck, You Sucker! 2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 1. Once Upon a Time in America. Duck You Sucker #1. I’ve always loved the longest version without knowing anyone else rated it - then Glenn Erickson’s and Sir Christopher Frayling’s knowledge and erudition later helped me see how this is, despite the comedy, Leone’s first ‘serious’ film and brutally effective in communicating his personal politics. And then, once you entertain the fullest potential meaning of the flashbacks, the film becomes something else entirely. A John Ford level masterpiece.

It's interesting seeing Leone's Westerns elevated to "classic" status. When they were released they were dismissed, ignored, or ridiculed by critics. (I'm old-- I read the reviews). My favorite Leone movie: For a Few Dollars More. Incidentally, the three "Dollars" movies plus Eastwood's wretched Hang'Em High were once released in a quadruple feature to drive-ins. It made for a long, long evening. I know. I sat in the car.

I saw ALL these in the theater on first release (except waited for non-linear version of Once/America), and I agree with your order. For a Few Dollars More usually gets "forgotten", but way better film than Fistful of Dollars (but likely less important in film history). GBU is also my favorite, and don't forget its anti-war theme running throughout. Not only do I have these films and their music soundtracks, I have been to the remains of the arch from the flashback of Once Upon a Time in the West.

A lot of people told me that:) for a while I thought the same, but the truth is I was lying to myself. Once Upon a Time might be the more "quality" film, but Good Bad Ugly is just too much fun and kickass for me to put it any lower than 1st.

My first serious western (not counting some Bud Spencer/Terence Hill comedies and Winnetou films) was Once Upon A Time In The West, so it will always be my favourite western (and almost my favourite movie, only rivalled by Seven Samurai). I really need to rewatch Once Upon A Time In America. I've seen it twice on tv but both times with a dub and the Hungarian dub made the bizarre decision to have Al Pacino's usual voice actor be Noodles. It feels so WRONG. (Oddly enough, the same actor also used to be Sir David Attenborough's Hungarian voiceover, but he sounded prety diffferent there.)

My favorite is Once Upon A Time In The West. I think The Good The Bad And The Ugly has too much unnecessary story involving the civil war. Once Upon...America is great, but for some reason I was not truly interested in the story. Fun fact: Tonino Delli Colli's cinematography was so unique at the time, because the cheaper Techniscope format was used. It's 35mm, but only two perfs high. That allows for spherical lenses (a wider choice and easier to work with than anamorphic) and a deeper depth-of-field than 35mm. That's how you get these awesome shots where faces in the foreground and the landscape are all in focus.

For a Few Dollars More just fit my personal taste way more. It's really fast paced, it's tight, punchy, constantly engaging. Once Upon A Time In America is a masterpiece, as I've said. I just think it has a few moments where it drags, it's a bit too slow, it could've been shorter, and it's more of a chore to sit through than Few Dollars More.

I could propose to put ure nr 2 on nr 1. U have to admit the following, the characters in The Good..Ugly are more 'flat' then the charachters in 'Once..West.' Clint Eastwood for example, is brilliant in his role, but his role is more one sided, he is only nonchalant, cool but focused. He has no past and no future. Tuco, and I love Tuco, is a crook with a heart, but the psychological profile(or acting talent?) isnt as deep as Cheyenne's. Both movies have this 'triangular relationships' between protagonist -friend of protagonist - antagonist. The Good...Ugly for the story itself, is also more one coincidence after the other u could say, It is faster, but less realistic and 'mature'. In Once..West Mr Harmonica is there to end something, the beautifull and one of the main characters, Claudia, who also bears a secret, wants to start up something. It is a multi layered story and has a gorgeous woman in it. The sound track also has more 'different emotions' then the soundtrack on Good...Ugly. If u would have put Clint in Once...West, it wouldnt have worked. This slowness u mention, for me it creates a tension, makes it more dramatic, give room to detail like a cricket caught in a barrel, the sound of the blowing of the wind, I think Once..West is arguably the better movie. It is my fav movie of all times and the soundtrack is a part of it. How the characters all have a different tune, wich emphasize their characters. It has drama, action and mysticism/mr. harmonica and transformation if times. But dont get me wrong, i love all these movies as well. Peace!

I aM D.B.Great review. Of course thumbs way up! I haven't and won't watch Colossus based on what you've said. I disagree with some of your selections but only my opinions of course. Once Upon a Time in America is very 'uneven,' imo and that's not because of its extreme run-time. It just is. The music is not better than other Morricone scores. I didn't find the characters endearing; indeed the girl who said to the young Noodles he was nothing but a hood - is right. And remained one, LOL. Duck you Sucker I've not finished but was enjoying. The music is not better than A Fistful, strongly disagree. Regardless; I love me some Morricone. I also disagree about the characters in Fistful, yes they're rather thinly drawn - doubtless. . Yet to this day, Leone lovers remember 'stupid' Esteban by name, his brother's anger at his limitations "Esteban, my brother is it possible you have no ideas of your own?" The Baxter family. Etc., etc. They don't have a lot of depth but the characters are intensely memorable. Give me Silvanito over Noodles any day of the week; twice on Sundays. And...I can't wait to watch the rest of your review. Understand it's because we Leone fans are so passionate about the man's work that obviously, my strong opinions are just that, opinions. You've done a fine job!
