After a plane crash leaves the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 stranded on a seemingly uninhabited island, Jack Shepard, a doctor, takes on the role of leader. The group faces threats from mysterious entities, including polar bears, the "Smoke Monster," and hostile inhabitants known as "The Others." They meet Danielle Rousseau, a French woman who has been stranded for 16 years and is searching for her child, Alex. The survivors discover hidden structures, and while Locke and Boone attempt to open one, Michael, Jin, Walt, and Sawyer build a raft to escape. Flashbacks reveal the survivors' lives before the crash.
