Cool. I don't have one, but it looks like the control knobs are pretty awesome. I'll be getting a couple more strobes next week, but they'll have TTL and HSS. I will use the HSS for sure.

Awesome video and amazing instruction! Could you please provide a link or name of the reflector holder and stand you used in this video?
@wayneJohnsPhotographer6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I've just seen this message, as i don't get notifications from this account. :) The reflector used here is a California Sunbounce, a collapsable version in a rectangular frame. the stand is just a short lighting stand with a 'Manfrotto super clamp" attached to the top to clamp the frame of the reflector. :) Hope that helps.

Hi, Sorry for the late reply on this, I don't get notifications from this account. This tutorial was a few years ago now but it was shot on the Fuji XT 1 with the 56mm f1.2 lens. :)

How far under is the fill light? 1stop?
@wayneJohnsPhotographer8 жыл бұрын
+Jared Taylor +Jared Taylor Hi Jared, Thanks for the question. It really depends on the amount of fill light you want to add to your shot, and also if your softbox is pointed direct at your model or feathered away slightly (for a slightly softer fill light); in this particular tutorial the fill light was around 1 to 1 1/2 stops under the main.

May I ask why you keep the studio so dark? Is it just for the video effect of looking cooler. I am just saying as I have had a number of new photographers recently speaking to me that are under the impression their studio should be dark as some guys un used basement.. Which is ridiculous as most of us have studio light up like day light even when taking low key photos...
@Smokin07ram8 жыл бұрын
+Joe's Photo & Video Channel Yeah probably to make the video look cool and to keep your attention on the subject. The back of my studio is south facing and has an 8 foot tall by 16 foot wide set of windows and glass doors in the back. You are right of course, I can easily shoot without blinds on the brightest day. When you start shooting tiny little products with fill cards the size a match covers you are probably shooting at lower powers that could incur color contamination. My client may also want a few narrow DOF images in their portrait package...So I will be at f/2.8 or so with the 85 f/1.4 Zeiss Otus...It produces amazing looks there...as do quite a few other lenses. So I need the blind for that. Same when I am trying a new light setup...way easier to see with the blinds closed. Not all images take place at f 8-11 these days! Just my thoughts!

Smokin07ram You have very valid reasons and I completely concur with you. As far as the dark set lighting the video, I also agree with you. Its likely just for show.
@wayneJohnsPhotographer8 жыл бұрын
+Joe's Photo & Video Channel Hi Joe, Thanks for your question, and a very valid point. I can also add that the ambient light in studio remained darkened and controlled on film for one main reason in this particular tutorial; and that was to allow viewers to see effect of light spread/direction and fall off from the modelling bulbs of the Flash heads and also the light reflecting back into the model using different types of reflectors. Of course the modelling bulbs help give an indication of how your flash will light your model. If the normal ceiling lights were turned on in the studio then you probably wouldn't see the modelling bulbs effect on the film. :) Of course it adds a little bit a drama to the film too. lol. :) Its for no other reason, as rightly pointed out this effect can easily still be achieved with flash in a well lit studio flooded by natural daylight.

+Joe's Photo & Video Channel Hi Joe, it's so that we can see each lights effect on the model through the video camera - if it was just the flash it would overpower the ambient light, but this isn't the case for video. Hope this helps!
@JoeJacksonJr8 жыл бұрын
wayne Johns_Photographer Would be nice if this was pointed out in the videos. Like I mentioned, there are so many new to photography that think they have to have their studios so dark. Those of us like myself who have been shooting for years know thats not the case. It just IMHO sends a bad message. Although I fully get the tutorial aspect. Myself personally I would just show a photo of the shot in the video. This is what I have been doing anyway. That said, I also prefer to have my studio or any shooting area well lit, that way it creates an atmosphere that is more comforting to the model. Plus the safety aspect of being able to see any possible trip hazards.
